Xitang has a long history and is one of the birthplaces of ancient Wuyue culture.

As early as the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it was the intersection of Wu and Yue, so it was called "Wu Gen Yuejiao" and "Yuejiao People".

In the Tang and Song dynasties, villages and towns were formed.

In the Tang Dynasty, a large number of villages were built, and people built houses along the river and lived by the water; in the Southern Song Dynasty, the villages gradually became large-scale and formed markets; in the Yuan Dynasty, the markets gradually formed by the water, and commerce began to flourish; in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Xitang had developed into an important handicraft and commercial town in the south of the Yangtze River.

"The water of the Spring and Autumn Period, the town of the Tang and Song Dynasties, the buildings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the modern people!" is the most appropriate description of Xitang.

During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, Xitang developed into a prosperous and wealthy market town by virtue of the land of fish and rice, the economic foundation of the silk house and the convenience of waterways, and the pottery industry, rice market, food, pottery industry and other industries were increasingly prosperous.

There are also two versions of the origin of the name of Xitang Town.

Legend has it that in the Spring and Autumn Period, Wu Zixu Xing water conservancy, salt transportation, digging Wuzitang, leading the water north of Xu Mountain (now 12 miles southwest of Jiashan) to reach the territory, so Xitang is also called Xutang. Because the terrain of Xitang is flat, a horse Pingchuan, also known as Pingchuan, Xietang.

Another saying is that there is a 3,400-acre lake in the northeast of Xitang Town, which is one of the largest lakes in Jiashan. Legend of the Northern Song Dynasty Zhenzong Dazhong auspicious Fu years, there is a family surnamed Tang moved to live in the Dangbian, they see this lake swing scenery beautiful, rich in kingfishers and red ling, these two things are mascots, and just in the auspicious Fu years, on the word "auspicious charm" to call this lake dang.

In November 2003, it was recognized by the Ministry of Construction as one of the "first batch of China's top ten historical and cultural towns".

In December 2003, he was awarded the "2003 World Heritage Conservation Outstanding Achievement Award" by UNESCO.

In December 2006, it was included in the newly re-established catalogue of the "Tentative List of World Cultural Heritage in China" released by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

In 2007, it was awarded the honorary title of "China's Top Ten Ancient Towns" at the first China Tourism Forum.
