The Type 052D destroyer is the latest generation of missile destroyers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, and is now the latest improvement of the Type 052C destroyer, and it is also another modern air defense destroyer equipped with phased array radar and vertical launch area air defense missile system after the Type 052C destroyer. The first Type 052D destroyer Kunming was launched on August 28, 2012, and officially joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy combat sequence on March 21, 2014.

Origin of the name

Chinese Aegis

The origin of the name "Aegis" can be traced back to the "Aegis" phased array radar system in the United States. The "Aegis" system is translated as "Aegis" in Hong Kong and Taiwan, so when China's Type 1 modern air defense destroyer Type 052C destroyer equipped with phased array radar and vertical launch area air defense missile system is put into service, the Internet and military enthusiasts call it "China Aegis" or "China Aegis" destroyer, and the Type 052D destroyer is the latest modification of the Type 052C destroyer, so it is called the second generation of China Aegis.

In addition, after the Type 052C destroyers were put into service, the Chinese Navy also built two Type 051C destroyers, equipped with Russian-made phased array radars and vertical launch systems. Therefore, it is known as the "Chinese Russian Aegis". The Chinese Aegis generally refers to the 052C/D level.

Development History

On April 29, 2003, the first ship of 052C, Lanzhou (port number 170), was launched, on October 18, 2005, it officially joined the South China Sea Fleet for service, and on December 26, 2005, the same class ship Haikou (board number 171) entered service, becoming the first modern air defense destroyer of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy equipped with phased array radar and vertical launch area air defense missile system.

Due to the use of new technologies in the Type 052C destroyers, after the two Type 052C destroyers were put into service, the second batch was not built for nearly five years, but the new technology was tested, digested, absorbed, and the construction of the second batch of Type 052C destroyers began in 2010, and a total of 4 were built this time, and now all have been completed and put into service.

While digesting the technology of Type 052C destroyers, China continued to develop a new generation of destroyers, and improved the technical shortcomings of Type 052C destroyers, and began to build more advanced Type 052D destroyers at the same time as the construction of the second batch of Type 052C destroyers. The first Type 052D destroyer Kunming was launched on August 28, 2012, and officially joined the combat sequence of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy on March 21, 2014. At present, it is known that 2 Type 052D destroyers have been put into service, 2 ships of the sea type, 4 ships of outfitting and 2 ships under construction, and the number of ships to be built in the first batch is expected to be 12 ships, indicating that the technology of the ship has been fully matured.

Design improvements

Ship type

The basic shape and layout of the 052D is the same as that of the 052C, but the details and equipment have changed considerably. The Type 052D's superstructure has a greater angle of inclination to provide better stealth, and in addition, the sides of the building are retracted at a greater angle to the depths, resulting in a narrower front of the bridge and a larger inclined part of the phased array mounted on both sides. The contour and configuration of the rear hull of the 052D are basically the same as those of the 052C, but the structure of the tail building has been significantly changed, first of all, the hangar has been moved from the left to the middle position, and the two sides have been added with a similar enclosed cabin as the 054A, and the rear mast used to carry the 517HA radar Yagi antenna has also been moved forward, because a set of vertical launch systems are set up between it and the hangar, so the 517HA radar is moved forward and away from the missile flame.

tonnage

At the beginning of construction, it was once rumored on the Internet that the displacement of the Type 052D destroyer would reach 10,000 tons, because the world's mainstream destroyers \ cruisers are basically around 10,000 tons, such as the Russian Glorious-class cruiser with a full load displacement of 11,200 tons; The American Ticonderoga-class cruisers had a full load displacement of 9,600 tons, and the Arleigh Burke-class II-class destroyers had a full load displacement of 9,300 tons; Japan's Kongo-class destroyers have a full load displacement of 9,400 tons, and the Atago-class destroyers have a full load displacement of 10,050 tons; South Korea's King Sejong-class destroyer has a full load displacement of 11,000 tons.

