The bloodline series was born in Kunming in the summer of 1993, and its first exhibition was the exhibition "Chinese Art in the Nineties: Chinese Experience" at the Sichuan Art Museum in Chengdu in December of the same year.
Curated by critic Wang Lin, the exhibition features Zhang Xiaogang, Mao Xuhui, Ye Yongqing, Wang Chuan and Zhou Chunya. These artists are all members of the Southwest Art Research Association, a new wave art group. In this exhibition, Zhang Xiaogang exhibits ten works, including a "Family Portrait".
The painting depicts a family of three in a realistic way, which probably represents the artist's own family. The emaciated figure in this work already bears a resemblance to Blood: The Family, and the patches of light on the figure's face also foresee the later color-changing light lines, but the shading of the background is not as detailed as in the later works. The work, which was later titled "Bloodline: Family Portrait", was collected by the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and it was the first time that Zhang Xiaogang's work became part of the collection of an international art institution.
Xiao Yao is a personal favorite of Zhang Xiaogang's works, and he believes that if he wants to find works that echo modern history in contemporary Chinese art, it is impossible to avoid the important position of "Blood: Big Family" in contemporary Chinese art.
In 1994, this series represented contemporary China in major international exhibitions in the West, including the São Paulo Biennale and the Venice Biennale, and the artist recorded the memories of a generation of Chinese with the trauma of the past based on photographs from the Wen period.
The series "Bloodline: Big Family" marks the artist's resolute abandonment of expressionism and consciously looking for a face representing the Chinese on the canvas, moving from the individual to the nation, from the myth of personal existence to the gaze of national history, showing the artist's introspective style of leaving the early expressionism and surrealist style, which has become the most important milestone in Zhang Xiaogang's creative career and has become a recurring motif in his future creations.
