Chapter 18: The Lost Trail (I)
Ed didn't spend all his time in Tess's shop. He accompanied his mother to visit several "friends" he didn't even know, attended several boring banquets, and toured many parts of the city with Dorian or Norvi.
It's nice to have an elf as a guide, but Dorian is also a pleasant companion, and beneath his dwarven stubborn and inflexible surface, Ed finds the occasional flash of uncontrollable but hard-to-hide childishness.
If Dorian heard Ed describe him as childishβhe had never seen anyone more boyish than Ed, and he would dare to call him "childish"?
Vala spends almost as little time at home as he does. Judging by her increasingly tired face, things didn't go well. Ed has a legitimate respect for Scott Criesers. A paladin who disappeared to protect people in the midst of war should be respected, but he doesn't quite understand Valla's persistence. He even once had a slight grudge against the man he had never met, because the name "Scott" was often the cause of his parents' quarrels.
When the cool breeze begins to dispel the summer heat, and Ed stumbles upon Vala crying alone when no one is around, he realizes that it's time to bring his mother home.
He bought a necklace from Tess as a gift for his mother. When he put the necklace on his mother, and noticed her eyes reddened with surprise and delight, he realized that it had been a long time since he had given her a gift, even a small bouquet of wildflowers.
He didn't know if there was a guilty look on his face, because his mother held his face and kissed him lightly on the forehead, which was more like a comfort than a thanks.
"So, when are we going home?" he asked, feigned brisk.
The question made Vala's face sink: "Soon." She smiled reluctantly, "If you want to go home so much, we'll leave in two days." β
"I guess things aren't going well?" he asked cautiously, stinking that his mother would probably cope with the past as vaguely as before. In her eyes, he will probably always be a child.
To his surprise, Vala looked at him for a moment and replied very directly: "Yes." I've met the king, I've met the high priest of the god of water and the head of the Holy Knights, and they're no longer going to make finding Scott a task. β
"I'm ...... I'm sorry. Ed said that at that moment he was really sad for the sad look on his mother's face.
Walla shook her head, "Scott's friends haven't given up yet, and Sean Fletcher said that if there is any definite news, the Knights are ready to help, and I don't think I can ask for more." β
"You've done your best, Mother. Ed said sincerely.
"He saved you and me, child. He made me feel like I had relatives besides you. Vala thoughtfully stroked her son's soft black, then shook her head, "You're right, I've done my best. Let's go home. β
Before returning to Christus, Ed was dragged by Vala to the last party, the birthday party of a young lady whose name he couldn't even remember.
"Why do you think I'm bringing you to Ston Butch? You need to make more friends, Ed, and I don't want to force you to make any choices, but a lot of kids your age are already married and have started a family business - you have to know more about the world to have more choices. Vala had little patience to explain to him, and he could only patiently maintain perfect etiquette from beginning to end, except that he still did not remember the name of the lady who was not ugly.
It was nearly midnight when he got home, and when he passed by Tess's shop, Ed was surprised to find that the lights were still on, and he hesitated for a moment before deciding to stop by.
He greeted his mother and refused the guards.
"I'll catch up with you soon. He assured, and knocked on the door.
Tess soon opened the door, and was clearly not very happy to see him.
"Ahh She said dryly.
"Who do you think it will be?" Ed asked, bolting his horse to the lamppost in front of the store, "Isn't Norway there?"
"He's even more sneaky than I am these nights. Tess said dissatisfied, letting him in, "That's not right...... And it's all your fault!"
"I thought you were starting to like me. Ed feigned sadness.
"It's all your fault! you and your damn silver coin!" Tess bared her teeth at him with Mochi in her arms, "I was attacked by strange guys when I came back the night I went to steal it...... He's been distracted since he got it, I know he's looking for the woman who recognized it, but he won't tell me anything!" The red-haired thief stomped his foot anxiously, "I followed him tonight, but he dared to dump me!"
