Chapter 141: Necromancer's Friend
The Giant's Spine lies at the northernmost point of the northern ice field, and beyond it is an endless sea of ice. Legend has it that the mountains made of the bones of giants are too high and dangerous to climb. It has no vegetation, except for the occasional passing bird, and the huge icefield motes inhabit the dark burrows, and there are hardly any animals left.
But in the foothills of the east-central mountains, near the ice fields, there is a series of caves, large and small, in which the ancestors of the barbarians once lived. When they came out of the caves and became accustomed to running freely on the plains, the caves were gradually abandoned and forgotten. For quite a long time, they were little more than a place to chat about a handful of necromancers, or a few barbarians who had committed crimes and had nowhere else to go, but now, many of the caverns were carved deeper into the depths of the caverns, and the huge spaces were brightly lit and tinkling to make one think they were entering a dwarven mine, but those beatings were devoid of the dwarves' concentration and enthusiasm.
"Look at us, what have we become? Dwarves who can only knock stones?"
The black-robed mage complained about the busy, lifeless sight beneath his feet, but no response from the people around him.
Those who spoke were unimpressed by this - they were necromancers, and they were always loners, and not many of them liked to talk or were good at dealing with the living, and even when they were gathered, they usually did not complete their tasks in silence. He hadn't expected an answer, but the beatings were a headache for the quiet-minded mage, and if he didn't complain, he felt like his skull was about to explode.
"When the hell is this going to end......" he muttered to himself in despair.
"Until Lydia gets what she wants. ”
A mage who hurried past them replied casually, with a hint of resentment in his voice, "Don't complain, Master Tum won't like to hear this, even if he hates them himself." ”
The mages standing on the side of the road watched as he descended the uneven stone steps, past hordes of lifeless barbarians wielding hammers and chisels and pounding rocks, and vanished into the depths of the cavern.
The mage, who had been silent, suddenly turned around and walked in the same direction, without even saying hello to the person next to him.
The ignorant mage suppressed his anger - he didn't know him, but most of the young and beautiful fellows were Lydia's, and he didn't want to make any trouble for himself.
The "young and pretty" mage walked quickly, light blonde hair sliding out of his black hood. His gaze swept over the numb-faced savages, frowning slightly, almost all of them old men and women, each with a mark carved on their foreheads—he recognized the symbol, these people had been marked, and they were to be sacrificed. Even so, the nature of the barbarians was supposed to make them strong and not easily submitted, and they would rather die than rebel against such enslavement, but they seemed to have almost lost the will to live, and perhaps the reason was that the barbarians behind them, who were obviously stronger and taller, but only silently guarded them.
Those are not living people.
While they looked no different from ordinary barbarians, the guards had long since lost their heartbeat and breath. In the light of the fire, their lifeless eyes did not move, their faces did not show any expression, but their muscles did not stiffen, and there was no sign of decay. Their steps were heavy and powerful, and apart from a slightly strange posture, they were barely recertainable as dead.
The mage didn't hide the anger in his eyes. He didn't like savages, but he didn't like barbarians who could move even more when they died, and even less like the guys who made the dead get up.
He'd already killed one, and wouldn't mind killing more, but the name that came out of the mage's mouth made him a little curious—he wanted to know what Lydia Bell was doing here.
He stopped behind a pile of rubble, enough for him to hear the two necromancers not far away.
"Master Toum. Reiner respectfully saluted Tuscan Tum. The old master is a powerful mage that even Lydia would have shown some respect, and although his gray hair has almost been stripped and his thin figure is a little rickety, no one here dares to despise him.
Tuscany gave him a gloomy look, and the tinkling sounds gave him a headache, so he rarely came here, but earlier today there was another collapse in the cave and he had to come over to see what was going on. He shouldn't have told Lydia that they had inadvertently dug up what looked like the bones of a giant while they were digging through the rocks to connect the different caves so that there was more room for more people.
Now, the female mage, who had an infinite love for bones, their "leader", asked them to dig up the huge bone for him intact. He was worried that if it was really a giant's bone, she would ask them to hollow out the whole mountain and dig up a complete skeleton of the giant for her.
But there's also a good chance she's going to summon the soul of a giant, and to have a formidable giant skeleton warrior - that's what makes Lydia terrifying, they have no idea where her power comes from, it's just that the part she's taught them has allowed them to solve problems that the necromancers haven't broken through for hundreds of years.
He didn't speak, and Reiner stood quietly until Tuscany waved his hand feebly and asked him to continue.
