Chapter 299: Under the Fog (8)
Looking at the wall, Susan and Luna left the second floor. What happened to Hugh not so long ago? Susan was thinking about it. Unable to help but wonder in her heart, she began to reminisce from the moment she entered the manor, from the scene when she first met Mr. Betsy.
Mr. Betsy, as the coad-head of the Church of Light and the owner of the manor, behaved well in front of the guests. At least, Susan hadn't heard anything about Mr. Betsy punishing the hired man for something other than the grounding. In fact, all she heard in the short night were praises for Mr. Betsy.
For example, a lady cleaning the hallway will say to another, "Mr. Betsy, have sent me some more fabric today." Now I can help my relatives sew a few of the clothes that their children wear. β
However, Susan knew that what she saw and heard was only a façade in some cases. Sometimes, she wondered what she was thinking, and she had to wonder what was going on in the manor. That feeling is born from the heart, as if it is a warning for the time of danger.
The throbbing sound of her heartbeat reminds Susan of danger all the time. However, it wasn't referring to Luna, and Susan certainly did. Anyway, there was a sense of depression that made Susan worried. As a result, Susan could only respond according to her inner reaction, allowing herself to be more careful, even if it was a landing, even if she overheard someone's words.
Frowning and unable to take it easy, Susan gradually forgot about Luna, the Dark Moon Maiden who pretended to be an innocent girl. Luna, that's straightforward. So, when Susan was distracted, Luna tugged at Susan's left arm again.
"Sister, we're already in Hugh's backyard. Luna, gesturing to the pile of logs in front of her that was piled under the north wall.
Susan followed Luna's point, and of course saw the pile of wood piled up as high as a rockery.
The hired hands were busy, and even though everything seemed to be in order, Susan saw the clues. She didn't know if Luna had seen that one of the hired men had glanced at Susan.
That kind of glance is as if worrying about someone discovering the work in hand, or worrying about the revelation of something. But when Luna says she's going to help out in the backyard, why didn't Perry and Virgil stop her?
Could it be that Perry and Virgil didn't care about the manor?
As if, Hugh was an accident.
Just as Susan was about to be stunned, Hugh reappeared. This time, Susan felt a chilling feeling about the boy named Hugh.
"You, you're here. Hugh said in surprise.
Listening to Hugh's tone, Susan almost felt that coming to the backyard was not allowed. At that moment, the hired men stopped what they were doing. The strange look in the eyes of the hired people made Susan very uncomfortable. Almost every hired worker was telling Susan to get out of here with their eyes.
Subconsciously, Susan grabs Luna's right hand for not being politely welcomed. After turning, she dragged Luna towards the east side of the castle. During this time, Susan doesn't even realize that Luna is struggling, nor does she hear what Luna says. It's as if the movement is uncontrollable and the senses are temporarily unconscious.
It was only when she reached the bottom of the east tower that Susan was back to normal.
"I've been enchanted, and I don't remember what I was thinking," Susan frowned and turned, "I'm sure it was a magic that forced me to speed up my pace to avoid the place full of wood. β
"Magic? yes, it's magic, and it's a terrifying curse. Luna was calm.
Susan looked around a little, and no one was passing by at all. She said, "Mr. Betsy, you're doing something you don't want people to know." But what's hidden in those lumber piles?"
"Oh, do you see that?" Luna, who lost her girlish innocence and looked serious, "We're all in trouble right now." Your magic isn't weak, but the master here is not a small character. With a little magic, he'll take you over. β
Susan couldn't understand it, but knew she had fallen into a trap. "When did it start?" she asked.
"Yesterday, after we entered the estate, when we met with Belton. Luna said.
"So, what about you? how did you escape his curse?" said Susan, who regretted it. She nearly forgot the fact that Luna was already powerful because of the curse's effects.
"We're here for a few more days. You know, sister, we have to listen to Mr. Betsy. Luna said vaguely.
At first, Susan thought that Luna was deliberately teasing her with a girlish voice. When Susan felt the magic fluctuations in the wind, she understood: it turned out that Mr. Betsy was passing by.
"Young ladies, you shouldn't be here. If you're looking for Zoe, you've come to the wrong place. At this point, Zoe should be in the garden in front of the castle. I mean, Zoe was helping me investigate why Hugh's brother fell to his death. Belton said clearly.
