Chapter 294: A Strange Village
It happened when Thor arrived in Seabreeze County.
Seabreeze County is one of the more remote villages in the Black Reef Territory, and the size of the village can be roughly guessed from the uninspired name. However, the last forest Thor was going to was north of Seabreeze County.
In the last month of winter, after wandering for more than ten days on the outskirts of the forest south of Blackreef Town without yielding results, Thor spent another five days rushing to Seabreeze County to complete his final search journey.
Needless to say, the journey has been stormy and snowy.
The sparse lights of Seabreeze County could be seen in the distance through the dark wilderness, and Thor didn't care. His requirements are not high, as long as there is a small inn in the village that can settle down, it is enough, and he can find a farmer at will.
As he approached the village, Thor soon realized that something was wrong, because the whole village seemed too quiet, unusually quiet.
This kind of dead silence should not be found in a human settlement, and no matter how dilapidated and backward this place is, it is impossible for the whispers of cooking smoke to be so completely broken.
Thor's judgment was soon confirmed, as the two guards at the village gate had fallen to the ground.
Seeing this scene, Thor decisively pulled out the long sword behind his back and quietly touched towards the entrance of the village.
Thor had thought that the village had been attacked suddenly, but when he walked in, he realized that it was not that simple.
The two fallen guards looked normal, referring to the fact that Thor looked close and found that they were still breathing, without any wounds on their bodies, and their calm expressions were as if they were asleep.
He tried to shake one of the guards, but he didn't respond, even if Thor tried to shake him harder.
Thor frowned and glanced around, then stooded into the village.
The situation in the village is also very strange, and ordinary villagers can be seen sleeping on the road from time to time. They look like they're suddenly tired from shopping, and then they just fall asleep on the spot, but it doesn't make sense.
Because it is a cold winter, this kind of open-air sleep will only end up freezing to death. Thor stood on the road and looked around, and found that the roads in this village should have been cleared of snow normally, so the snow on the road was only ankle-deep at the moment.
Thor arrived in Seabreeze County in the afternoon, and judging by the snow on the villagers sleeping on the side of the road, it seemed that they had fallen asleep not long ago, about half an hourglass time ago.
Reaching out and trying it on the villager's neck and chest, Thor found that his heart had not stopped, but his body temperature was already very low.
The whole village was silent, with only an eerie sense of dead silence.
Thor suspected that there was an enemy in the village, perhaps peering into the darkness.
Instead of searching for the enemy himself, let him come to him
He decisively took out a bottle of sobering medicine and antidote and poured it into himself first, in case the cause of this slumber was because of some unknown poison spreading in the air, he would not be without resistance.
Although Thor never considered himself a good person, he left the villagers alone, and they would eventually die as the temperature dropped, so Thor launched a rescue while carefully observing his surroundings.
It's not noble, it's just convenient.
I found a spacious hut that seemed to be a tethered livestock, open and covered to shelter from the wind and snow. Thor then dragged the two guards at the gate of the village, along with all the sleeping villagers he could find on the road.
After lighting a fire in the middle of the clearing, Thor placed the villagers by the fire and fell into thought.
These villagers are not really saved, because their lethargy is still not lifted. Thor couldn't tell if it was sleep magic, or if it was some more bizarre trick that caused the people to wake up.
The current situation is not difficult to choose, either leave decisively, or find the enemy or the source of the strange and kill it.
If Thor learns about the unsolvable situation of this village while still on his journey, he may just turn around and go back, not caring about the lives and deaths of others. But now that he has done it, it is not his style to save half of it and throw it away.
After two spins on the spot, Thor decided to take another look, not to say anything about confrontation, but at least to figure out what was going on. The potion would last for a while, and he pulled out a cloth towel and put it over his face, then tied a knot at the back of his head, and turned to touch the village.
Thor's first target was the rooms in the villages where the lights were still on.
Pushing open the dilapidated wooden doors, the situation was similar to what I imagined, there were no living people, or no awake people, and although there were people in the lighted room, all of them were sleeping.
The burning of the remaining oil in the oil lamp is also a sign that this lethargy happened not long ago.
Thor became more and more suspicious that this was the work of the magicians, and that only a large range of slumber magic could make these people fall asleep in about the same amount of time, and Thor could only think of this possibility for the time being.
That's why Thor has never liked to fight weirdness, because it means the unknown and the uncertain.
There are too many strange things in this world, and sometimes you guess and guess, and you may not be able to find a trace of weak logic from them.
The environment of the whole village is as depressed as expected, with dilapidated grass and wood houses scattered and lit with lights. The road that entered the village just now seemed to be the main street of the village, and most of the buildings were enclosed on both sides of the road.