After the 052D destroyer is officially put into service, the basic ship type and layout are roughly the same as the 052C, so the displacement cannot be too different from the 052C destroyer, according to the official data released by China, the standard displacement of the Type 052C destroyer is 5980 tons, and the full load displacement is 6800 tons, so it can be inferred that the maximum displacement of the Type 052D destroyer will not exceed 7500 tons. The German Saxon class is at the same level.

radar

Type 052C destroyers use the first generation of domestic "Heart of the Sea" Type 346 active phased array radar, while Type 052D destroyers use a new type of 346A phased array radar, this new phased array was first exposed on the Bisheng comprehensive test ship in June 2012, the radar shape tends to be square, the area is also larger, the antenna area is increased, more T/R units can be accommodated, and the transmission power of a single T/R unit is enhanced, increasing the power of the radar. The arc-shaped cover of the Type 346 phased array air-cooling system has been eliminated, indicating that China has developed a liquid cooling system (cooling inside the antenna) with an active phased array system to accommodate the increase in overall heat generation. Due to the large cooling capacity of the liquid cooling system and the enlargement of the antenna array, the output power and continuous operation performance of the Type 346A phased array should be better than that of the Type 346 radar. Judging by the general law, the larger the interface of the phased array radar, the more T/R units are stronger and stronger, and the radar of 052D is now the world's largest mass-produced shipborne radar with the highest transmission power, and if it does not lag behind in signal processing, then its detection range will also rank first in the world.

Naval gun

The Type 052C destroyer is equipped with an H/PJ-87 single-barreled 100mm 55 times diameter naval gun, and the Type 052D destroyer is replaced with an H/PJ-38 single-barreled 130mm 70 times diameter naval gun, which is a domestic version developed by China with reference to the Russian AK-130130mm 70 times diameter naval gun. It was developed by Zhengzhou Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 2005, and the production work was carried out by the Second Machinery Manufacturing Factory of Inner Mongolia. The original AK-130's 130mm gun body used a two-way feed, while the Chinese version was changed to a one-way feed in order to reduce weight and simplify the structure. In order to save weight, the Chinese version of the 130mm naval gun uses a large number of aluminum alloy components without affecting the structural strength. The Chinese version of the 130mm naval gun weighs about 50 tons of gun, and the turret with a stealth appearance is made of fiberglass. With a firing range of nearly 30 kilometers and a rate of fire of about 40 rounds per minute, it has the ability to launch rocket extended-range guided projectiles, with a range of more than 100 kilometers, which is the first time among the surface ships of the Chinese Navy. The appearance of the H/PJ-38 single-barreled 130mm 70 times diameter naval gun on the 052D means that the Chinese Navy will regain the ability of naval guns to bombard the shore.

A new type of drooping hair

Another major improvement of the Type 052D destroyer is to abandon the special vertical launch device of the 052C rotary type Hongqi 9 missile, and replace it with a chocolate checkered general launch device, similar to the American MK-41 vertical launch device, equipped with four groups of eight vertical launch systems in front of the bridge, and the hangar structure is equipped with another four groups of eight vertical launch systems, with a total of 64 units of eight launch devices on the ship.

In accordance with the national military standard GJB5860-2006 promulgated by the National Defense Science and Technology Commission of China on December 15, 2006 and implemented on May 1, 2007 [052C/D bow comparison], that is, the "General Requirements for Universal Vertical Launchers for Surface Ship Missiles", the first general-purpose, hot and cold shared shipborne vertical launcher is compatible with cold-launched HHQ-9 air defense missiles and other cold/hot projectiles. The biggest advantage of the universal vertical firing device is that it is convenient to mix missiles for different purposes and can perform multiple tasks at the same time. Moreover, the footprint of a single unit of the 052D vertical launch device is larger than that of the American MK-41 vertical launcher, which means that it can be loaded with missiles with a larger diameter, which can make up for the shortcomings of domestic missiles that are inferior to American products in terms of miniaturization. In addition, the large area of a single unit will also facilitate the loading of new medium-range ship-to-air missiles in the future in the form of "one pit and four bombs."

Types of missiles

The Type 052D destroyer is still in the verification stage, so the configuration of missiles has not been determined, but according to the development of China's missile technology in recent years, some can still be inferred

Anti-aircraft missiles

Haihongqi 9 is currently the most important long-range air defense missile in China, unless China can develop a more advanced long-range air defense missile, otherwise Haihongqi 9 must be the standard configuration of Type 052D destroyers;

Whether the medium-range air defense missile can be installed on the Type 052D destroyer depends on the integration into the "one pit and four bombs" method of loading, and it is not ruled out that new types of ammunition will be developed;

The short-range anti-aircraft missile has been determined to be 24 units of Haihongqi-10

In terms of close defense, a Type 730 30mm close defense gun is still maintained in front of the 052D bridge, which forms a front and rear match with the Haihongqi 10. This combination mode can expand the multi-target capability of short-range anti-aircraft missiles while the close-in anti-aircraft artillery ensures the last line of defense.

