Chapter 16: Thieves and Elves I
At night, Ed looked at the silver coin repeatedly in the candlelight. On one side of the coin was the side face of an elf, the face was a little blurred, but the elegant pointed ears were still faintly visible, and on the other side he guessed it was some kind of emblem, and in the middle of the shield was an animal with wings that could no longer be distinguished. There are illegible inscriptions on both sides. Ed knew Elven script, but it was clearly much older.
He still didn't know what the value of the coin was. The history of elves is beyond human imagination, their dynastic changes are far less than the speed of humans, but there is still so much history that has long been lost to oblivion, and even an elven historian may not be able to figure out which era it came from.
He rubbed the surface of the silver coin as if touching the long, lost history, the lamentation of the forgotten elves. He remembered what Tess had said that the elves were leaving. Maybe one day those ancient races will disappear, just like the giants who were first born in legend. Maybe one day human beings will finally rule the world alone, but how lonely it must be.
Ed was sure he wouldn't like that kind of world.
He thought he could ask the mysterious woman in five days. If it's really very, worth a lot, he'll have to give this back to Is.
He guessed that Iss didn't know what it was. He gave it to Ed with a little apology.
"It's kind of an elf, I guess. "Of course it's not as good as a good sword." ”
"But I don't need compensation!" Ed frowned at the time, "I put you in danger, if you lose something, I deserve it!...... I'll have to pay Delian a horse!"
"Think of it as a gift from a friend. Isis said with a smile. It was the first time he had directly admitted that they were friends, and Ed was happy all day, and secretly took out the set of bows and arrows that Iss had used back in the weapons room and shoehorned them into Iss.
Of course, Delian didn't ask for his horse or his money, he just wanted him to stay away from Isis and Naria.
Ace tucked the silver coin away, rolled into bed, and soon fell asleep.
The windows are open, the cool breeze of late summer is pleasant, and the scent of late-blooming roses fills the air. It was the last bloom of the summer, but neither the scent of flowers nor the spikes could stop a scheming thief.
The petite figure slickly crossed the ledge and headed straight for the place where Ed had hidden the silver coins—probably no one had taught him to close the window when he hid something.
The thief held up the silver coin and glanced in the moonlight—and another. Then, she chuckled under her breath.
Ed's breathing in the room was steady and long, with only a brief pause as laughter rang out. The thief silently walked to the bed, bent down to the boy's ear, and blew into it.
Ed shuddered, quickly rolled to the other side of the bed, sat up and looked at the thief with a grin, his dark blue eyes looking almost black in the faint moonlight.
"You expect me to be tricked by this?" the thief lay on the bed, small silver coins rolling between her fingers.
Ed rubbed his ears, which still felt itchy, "I expect you to leave immediately without looking, Tess." ”
He had just had a gut feeling that someone was peeking out the window.
The recognized female thief shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly, "No one taught you not to tell a thief that you recognize his face?" she gently crossed her hand around her neck.
"You're not going to kill me. Ed said firmly.
Tess pulled down her hood and pouted, "Give me the silver coins, I can think about it." ”
Ed shook his head firmly.
"Come on, somebody wants to see it, and if that's not what he wants, I'll give it back to you. Tess spoke like a child.
Ed continued to shake his head, "What if that's what he wants?"
"I'll buy it, and seriously, you can take whatever you want in my shop. Tess said patiently.
"I'm wondering where all the stuff in your store comes from. Ed said.
Tess was a little angry: "I don't sell things from unknown sources, and I'm not a thief!"
She glanced at her outfit and added, "Not normally. ”
Ed still shook his head: "That's my friend's stuff." ”
"That's something that belongs to the elves!"
"You're not an elf...... Or is 'he' an elf?" Ed's eyes lit up.
Tess glared at him and didn't speak.
"If you can introduce us to each other, I'll be happy to show him personally. Ed lay on the bed, staring at Tess.
"I don't mind giving it to my friend if he agrees. "Actually, you can really ask me directly, I was going to go to you tomorrow, although it's interesting right now." ”
Tess continued to glare at her, then flicked her hair in annoyance and stood up, "Come to my store tomorrow afternoon." If you tell him a little bit about tonight......"
Ed raised his hand high, "I swear! no one is better at keeping secrets than I am!!"
Tess snorted, shoved the plain silver coin into her fanny pack, turned and jumped out of the ledge again.
"Won't you give it back to me?" Ed muttered, and then a man smirked and turned over in bed.
Just after noon, Ed showed up at Tess's shop, and was pleased to see the girl behind the counter.
The red-haired clerk and thief glared at him with a pair of sleepy eyes: "I said afternoon! It's my nap time!"
"You shouldn't have that attitude towards your guests. Ed looked around disappreciatively, "What about your friend?"
"It's nap time for him, too!" said Tess viciously.
"Do elves like naps, too?" asked Ed, excitedly, "the first time I've heard of it!"
Tess fell on the counter and didn't want to pay attention to him, there were basically no customers coming to the door at this time of day, and she hadn't tried to go out in the middle of the night for a long time, she really wanted to sleep.
"Tess, Tess, Tess. Ed exclaimed, "Do you do this every day at noon, aren't you afraid that someone will come in and steal?"
"No one would dare steal from me!" Tess buried her face in her arms, wondering why she was answering this fool.
Ed stealthily picked up a necklace from the counter and crept to the door, and when he reached for the door, a small black shadow rushed to his feet like lightning and bit him down on the calf.
Ed let out a detonated scream and crouched down to hug his legs. In front of him, a small furry yellow-brown creature no more than half the length of his arm was supporting its body with its tail, standing upright in front of him like a human, baring its teeth at him fiercely, its crescent-shaped little black ears on either side of its pointed face, and a circle of black lines next to its round black eyes.
Tess looked up and smiled smugly, "I said no one would dare steal from me. ”
"What is this?" Ed asked curiously, and couldn't help but reach out and touch it, he had never seen such an animal before. Then he found that the hand was covered in blood, and screamed again.
The creature quickly grabbed the necklace from his other hand, squeaked and jumped onto the counter, handing it to Tess.
"Good little Mo, that's great!" Tess praised her cute and faithful little pet, scratching its neck affectionately.
"I'm bleeding!" Ed accused, "I didn't do that to you last night!"
"What happened last night?" a man's voice asked curiously.
"Nothing!" Tess replied quickly.
Only then did Ed notice that there was a staircase on the right side of the wall that was designed to be extremely hidden, and from his position only the legs of the man who had just spoken, the silver-gray robe hanging down to his feet.
"Can I come down?" the voice asked, a little hesitant.
"No!" said Tess.
"Why?" asked Ed, confused.
"Because there are puppies here that pounce on elves at the sight of them. Tess glared at him.
The man on the stairs laughed, "Is that the friend you mentioned, please come up, the place where you were bitten by Mochi needs to be treated, or you will get sick." ”
Ed stood up and grinned and jumped on one foot up the stairs, and Tess threw him a cruel look and slammed her hand across her neck.
Ed grimaced and happily jumped up the stairs. The man in the robe bent down and held out his hand to him: "Be careful, the stairs are narrow. ”
His face was invisibly visible in the shadows, the sun behind him casting a halo on his blonde hair, the outline of his pointed ears looming. Ed felt his heart sing a song he'd never heard before, and he struggled to control himself not to really pounce on the elf's leg like a puppy and wagging its tail, but to calmly reach out the hand that wasn't stained with blood.
"Hello, my name is Ed Singh. ”
"Norvi. Nice to meet you. There was a smile in the elf's voice, a familiar gentleness.