Edra shed his ponytail and scratched his hair tous, feeling that it was indeed his responsibility, but he didn't know how he could help.
"What then? I'm going back to Christus to-morrow......" he muttered.
"Finally!" said Tess huffingly, "goodbye!"
A slightly hurt expression flashed across the boy's face for a moment. Tess froze for a moment, feeling like she had kicked a puppy.
"Well," she said awkwardly, "you know I didn't mean that, and Norway really likes you." β
"What about you?" Ed asked with a grin, recovering quickly.
"If you weren't that thick-skinned, I'd probably like you a little more. Tess glared at him angrily, "Let's go home, the night in this place is not as safe as it seems." β
"Norway will be fine. Before leaving, Ed comforted Tess awkwardly, "He's an elf." β
"Elves are not omnipotent, you fool. Tess sighed listlessly, then tried to pull herself together, "But you're right, he'll be fine." Get out of here!" she kicked him lightly.
Her smile dispelled Ed's uneasiness slightly, but on the way home, the mysterious woman's pale face kept popping back in his mind.
Early the next morning, Ed rushed to Tess's shop before leaving, but Norway was still not there, and Tess began to panic a little. But when Ed said he could stay, she shook her head and refused, "It's not going to help you stay here." She said bluntly, "If necessary, I will go to his people and friends." Don't worry, I'll let Norway write to you. β
Her smile was a little forced, but the rising sun was dancing on her red hair, warm and beautiful, and it made Ed involuntarily believe that everything would be fine.
As he left Stonebutch, Ed looked back a lot along the way, unable to feel at ease. At last he couldn't help jumping off his horse, stopped the whole procession, and poked his head into his mother's carriage.
"Shall we go a day later?" he cheekily demanded, "My friend is gone, I can't just leave!"
Vala glanced at him and nodded faintly, surprisingly lifeless.
When Ed rode back, Tess was closing the shop and getting ready to go out.
"Tess!" he cried, "Is Norway back?"
"No...... Aren't you leaving today?"
"I'll go with you to him. Ed bent down from his horse and held out his hand to Tess, "Do you want to come up?"
Tess didn't hesitate any longer, and jumped on the horse's back with a gentle brag on the saddle.
"This is what you want to come with yourself, if there is any danger, I will definitely save Xiao Mo first!" she warned him viciously in Ed's ear, not wanting the guy to know that she was indeed much more relieved by his presence.
"Of course, of course. Ed casually responded, "Where are we going?"
Tess knows a few Norvi places in the city, and the elf's inn "Starry Night" is one of them. The proprietors there knew Tess and were not enthusiastic about them, but at least they didn't immediately ask them out.
"Norway did come last night, but he left very quickly, and I don't know where he went. The brown-haired, green-eyed elf told Tess that the elven who had deliberately slowed down his speech sounded a little condescending.
"Did he leave alone?" Ed asked in fluent Elfish on the side.
"He always came and went alone. "He doesn't have a ...... here," said the elf. Too many friends. β
Ed was a little strange, but Tess didn't seem to care.
"Thank you. Sorry to bother you. She thanked her politely, and pulled Edra out, who seemed to be trying to say something.
"Is that all? Don't you even need to say, 'If there's news from Novi, please let us know?'" Ed couldn't help but ask, "Why did he say Novi doesn't have many friends? Novi is such a good elf!"
"It's just that 'I don't have many friends here'!" Tess jumped on her horse and grabbed the reins, and Ed had to sit behind her, "Most of Norvi's friends aren't elves. β
"Why?" Ed still didn't understand.
"Because most elves are bastards who pretend to be self-righteous and can only see the tip of their noses!" Tess replied angrily after leaving the hotel for some distance, "You ask me why I don't leave a sentence 'If there is news of Novi, what if there is news of Novi', please do so?' because if even they already have news of Novi, he will either go to the starry night again in good sense or be dead!-"
She stopped suddenly, as if she was also frightened by such an "if", and did not speak again for a while.
