(hereinafter referred to as Shanda Network) officially announced that it would increase the registered capital of 100 million yuan to its wholly-owned subsidiary, Shanghai Xuanting Entertainment Information Technology Co., Ltd. Xuanting mainly operates the starting point Chinese website (hereinafter referred to as the starting point website). This is the third time since Shanda Network wholly acquired Qidian.com in October 2004, and it is also the largest one.

golden age

The domestic online bookstore appeared after 1997, and the free space provided by companies such as NetEase provided a material basis for the development of the early book station. In that era of private Internet use, many netizens who liked to read books opened their own personal websites.

In March 1998, the "City of Literature" was launched, and the number of page views on the site has exceeded 1 million per month, and the number of email subscribers has reached 10,000.

On July 10, 1998, "Book Road" was officially founded and has developed into a large-scale literary website with more than 10,000 daily visits to its homepage. Since its launch in January 1999, the mailing list has reached 5,000 subscribers in just three months.

In the early days, the online book sites were mainly reprinted, and the awareness of copyright was weak. Some websites enrich the content of the website by scanning physical books such as martial arts and romance onto the Internet, while more websites are reprinted directly from other websites. In this case, the content of each station is much the same.

During this period, serialized works such as "Double Dragons of the Tang Dynasty", "Star Wars Heroes", "Weishilu", and "The Legend of Enma" became the killer tools for various book stations to attract readers. Many new readers are exposed to the Internet in order to catch up with Huang Yi's "The Legend of Double Dragons of the Tang Dynasty", "because it is a serial, only one volume is published in Hong Kong a month, and the Internet has naturally become the best way to get a sneak peek." Which station uploads quickly, which station sweeps the school with high quality, which book station can attract more readers.

In the early book stations, Crouching Tiger Ju's proofreading reputation was the best, and the proofreading of its included works was exquisite, and it became the first choice for netizens to include it for a while. While sweeping the physical book of the school, Crouching Tiger House also serialized original works such as style and water dragon chant on the website. It can be said that in terms of the quality of the works alone, Crouching Tiger House should be the best online book station in that era. However, due to the small overall number of works in the collection, the traffic of the website is not always comparable to that of those that are integrated in the book market. Instead, the Golden Book House, which adopted the Crouching Tiger House sweeping version, became one of the top ten most influential personal sites in Chinese mainland relying on its massive works and detailed classification, and won the runner-up in the 98 personal homepage competition.

At that time, the Internet was still dominated by portals, and readers found that most of the new literary websites were accessed through portals such as Yahoo, or through friendly links between sites. Links are almost the only way for many websites to develop new members, and it is difficult for new websites to enter.

In this environment, Golden Book House has taken advantage of the first-mover advantage to firmly occupy the position of the leader of the online book station. It is known as "reading online and not knowing the golden bookstore, and it is in vain to call it a net worm".

With the development of the website, Golden Book House noticed the problem that "the proportion of online original works is not enough, and the importance of book reviews is not enough", and set up a column of "Netizen Originality" and began to cultivate online originality.

It can be said that judging from the monopoly position of the Golden Book House at that time, as long as it does not make too many mistakes in its development, it is difficult for other online book sites to threaten it.

However, the intervention of capital changed the trajectory of fate.

In December 1999, Doremi Chinese acquired 16 of the top 20 personal websites in NetEase's personal website ranking for 4 million yuan. Including the Golden Book House, China Football Network, Haikuo Sky Download, Xiaolin Guangji and other well-known domestic websites.

After the acquisition of the Golden Book House, out of copyright considerations, it did not dare to be too free to plagiarize and copy in operation, and many readable works could not be included in it, but there were not many originals, resulting in the gradual loss of readers, and the initiative to give up the hegemony of the online book site.

Almost at the same time as the acquisition of Golden Book House, Boku was founded in Silicon Valley in the United States and engaged in large-scale recruitment in Beijing. From a well-known book newspaper in China, the newborn Boku poached more than a dozen editors and reporters in one fell swoop, many of whom were still the backbone personnel of the newspaper, which caused a lot of shock to the entire publishing industry at that time.

With the support of U.S. industrial capital rather than venture capital, and the presence of senior book industry figures, Boku's future was once favored by the industry. At the beginning of the business, Boku's series of promotional activities were also dizzying: first, it carried out overwhelming advertising in major media, and then cooperated with China Youth Publishing House, Peking University and other units to launch activities such as "Walking the Yellow River" and "Dunhuang Tour", which made a big splash, and then acquired a large number of electronic copyrights of works, and signed cooperation agreements with a large number of writers such as Wang Shuo and Chen Cun in the name of cultivating China's "Stephen King". It can be said that in order to expand its popularity and website views, Boku has indeed put a lot of thought into it.

However, the spirit of paid downloading and paid reading advocated by Boku is incompatible in this era of Internet hegemony where free has become the common rule. Piracy is rampant, and its most important upstream resource – thousands of e-books signed with almost all of the famous Chinese writers, authors, and scholars – has not been exploited at all. In addition, the network conditions at that time were not available, the number of Internet users was small, the network speed was slow and expensive, and there were no convenient payment conditions.

After the first investment, the investor refuses to make additional investment on the grounds that the profit model is unrealistic. By the end of 2001, the collapse of Boku announced the failure of the country's first attempt at ebook charging.

Silver Age

With the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2000, when most of the free space disappeared and earlier personal websites were shut down, the BBS in the West Continent became a new center of online fantasy literature at a relatively low price, and many famous book stations started here.

In January 2001, four literary forums, including Self-Entertainment, Single-mindedness, Red Dust Pavilion and May Sky Bomb, announced their withdrawal from the Western Continent and established the Dragon's Sky Original Alliance website, marking the arrival of the Silver Age.

