Chapter 649: Resignation with peace of mind
The day after Qiao Feng flew back to Hong Kong, he received a call from Jin Yong.
"Mr. Joe is amazing." As soon as Qiao Feng entered the door, Jin Yong said with admiration.
It is no wonder that Jin Yong admires Jin Yong, since the Hillsborough tragedy, because of the first attention to the report, the criticism of the South Yorkshire Police Department and the British authorities, and even No. 10 Downing Street, as well as the subsequent in-depth investigation and excavation of the truth, Ming Pao's sales in Hong Kong can be said to have reached a significant level. In the past, the average daily sales of Ming Pao were about 180,000 copies, but since this period of time, there has basically been no less than 230,000 copies, and many days have even exceeded 300,000 copies.
Although Hong Kong is not a big place, but the football culture is very deep, which may have something to do with the fact that it is a British colony.
Coupled with the fact that the so-called truth of the matter has turned again and again, Hong Kong citizens are very eager to know what the truth is, so they continue to pay attention to it, and then the sales of Ming Pao, which was first reported, naturally increased greatly.
"Where, Mr. Cha has an overreputation, but it just happened to be the right time, to be honest, I didn't expect it to cause such a big sensation and effect." Qiao Feng waved his hand again and again and said modestly.
"Mr. Qiao is too modest, he can find and weigh the importance of the news as soon as it appears, and then seize the opportunity to follow up on the report in time, this is the most important ability to do news, Mr. Qiao has this ability, and he does it very well." Jin Yong made no secret of his appreciation: "It reminds me of myself when I first started Ming Pao."
After leaving Ta Kung Pao that year, Jin Yong founded Ming Pao in 1959, and at that time, the distribution of Ming Pao relied on Jin Yong's publication of martial arts in the newspaper to drive sales.
It is completely a citizen tabloid, in addition to martial arts, there are also horse classics, film and television reports, etc., which can be said to be an out-and-out entertainment tabloid, which is basically read by ordinary citizens, and the elite class basically does not read it, not to mention that it is the most important newspaper in the Chinese world like now.
Objectivity and faithfulness are the labels of Ming Pao, which have not only attracted the attention of the British authorities in Hong Kong, but also the mainland and Taiwan.
The reason why Ming Pao has changed from a small tabloid to a high-pressure newspaper that has attracted a lot of attention from politics, business, and home and abroad is because Jin Yong can seize the opportunity and dare to seize the opportunity.
On June 6, 1959, Ming Pao editorial: "The five words 'supporting' justice and kindness' can be said to be our position".
Jin Yong directly distinguishes the positioning of Ming Pao from the citizen tabloids, and Ming Pao does not take the road of entertaining the public, but takes the road of seriousness, objectivity, and faithfulness to the facts.
On October 16 of the same year, the editorial said: "This newspaper claims to be absolutely neutral and neither left nor right,...... The only one who is truly neutral is Ming Pao." February 21, 1960 editorial: "We are not communists, nor are we anti-communists,...... We hope that all Chinese people can enjoy true democracy and freedom, and that the people truly have the right to choose their own government and elect government workers. The second anniversary editorial once again stated: "Our goals are as follows: 1. Strictly abide by the position of impartiality, neither left nor right, and support the interests of Chinese and Hong Kong people." ...... I think that China is a country that is more important than the Communist Party or the people, and more worthy of our love than the United States or the Soviet Union. ...... 5. Although Ming Pao is a tabloid, it is broad and tolerant, and is not afraid or rejects opinions from any side. ”
The real rise of Ming Pao came in May 1962.
It was during that "three-year natural **" period, when natural disasters did not exist, that a large number of people fled to Hong Kong, culminating in May, with tens of thousands of people pouring in every day. On the 8th, Jin Yong decided to ask Ming Pao to break the position of not reporting illegal entry and began to report on the incident on a large scale.
The headline on the front page of that day was: The grandmother and children wept and sent the dust to the Luohu Bridge, with the subtitle "More than 500 smuggled immigrants were collectively repatriated to the mainland yesterday, and their relatives and friends were wept and mourned in the wind."
Since then, under the influence of Ming Pao, other newspapers in Hong Kong have followed in the footsteps of Ming Pao to report on this sensitive topic. Ming Pao's stance on this incident is from a humanitarian point of view, agreeing with the Hong Kong government's approach of concentrating refugees in Wutong Mountain due to the huge influx of refugees, and at the same time calling on Hong Kong people to provide relief and provide water and food to the victims.
After this incident, the circulation of Ming Pao rose rapidly and became one of the major newspapers in Hong Kong.
And Ming Pao really became a big newspaper in the pen war with Hong Kong's "Ta Kung Pao" and others. On October 20 and 24, 1964, in response to the mainland's successful detonation of the atomic bomb, Ming Pao editorialized "Evaluation of the Atomic Bomb Explosion" and "Nuclear Bomb is a Crime", and also opposed the Foreign Minister's view that "even if you are pants, you will also engage in a nuclear bomb", believing that this is sacrificing the interests of the majority of the people. This led to a siege by Hong Kong's leftist newspapers.
(It's hard to write in detail, otherwise it will be blocked again)
For example, in the editorial of "All Credits to the Party," he directly asked Ta Kung Pao: "Why do we criticize the editorial of the People's Daily as anti-***? Is the People's Daily "Hua"? Regarding the news report of the big ***, have you ever created rumors? How many rumors have you created in total?"
After the controversy, the circulation of Ming Pao reached more than 70,000, surpassing that of Ta Kung Pao.
In the turmoil that followed, Ming Pao published more frequent editorials by Jin Yong, and in return, Ming Pao's circulation still rose, reaching 200,000 copies.
It can be said that the rise of Ming Pao was entirely due to the various erroneous reports, evaluations, and predictions of the special period in the hinterland, which led to the rise of Ming Pao and the establishment of Ming Pao's forced improvement.
Thinking about himself back then, and then looking at Qiao Feng now, Jin Yong feels that the two of them are very similar. He seized the opportunity to make Ming Pao rise to become one of the three major newspapers in Hong Kong now.And Qiao Feng seized the Hillsborough tragedy, so that Ming Pao's influence expanded beyond Hong Kong, and its influence exceeded the Chinese ethnic group.
Although most foreigners didn't know what Ming Pao was before, after the recent follow-up report on the Hillsborough tragedy, many foreigners, especially real fans, have a good impression of Ming Pao, a newspaper that abides by neutrality and faithfully reports objective facts.
This is something that Jin Yong has not been able to do in more than 30 years of running a newspaper.
"I can finally step down as president with peace of mind." Jin Yong said to Qiao Feng with a sigh and a sigh of relief.
