Chapter 36: The Battle of the Fortress (1)
The horde of corpses soon approached the Costa Fortress, and although they rushed to the Costa Fortress from the south almost non-stop, the emotionless corpses were no less tireless, scrambling towards the gates of the Costa Fortress, trying to draw the creatures in front of them that were still burning with the fire of life into the embrace of death.
"Rockets, fuel!" Alexander shouted from the city walls.
Countless arrows with flames flew out from behind the city walls, and they landed densely in the sea of corpses, which was so large and crowded that almost none of the burning arrows missed. The flames on the arrows ignited the corpse oil on the corpses, and many of them burned as a result. Flames and sunlight are rare things for undead creatures to fear, and now many of the walking corpses are writhing uneasily because of the flames on their bodies, and many of their companions around them have also been ignited, and the flames that were originally scattered gradually spread in the sea of corpses.
Although the results of the first wave of flaming arrows were very obvious, not a single fighter cheered at it. They all understood that these burned walking corpses were hardly a drop in the bucket compared to the sheer number of corpses. In fact, even all the warriors, including Alexander, did not think that they could destroy all the enemies here, after all, the number of walking corpses was hundreds of times that of their own, and even if they all stood still and let themselves kill, it would be impossible for each warrior to cut off hundreds of heads. All they want to do is to block the sea of corpses from going north, and as for when to block, no one really wants to think about it, because this is a problem that makes people desperate to the point of being completely powerless.
Boom! Boom!
Several powder kegs placed in front of the Costa Fortress were ignited, and the explosion destroyed a number of walking corpses, but again, in terms of overall numbers, the sea of corpses was barely reduced in the slightest.
Several aberrations of corpse piles made up of corpses walked up to the gates of the Costa Fortress, terrifying monsters that the craziest words could not describe. They were four or five meters tall, covered in horrible abscesses and rotten flesh, and their heads, arms, hands and feet grew almost irregularly on all parts of their bodies. Many of their heads have painful expressions, and their mouths are constantly wailing, magical sounds that can affect the minds of living beings, and without good protection, it only takes a few seconds for weak humans to completely lose their minds under the wail.
A warm light emanated from the General's Tower of the Costa Fortress, the priesthood of the Church of Tomorrow. Believing in the oracle of their lord Perro, they voluntarily came to the Costa Fortress to help the warriors of the empire resist the tide of death. With an elaborate array of divine magic, a high-ranking priest spread the radiance of the sun god to every corner of the fortress with the help of several mid-level priests. All the warriors bathed in the light felt lighter, and even the shadow of death that had always hung over their hearts dissipated a lot.
"Praise the Light!!"
Many warriors shouted, and they sincerely thanked the sun god for the protection they had provided. In fact, many soldiers who have experienced several major wars understand that in this war, without the help of Pastor Perro, I am afraid that it will be difficult to support the current situation with the power of the imperial military alone. Of course, the magic items and mage support provided by the Imperial Academy of Magic are also very important, but compared to the Order of Tomorrow, which naturally restrains necromantic creatures, their influence is still a little smaller after all.
In contrast to the warriors, the necromantic creatures became weakened by exposure to the Light. A few of the weaker walking corpses even slowly melted directly under the Light, and those who were able to resist the Light became fragile and sluggish. But the aberrations had enough power to stand up to the Light, and they roared as if enraged, and together they charged towards the gates.
Poof!
They trampled on many of the necromantic creatures that stood in the way of the aberrations, and the aberrations slammed into the gates without slowing down.
"Whew!"
Several of the deviants who came into contact with the gates screamed, and the priests of the Order of Tomorrow had already drawn a magic circle on the gates with holy water, and any necromantic creatures that touched the gates would be burned by the divine power. Several of the aberrations tried to retreat, but more aberrations rushed forward, the aberrations in front of them pushing and shoving, so that the poor undead were forced to squeeze the gates, and they were completely reduced to ashes under the scorching heat of the circle.
The rest of the deviants were completely unmoved by the death of their companions, and along with the other walking corpses, they stormed the gates, trying to use their misshapen, dark bodies to smash their way through the devouring of the living. After destroying a dozen or so aberrants, the light of the magic circle on the city gate finally dimmed. The surviving aberrations fought harder against the gates, but they remained impregnable under the repeated reinforcements of the warriors.
Oil-coated rolling stones continue to fall from the walls, and the walls of the Costa Fortress are like the death lines of these undead creatures, no matter how many of them come, they will all fall under the walls of the Costa Fortress. And the battle has been going on for more than an hour, and the soldiers of the Human Empire still have not suffered any casualties. But the more undead creatures die, the heavier the human warriors' hearts become. Because they saw that even though the corpses of the undead creatures under the city walls were piled up, the sea of corpses that could still move was still endless.
Gradually, the corpses piled up under the walls were getting taller and taller. The fighters all clutched their weapons, they understood that the real battle was about to begin.
In fact, fighting against these corpses with almost no scheming and discipline, the well-prepared Human Imperial legions will be unscathed at the beginning of the battle. With well-prepared fortifications and a variety of war equipment, human warriors were able to destroy a large number of walking corpses unscathed in the early stages. But there are three most terrifying places in the sea of corpses.
The first is the hopelessly large numerical superiority. You must know that the number of walking corpses destroyed in the early stage of each battle is indeed very impressive for the Imperial soldiers, but from the perspective of the sea of corpses, it is not painful at all.
The second characteristic is that they are never tireless. The battle with the sea of corpses can never be solved in a day and a half, because these corpses are never tireless and never need to rest. So in the face of the sea of corpses, the battle will never end unless they are wiped out.
And the third characteristic, and the most frightening, is the contagiousness of the walking dead. Every fallen soldier has the potential to get up again and face each other with a sword against his former comrades.
It is precisely because of these three characteristics that human beings have never won even one victory in the battle against the sea of corpses. But today......
"Today, you will never be able to take a step forward!" Alexander, roaring, leaping high into the air and towards the densest concentration of walking corpses on the periphery of the city walls.
The second prince of the empire bombarded the sea of walking corpses like a human cannonball, and in countless battles, Alexander's fighting spirit level had reached the peak of level nineteen. Now, the divine fighting spirit that had been tempered for thousands of years suddenly erupted from his body, blowing away all those rotten and filthy walking corpses.
"Warriors of the Empire, I will always be at your forefront!" Alexander roared.
"For the Empire! For Your Highness!" many warriors also jumped out of the wall, and at this time most of the outer part of the wall was already piled up with dead walking corpses, and it was more appropriate to walk out of the wall than to jump out of it. They roared and drew their weapons, engaging the clumsy walking corpses.