Since most of the early online book sites have gone out of business, and the Phantom Sword Book League is still running back and forth for the space of the website, Dragon Sky quickly replenishes the space left by the Golden Book House with the stable space and the popularity accumulated in the Western Continent BBS. Become the well-deserved boss of the fantasy book station.

After the departure of Long Kong, BBS such as Baizhan and Sky Eagle gradually rose in the Western Continent. But in terms of popularity, it is far from being comparable to Longkong.

Longkong was in full swing in that era, there was no website without Longkong's resources, no author didn't know Longkong at that time, no reader didn't go to Longkong at that time, his development height, and monopoly, no book station can reach.

By the middle of 2001, with the increase of traffic, Longkong's server resources were insufficient, and the access speed became slower and slower, and it began to reach the point of unbearable, which also made its popularity slowly decline, and its leading big brother status was more and more challenged.

In order to get out of the predicament, Longkong began to look for a new direction of publishing.

At that time, there were two development directions, one was to invest money in the purchase of new servers and expand the Longkong website, so as to maintain the monopoly advantage on the Internet, but the prospect was unclear; the other was to abandon the development of the website and take the route of physical book publishing.

In the end, Longkong chose a wrong judgment that it could not regret, gave up the development of the Internet, and went all out to enter the publishing market. After the establishment of Beijing Fantasy Culture Company, he signed off the best original works on the Internet at that time, bought out a large number of works on the website, gave up online updates, and carried out publishing operations. Longkong's move directly led to the depression of the Internet at that time, and indirectly caused the rise of emerging websites such as Crawl and Cuiweiju.

It was from that time that Longkong gradually changed from the leader of the online book station to a bystander. In the next three years, Longkong has been relying on the works bought out in 01 and 02 to eat the old books and slowly publish. No longer participate in the competition for the territory of the online book site. It is the only veteran website that has not opened a VIP in the VIP enclosure movement that swept the entire fantasy literature world in 04.

The third-generation alliance leader of the network book station, the Phantom Sword Book League, was established in October 2000 by individual book stations such as Shuqing Xiaozhu, Stone Book City, Xiaoshuting, and Ningfeng Tianxia.

The interface is largely based on the small kiosk created in July 2000.

For a long time after its establishment, the Phantom Sword Book League has been running around to find a stable space. From global interconnection to myrice, and then to Wenzhou Unicom. It wasn't until January 2002 that the space of the Phantom Sword Book Alliance gradually stabilized.

With the stability of the space of the Phantom Sword Book Alliance, the authors and readers who were lost due to the problem of the dragon sky network speed poured into the Phantom Sword, and gradually established the status of the Phantom Sword Alliance.

Following in the footsteps of Longkong, more and more literary BBs have become independent from Xilu and set up their own websites. Among them, the more famous ones are Sky Eagle, Cuiwei and so on.

In November 2001, Bao Jianfeng and other authors who love fantasy writing and creation founded the Fantasy Literature Association in Xilu. In May 2002, he prepared to establish a literary personal website, and changed its name to the Original Literature Association - Starting Point Chinese Network, referred to as Starting Point.

On May 15, 2002, the day of the establishment of the starting point Chinese network, Jiangnan samurai broke into the starting point to celebrate the establishment of a chat group, and criticized the starting point at that time's library system, and the starting point was speechless. In the end, he won the victory of this fateful battle, usurped the power of the construction of the starting point website, hid the sword in Jiangnan, and called himself "Tibetan Sword Jiangnan" from then on. The gears of fate began to turn......

Later historians lamented this: "By chance...... The meeting of several people...... changed the fate of literary websites".

Silver Age websites had to constantly look for ways to make money in order to pay for increasingly expensive space. In the case of the depression of online advertising, the goal is to focus on physical publishing. While acting as an agent for the publication of traditional Chinese books, we are actively looking for ways to publish in simplified Chinese.

Most book stations, such as Cuiwei, Tianying, Phantom Sword, and Longkong, have tried to publish in simplified Chinese, but most of them have failed. Only Dragon Sky successfully published four books in August 2002, including "Lost Continent", "Weishilu", "Dream Space", and "The Legend of Enma".

However, the booksellers who claimed "I will buy the book if you publish it" have disappeared without a trace, and there are few orders. Analysts who ridiculed the number of sales of Fantasy in Taiwan were shocked. As a result, the subsequent publication of simplified Chinese has been in a state of half-deadness. Attempts to monetize the website through publication have largely failed.

At a time when the road to profitability of literary websites was getting narrower and narrower, Readwriting.com began to try to pay for reading online, pointing out a new idea for the website.

Another page has been turned in history......

Readwriting.com was the first fantasy book station to implement online paid reading (there was no mention of VIP at that time), and it was rushed to pay as soon as the station was built. In February 2002, the read/write network was put into trial operation, and in September 2002, it was officially put into operation. At the same time as the establishment of the website, a statement was issued that "in order to promote the development of original literature, this website plans to pay the author the remuneration for online publications, and welcomes original works to join".

Due to the good timing of reading and writing network construction sites, it was the hottest time for the SMS Alliance, and a lot of income was obtained through SMS charging. At that time, because the construction staff of the website were too eager for quick success and short-sightedness, the scale has not been developed.

The mistakes of the read/write network are mainly as follows:

(1) The fees are collected too quickly, there is no accumulation of public works at all, and the foundation is too poor.

(2) There are too many problems with mobile phone charges, although reading and writing have collected a lot of money through text messages, but the random charging of text messages has a great impact on readers.

(3) The most important point is that the exploitation of authors by the ReadWrite Network is too great.