Did Mr. Betsy say that on purpose?, Susan told herself.
Susan believes that Mr. Betsy is not going to do something excessive, just a warning. However, just one such encounter does not tell us anything about the real problem. No matter who you are, you have some secrets that you don't want others to know, and that's normal. So, Susan relaxed a little.
"yes, we're looking for Zoe...... However, we wanted to do some help in the timber business, so we came here. Susan was a little struggling. But she couldn't remember the idea of seeing a pile of wood. Even, the doubts in Susan's heart are fading.
Faced with Susan's transformation, Luna originally wanted to use magic to try to awaken. However, in this short period of time, and in the presence of Belton, Luna simply cannot blatantly use her magic. She could only pray that Belton would leave quickly, or pull Susan away.
Unfortunately, Belton forced a conversation. "Zoe, that's a nice girl. Sometimes, I want to recognize her as my daughter. β
"Zoe...... You say Zoe?" said Susan subconsciously.
Under the curse, Susan was visibly sluggish. This stumped Luna. If it had been a little longer, Susan would have to fall deeper and deeper under the effect of the curse. If the curse is not exorcised in time, then Luna cannot guarantee that Susan will remember anything else.
Silently, erasing a person's memories and then re-instilling something false is a trick that Luna has naturally seen, and even used herself. It's just that the curse doesn't work when it's applied to Star. As for the person who helped Sta break the curse, it was Bryson, who was going to rush to the City of Knights with Star.
"That's a good ...... I mean, Zoe is a good girl indeed. I guess Sister Zoe won't refuse. Luna forcibly corrects what she was about to say wrong. Originally, she was talking to herself: Star, that's a good girl.
"Yes, a good girl," Belton smiled and continued, glancing at Susan and realizing that the magic was working, "if I talk to Zoe, maybe she'll agree." However, we'd better get out of here together...... It's better to go to the garden than to chat here. β
However, Belton didn't forget to observe Luna. When making eye contact, Luna smiles at Belton with her eyes bent. Luna then walked around Susan's back and playfully nudged her.
"We'd better not listen to Zoe talk about it...... But what is Zoe going to talk about?" Luna pretended to be ignorant. In order to deceive Belton as much as possible, she pretended to be similar to Susan. It's as if her memories faded like Susan.
"Well, I remember what I just said, it was about Hugh's brother. Belton shrugged his shoulders. However, he shrugged his shoulders not in response to Luna, but in reassuring himself at the curse he had placed. Everything was easy and natural, and he felt that no one would find out the true meaning of this little action.
Leaving the tower to the east, Luna relaxed a little. Because, Belton didn't do what he was said at all, and the chat thing had been put aside. Now, Luna and Susan follow the gravel path to the loquat forest.
A little further down in the loquat woods, Luna vaguely saw several figures. Of course, Susan saw it too. Surrounded by those people, it was Zoe who was questioning.
"Who else but the lady can testify?" asked Zoe, staring at the other three men.
"Nobody ......," one of the men repeated, shaking his head. Moreover, he spoke like he had a chili pepper in his mouth. If you don't look at his face, you will think that he is an old man. In fact, his rough voice is only more pronounced by stuttering.
Upon approaching, Susan realized that the stammering man in front of her was a hired hand who managed the loquat groves. In the early hours of this morning, Susan also saw the bare-shouldered stammering hired man in the crowd of onlookers. Moreover, there were still a lot of onlookers at that time!
Susan guessed that if judging by the neatness of his clothes, the stammering hired man was definitely one of the first few people to notice Hugh's brother falling.
It was clear that the stammering hired man in front of her had lied, Susan was sure. Susan tried to step forward and tell Zoe what she had seen, but Luna told her to stop, about ten steps away from Zoe.
It was only after a pause that Susan noticed the change in herself. Then she felt that something was gone. The feeling of being out of sight made Susan uncomfortable, but she couldn't remember what was missing.
"I've helped you, you're on your own. Luna reminded Susan. After Belton left, Luna held Susan's hand.
As the moon god's nemesis, Luna can do it if she wants to cast magic without having to recite spells. As for recovering her lost memories, Susan has to rely on herself, and Luna can only wait.