Anti-ship missiles

The anti-ship missile equipped with the Type 052C destroyer is a 2×4 inclined YJ-62 heavy anti-ship missile, which is a type of shore-based heavy anti-ship missile, and the technology is relatively backward, while the Type 052D destroyer is canceling the tilting anti-ship missile launcher and integrating the anti-ship missile into the vertical launcher, so it will definitely be equipped with a new type of heavy anti-ship missile.

At the 9.3 military parade, China showed a new model

Heavy anti-ship missile, YJ-12, but this type of missile should be an airborne anti-ship missile, should not be configured in 052D.2014 November, CCTV in a "new missile to participate in the live fire exercise" in the report, there was a vertically launched new anti-ship missile to destroy a target ship, and from the CCTV report it can be seen that the missile was launched by the Chinese Navy comprehensive test ship, not an ordinary combat ship. The Navy Test Ship is a type of ship specially built for testing, researching, and developing new naval equipment, and is a platform for carrying and testing new naval weapons. Judging from the sleek appearance of the missile, it is not the familiar YJ-83 \ YJ-62\YJ-12 series anti-ship missile, so some analysts believe that this vertically launched new anti-ship missile is China's latest generation of ship-based vertical-launched YJ-18 anti-ship missile, so the possibility of configuring this type of missile on 052D in the future is extremely dog.

Rocket-assisted torpedo \ anti-submarine missile

In recent years, China has developed very rapidly in rocket-assisted torpedoes \ anti-submarine missiles, and three models of the Changying series have appeared, but the official entry into service of the main model is to see the integration of "one pit and four bombs" technology

cruise missile

At present, China has only one type of ship-launched surface-to-surface cruise missile, Donghai 10, and it is still under development, because China's current demand for ground-to-ground cruise missiles is not urgent, so the progress of Donghai 10 is not fast, on the contrary, the land-based version of Donghai 10, the Changjian-10 ground-to-ground cruise missile

9.3 The official appearance at the parade and the tonnage of the Type 052D destroyer is small, and the installation of the ground cruise missile has the feeling of a small ship carrying a giant ship, it is estimated that the Type 052D destroyer will only be equipped with a ground cruise missile for verification \ testing, but it will not be used as a formal weapon, and the ground cruise missile should be assembled on China's newer generation of Type 055 destroyers.

Although Russia launched cruise missiles with Type 11661 frigates with a displacement of only 1800 tons and 21631 light missile ships with a displacement of only 900 tons when attacking IS, this was Russia's helpless move, first, Russia lacked a large surface platform, and second, it was actually launched as an anti-ship cruise missile rather than a standard ground-to-ground cruise missile.

Other improvements

Other improvements to the 052D include the abandonment of the Russian-style "music station" radar, the abandonment of the meter-wave warning radar with the Yagi antenna, and the installation of a birdcage antenna on the rear mast, the purpose of which is not known for the time being, and it is likely to be a new type of anti-stealth radar.

Overall rating

On the basis of a displacement of about 7,000 tons, the Type 052D destroyer has become a type of destroyer with outstanding air defense capabilities and a very balanced set of anti-ship, anti-submarine and land attack capabilities. In addition to the lack of advanced power system, its comprehensive combat capability is more powerful than the British Type 45 destroyer, the Japanese Akizuki-class destroyer, and the French-Italian Horizon class, which are the latest Western destroyers with a full load displacement of about 7,000 tons.

Although the displacement of the 052D is insufficient, resulting in a small number of vertical hair units and insufficient mission flexibility, considering that the Chinese Navy is developing a new generation of 10,000-ton Type 055 destroyers, the performance of the two is appropriately graded and used together, which is the best solution to take into account both performance and economy. At present, the Chinese Navy still has 9 old Type 051 destroyers in service, and if it is replaced 1:1, it is estimated that 8 more Type 052D destroyers will be built, bringing the total number to more than 10. On the basis of the 052D and 052C fleets, if several more 10,000-ton destroyers are added, the future strength of China's aircraft carrier battle group will be very considerable.

In short, in the tonnage of about 7,000 tons, the Type 052D destroyer can be called the world's first.
