Chapter 8: The Quest for the Dragon (I)
Ed Singhal loves summer the most.
While still living in Visa, this season he would do everything he could to escape his mother's sight and jump into the Vinz River with his friends. The river, which appeared fierce and violent upstream, has become wide and gentle as it flows through the city of Visa. Ed is so good at water that he can swim to the other side in one go, where legend has it that the oldest human-built temple of water on the continent is said to have disappeared. With the help of the Black Rock Dwarves, a sturdy stone bridge connected the two banks, and the wealthy people of Visa City began to build palatial dwellings on the otherwise barren east bank, with beautiful gardens filled with gorgeous pomegranate flowers in the summer.
Ed also moved to the East Coast with his parents when he was five years old, but he preferred the lively markets and noisy docks of the West Coast. He would spend long hours lying at the window, watching the ships coming in and out of the docks, wondering how many wonderful places they had passed and how many thrilling adventures they had experienced.
He had even seen an elven ship, slender and graceful, perched quietly in a corner of the dock, just as his mother would tell him elven stories before he went to bed when he was a child. He jumped into the water and got as close as he could to the ship, marveling at its perfect form and intricate patterns, but not daring to touch it. Until someone on the boat poked their heads out and reminded him, "Be careful, we're going to sail." ”
It was an adult elf, handsome and elegant, with blonde hair flowing over his shoulders, smiling gently at him, and not looking as haughty and indifferent as the legendary elves.
He reluctantly swam away, then climbed ashore and rushed to the bridge, watching the ship sail south and disappear into the horizon under the gaze of almost everyone.
It was the first and only time he had ever seen an elf. The kingdom of the elves is in the forests of the far south, and they hardly come from the cold north.
Ed likes that elf. He guessed that was why he was so desperate to be friends with Iss when he first met him, with similar blonde hair and equally slender features. He once couldn't resist asking if Iss had elven blood, and Iss shook his head and brushed his hair away to show him his ears.
"The ears of the half-elves are also pointed. He said, "I know a half-elf...... and he shut his mouth.
"Half-elf!" Exclaimed Ed, excitedly, "where is he? What's his name? Is he your friend? Can I see him?"
"Celebrian," Isis said a little reluctantly, "we'd better not talk about him behind our backs, he'll know, he's so much scarier than Naria." ”
When they broke up, he told him uneasily: "Swear not to tell anyone, I will mention more than half elf to you." "He looked really uneasy.
Ed swore an oath, and turned to ask Naria. He had known both siblings for months, and had won their friendship by stalking them - though Naria would say it was to watch him lest he cheat on Is.
"Have you seen Keller Brian lately?" he asked.
"The half-elf priest?" Naria stared at him suspiciously, "Eren said he went......" and then she closed her mouth as well, kicking him in annoyance.
"Don't say a word!" she warned him.
In this way, Ed at least learned that the carpenter Derian's family knew a half-elf priest, which was not an unusual thing. He was determined to track it down, secretly.
But soon, he was intrigued by something more interesting.
At the end of summer. Ed had explored every secret passage he could find in the castle - in fact, there was only one. Ever since Isis had pulled him into the first secret passage, the stone house that had once seemed to him to be cold, empty and boring, was suddenly full of mystery and fun.
It's not that he really has much to gain.
Another passage he found led from an unoccupied room on the second floor to the cliff behind the castle, presumably a way to escape. Only the closed iron door left him with endless reverie, but he did not dare to try to open it. He knew full well how unpredictable, powerful, and terrifying magic was.
Then he stole his mother's keys and slipped into the locked rooms every chance he could. Although he was soon discovered and severely reprimanded and locked in his room for three days, he definitely found something awesome.
It was more than half a month before he had the opportunity to leave the castle with his father and go to his friends with something like that.
It was a map that looked quite old, and although it had been carefully rolled up and stored for a long time, the edges were still very worn, and when opened, it emitted a dull fragrance.
Naria sniffed, "I don't recognize this spice. ”
"Maybe it's because it's not a spice to eat. Ed knocked on the table solemnly: "Listen, this is important!"
"Really?" asked Naria, skeptically. At Ed's insistence, they huddled in the modest basement of Delian's house, surrounded by all sorts of miscellaneous items, and it didn't look like they were doing anything important.
"Look at this map!" Ed waved excitedly, almost knocking over the candlesticks: "Look at these!"
He poked his finger hard at the somewhat blurry, animal-like patterns on the map: "Don't you recognize it? It's a dragon!"