"Word has come from Jamun, a team of adventurers is preparing to enter the ice field and kill the ice dragon. ”
"Jamun?" Tuscany frowned, "who is that?"
"The ...... under the Giant's Axe"
"Oh......" Tuscany remembered, "what does that have to do with us?"
"Jamun seems to think that the ice dragon ...... is our friend. He said that he was always at his disposal if there was any need. ”
"Our friends?" Tuscany sneered, "necromancers don't have living friends. ”
They did have a small deal with an ice dragon before, but that ice dragon had died on some nameless peak in the Silvertooth Mountains, and the one that had flown back to the ice field not long ago had been chasing down a necromancer in circles and sabotaging their last operation, and was clearly not interested in forming any deep friendships with them.
Lydia told them to stay away from the ice dragon, and now he only hoped that the ice dragon would stay away from them as well.
He doesn't seem to be the only one who thinks so...... The barbarians thought it was Silver Fang, and the dead ice dragon was back, and they couldn't tell the difference between the two ice dragons. The night we attacked the Winter Wolf Tribe...... The barbarians thought it was helping us. And it had also attacked another barbarian camp before. Now the barbarians either fled to the Kasdan Forest and the mouth of the Kuz River, or gathered together. The camp we recently found had nearly a thousand men in it, and it was heavily defended, so it would not be easy to move as before. ”
Tuscany's face was even more gloomy - it was another headache for him, their experiment was not complete, their strength was far from strong, and the young mages had begun to be negligent in their impatience and pride, and had prematurely allowed the barbarians to discover their presence.
Even without the ice dragon, the barbarians in the midst of a threat that they had never felt before would sooner or later huddle together. But letting a powerful, unfriendly ice dragon fly overhead always made him a little uneasy.
If those adventurers could really kill the ice dragon, it would have reduced the threat to them. But it's a pity that most of the adventurers he knows are vulnerable in front of a giant dragon, not to mention that this is an ice field, and the ice dragon has a natural advantage.
"Let Jemun leave the adventurers alone, he just needs to find the man we are looking for as soon as possible......," he said at last, "and, by whatever means, get more people back - try to get them back alive, we need to get that damned bone out of the stone as soon as possible." ”
If he had the chance, he wouldn't mind helping those who at least had the guts to enter the ice field. Lydia had nothing to say about it, after all, it would be the adventurer who would kill the ice dragon in the end. However, even the necromancer, the mortal enemy of all races, can have a common enemy with people, and the thought of this makes him feel a little ironic.
And, subtle sympathy for that ice dragon.
Matilda and the children shrank into a pile of horror as they rushed into the cave, as if the worst fate had finally befallen them, and the ice dragon became even angrier.
The baby cried loudly again. The barbarian's vitality was already tenacious, and with Matilda's care, he quickly recovered his health - he could cry louder than before.
"Shut him up!!" the ice dragon roared, and it stood upright and fell back to the ground with a heavy fall, and the whole cavern trembled with it, and its long tail swept across the ground in a furious way, bringing a whistling wind and slamming against the walls, and the shattered rocks splattered and smashed everywhere.
Even the two girls screamed and started crying.
The ice dragon opened its mouth. All it takes is a simple breath and it can silence the world.
Matilda did her best to soothe the children, her voice choked and tears uncontrollably welling up from her eyes.
The ice dragon's neck turned sharply to the entrance of the cave, and the cold breath turned into a muffled sneeze, and the cave was instantly bitterly cold.
It fell to the ground with a dejected thud - the woman didn't look like Narya at all, except for the color of her eyes...... What if it's like Naria? What's wrong with it? How can a dragon be easily defeated by a few tears!
It began to regret that it should not have been curious to hear the sounds of the rocks crashing and turn into the necromancer's territory in its human form. It always felt that every time it used its human form, it made it weaker...... That's probably a punishment.
It heard the tapping as it flew east along the Giant's Spine. Unable to track the undead to their lair, it suddenly realized that the only place they could hide was the mountains of the Giant's Spine and that they were coming from east to west.
But if it weren't for those strange sounds, it wouldn't have found here so smoothly, curiosity overtook the others for a while, and it wasn't hard to sneak into the hole at all, but now ......
When it heard the news of those adventurers, it rushed out in a rage, forgetting its original purpose. It didn't know what made it angrier, if it retreated again and again, but there were still people who would rather risk their lives to enter the ice field than kill it, or be treated as a friend of the necromancer.
It suddenly raised its head, thinking of another possibility—it could also be Ed and Naria.
It has not found any trace of them, and suspects that they have given up......
But maybe they finally made it to the ice field.