Thor was going to do a rough survey of all the buildings, and if nothing came of it.
Just as Thor pushed open the door of a dwelling again, the sound of swords fighting suddenly sounded from the north side of the village, and sometimes flashes of magic flashed in the air. Thor stared, and the source seemed to have been found.
The source of the sound seemed to be at the end of the main street of the village, beyond its own dark vision.
Thor did not approach blindly, but relied on the shelter of the surrounding buildings to make a roundabout way.
The brawl didn't last long, and soon fell silent again, but it was enough to point Thor in the right direction.
Soon Thor reached the end of the main street of the village, the circular village layout of Seabreeze County was very similar to the gray curtain town back then, with a street running through the village, leaving only the north and south entrances and exits.
After bypassing the last building at the entrance of the village, the vision suddenly opened up, and Thor took a closer look, and there were still many people in front of him.
It seemed that two groups of people were facing each other in the wilderness outside the village, and there were six or seven people on the weaker side. Four of them wore white magical robes, and three wore bright silver metal armor that appeared to be swordsmen and shield bearers on the surface.
There were less than twenty people on the crowded side, all dressed in dark black metal armor, and there were also black-robed mages mixed in.
There were a few people on each side of the black, white and white on the ground, and the two sides seemed to be talking, and Thor couldn't hear anything from a little distance.
No one on either side raised torches, but a pale blue glow filled the vast expanse of the wilderness, a dazzling sight that reminded Thor of the illumination technique of Lorton that he had used in the abbey a few years earlier.
Thor leaned against the corner and gave a small half of his eyes.
At a glance, he could see that the armor and magic robes worn by these people were high-end goods.
So the question is, what are these people doing here? Did they come all the way from the village to attack and defend here, or did they come from the wilderness to get into the village? Is the slumber of the villagers their hand?
With no answer, Thor crouched down and crept behind a half-man-high wall on the outskirts of the village, trying to hear what the two sides were saying. The group of people in black armor happened to have their backs to them, and their location belonged to the dark backlight, so they should not be exposed.
"Douglas the Betrayer, the Lord God of Light has been watching over you, there are always temptations to go astray and unclean in the world, but there is always a chance to turn back. A leading old man on the other side of the white magic robe suddenly spoke, as if trying to persuade someone to turn back.
"Archbishop Bernat, since the light of faith has dimmed, and no one wants to lose his life in such foolishness, I advise you, as a former Illuminati, to renounce your resistance. The black-armored swordsman known as Douglas stepped forward and shook the blood from his sword.
Thor was a little speechless, and although he only heard two sentences, it seemed that there were a bunch of goddamn gods on either side. The godless Thor had never liked this kind of shit dialogue, because the words seemed to him meaningless except to be confusing.
"Do you have to come to this point? We used to bathe in the holy light together, you are my most optimistic disciple, and the inheritance of faith will also fall on you in the future. The old man continued.
"Yes mentor, I miss it. But I'm sorry, the general trend has been like this, and there are some ways to go back, not to mention that I don't want to go back. Douglas replied.
Well, God loves the world and listens to all kinds of voices. Since you are going to go your own way, can I, as your former guru, beg you to spare these innocent believers behind me? "The old man is making the final negotiations.
"I'm afraid...... Still sorry, my mentor. It was Douglas who answered, but almost as soon as his words fell, the battle suddenly began again, and in the blink of an eye, there was a clash of swords and flashes of magic.
Thor couldn't see the exact situation of the battle, and in order to avoid being exposed, he kept his back under the low parapet and eavesdropping.
The battle behind was obviously fierce, and judging from the degree of collision, Thor estimated that these people also had at least four or fifth order strength.
"Boom~" With the sound of a magic explosion, a gap was blown out of the low wall not far from Thor.
This movement made Thor frown, and probability-wise, it seemed that it was not too safe to hide here.
The battle lasted only a short time, with screams and the sound of falling to the ground, and the surroundings fell quiet again, and it was clear that the two sides were back in a confrontation situation. Thor snuck his finger into the gap in the low wall, wanting to see how much each side was consuming.
At this moment, three or four people fell on the white robe, and there were still old men and two swordsmen and two mages left.
There are still eleven people standing on the side of Black Armor, and they are also a mixture of mages and swordsmen.
Judging from the proportion of battle losses in this short moment, the white-robed mage seems to be slightly stronger, and it is a little difficult for the black armored group to gnaw hard. It's no wonder that both sides stop and tear each other out mentally and physically.