"Dragon?" asked Iss, puzzled.
“...... Unbelievable!" Ed was stunned, and he exclaimed, "Haven't you heard of dragons? never?!"
Iss tilted his head in confusion: "Is it strange?"
The "dragon" never appeared in the stories Scott had ever told him, neither did Carver, not even the books he had flipped through in Christus's study.
"I probably heard it when I was a kid in the minstrels," said Naria, "and it's some big, evil creature with two horns on its head, and it can fly and breathe fire, and it's so rare that you don't come across a dragon every day when you walk down the road, and even if you don't know it, it's not surprising." ”
"The only one who can breathe fire is the dragon...... It's unbelievable!" Ed lamented and repeated, "Dragons, the oldest, most terrifying, and most powerful magical creatures in the world, I can't believe anyone hasn't heard ......of dragons!"
"Alright. Narya interrupted him impatiently, "Not everyone is interested in this strange thing, what the hell do you want us to see?"
Ed's enthusiasm was dealt a fatal blow, and he collapsed on the table weakly, pointing to a dot on the map: "This map shows the location of every dragon on the continent, there are five in all...... You always recognize this place, right?"
Under his finger was a small castle. Iss leaned over and took a look.
"Christus. He was a little surprised and said, "There's a dragon in Christus......?" Underneath the castle?" he remembered the mottled iron door.
“...... Trust me, it won't get through that door. And the ice dragon won't like to stay underground. Ed gave up more explanation with a grieving face: "Look, it's here." He looked like he was almost hitting the table with his forehead.
His finger moved a short distance across the map, stopping on a small peak, on the top of which was drawn a white creature with outstretched wings, somewhat like a lizard, with a large mouth that seemed to be spewing white flames, and a tail with many spines curled up in a strange position.
"It doesn't look scary. Narnia commented: "Does it breathe fire too?"
"That's ice...... The Ice Spinosaurus spews a deadly chill that can freeze you into ice in an instant and not melt for 10,000 years. Ed said listlessly.
"Wow!" Iss exclaimed less excitedly, sounding more like he was trying to comfort Ed.
"I know this mountain, not visible from the village, it's behind the Dragon's Wings, Estero, the people of the village say there is a lake on the mountain. Narya said, "Your ice dragon lives in the lake?"
"That's not 'my' ice dragon. Ed stresses that he's not sure if he really wants a dragon, even though it sounds good: "It doesn't live in a lake either! it's not a fish...... The important thing is that if there is an ice dragon there, there will definitely be treasure!" his eyes sparkled.
"Oh, I've heard of this too, dragons love shiny things, like ...... Crow-like. Naniria said.
"It's different!" Ed jumped up with a wail, feeling insulted even to himself, "Dragons collect real treasures! gold, gems, all kinds of magical items, and maybe even artifacts with powerful magical powers!"
"So, you're going on a treasure hunt, but there's a dragon there, and you think it's going to be friendly enough to get us close to its treasures, if it's really as terrible as the legend says. "Or do you think we can ......," he said, pointing his finger at the number of people in the room, "Kill a dragon?"
"Nothing is possible. But you see, this map is very, very old, and even though a dragon can live for thousands of years, have you ever heard of a dragon around here?"
The siblings shook their heads together.
"Neither did I. So, either this dragon has been killed, you know, the great adventurers or something, or it's sleeping, and the ice dragon is always going to sleep for a long time, longer than Is. If we can find this place......"
"You will find that the treasure has been taken by the great adventurers. Naria said.
"That's a dragon's treasure! they'll always leave something behind," Ed protested indignantly, "Maybe it's sleeping soundly and won't find out that we've taken something from us!" Even if it's nothing, you can see a living dragon...... Or maybe you can see the skeleton of a dragon!"
"So, you want us to come with you?" Iss frowned, "That will take a few days, Eren won't agree." He wasn't afraid of any danger, in fact he rarely felt "scared."
"Neither will my parents, so we'll have to find the right time. Ed felt confident again, at least his friends had nothing to do with his ventures. "Naria, are you coming along?" he asked, expectantly.
If Naria didn't go, she wouldn't let Isis go with him.
Naria thought for a moment, then shrugged, "Okay, we can go and see." ”
Eren occasionally talked about the adventures of his youth, but she and Iss were never allowed to do anything dangerous, and they weren't even allowed to go into the forest alone, which did make Narya a little resentful.
Maybe it's time for the great warrior Alan Caver to know that his daughter is perfectly capable of protecting herself - and her brother.
