Chapter 60: Building a Raft

In these days of dividing sperm whales, it is likely that I am overworked and my cough has worsened, and the chest pain has become more pronounced.

If I let my condition progress like this, I'm afraid I won't last long, but there is no way for me to heal the pain on this desert island.

The only way for me to save myself is to get the raft out of this island as soon as possible, and if I'm lucky enough to return to the real world, I can be saved and reunited with my family.

Either way, I have no choice but to leave this island, and I need to do it urgently, or I will die and never leave here.

I can't help but feel a little panicked when I think of this, I don't want to die silently like this, I still have a lot of things to do, at least before I die, I can see my family for the last time.

I had already conceived of the structure of the raft, but due to the food and tools, the progress was very slow, and now the food problem has been completely solved, that is, I have the meat of sperm whales, which can be eaten for a lifetime.

Now I don't have to worry about food, I don't have to spend a lot of time collecting food, I can spend all my time building rafts.

I also knew that I couldn't rush to build the raft, because my health was getting worse and worse, and I couldn't get too tired, and I didn't want to die of illness before the raft was finished.

The first step in making a raft was to collect materials, which were the thin bamboos on the island.

There used to be some stout bamboos on the island, but most of them were used by me to build rain traps and huts, and it may be that the island is very barren, and the bamboo that has been cut down has not yet recovered.

I have been cutting down the bamboo for many days, but the progress is very slow because I don't have the right tools, only a few homemade stone axes, and it looks really slow.

My plan is to cut the bamboo into 30 cm bundles with a length of 3 meters, and tie the bundled bamboo into a bamboo raft of 3✘3 size, in order to increase buoyancy and waterproof bamboo raft, I need to use double bamboo bundles, so I need a lot of bamboo.

Since I had no tools but to use the most primitive stone axes and stone chisels to cut the bamboo I needed, it took me more than a month to cut enough bamboo.

The next step is to bundle the dried bamboo into small bundles of 30 cm, which seems simple but is still very difficult to operate.

How can you tie the bamboo strongly, if the bundle is not strong, the waves will fall apart, then it will be over.

I have to prepare some ropes before tying the bamboo, here I can only use bamboo silk to weave the rope, although the bamboo rope is strong enough but the flexibility is very poor, but I can't find a better material on this island.

I used two sticks and a piece of bamboo rope to make a pair of clamps and use it to tighten the bamboo bundle, so that I could tie the bamboo tightly and strongly, and for the sake of the sturdiness of the bamboo bundle, I tied eight bamboo ropes to the three-meter-long bamboo bundle, so that it was foolproof.

It only took me three days to tie the required nineteen bamboo bundles, and the next step was to assemble the bamboo bundles into a raft, in order to facilitate the completion of the raft in the future, I carried the bamboo bundles to the beach and then combined them into a raft.

I used some hard wood to make a 40 cm wooden wedge, and then used the wooden wedge to link the bamboo bundles in turn, and assembled the bamboo bundles into a raft with nine upper and lower ten, so that the main body of the raft was completed, and the rest was to reinforce the assembled bamboo raft.

To strengthen the bamboo raft, the whole bamboo raft is tied more carefully with bamboo and bamboo rope to increase the overall strength of the bamboo raft.

After a few more days, I added a few beams to the raft to secure the bamboo as firmly as possible so that it would not loosen in the waves.

The next step is to build a shelter on top of the raft to protect me from the wind and rain, which can also store some food to protect me from the scorching sun, and also collect some rainwater on rainy days.

It was very simple to build the shed, the frame was made of some bamboo, the roof was made of palm leaves, and the bamboo half was installed to collect rain, and finally I used some bamboo, and installed handrails around the bamboo raft, so that a decent bamboo raft was completed.

In the end, I knocked off the sperm whale's teeth again, and tied them to the pillars of the rain shelter, I superstitiously believed that the sperm whale was the legendary sea monster, and some ancient ships were carved with various sea monsters to ward off evil spirits, so I used the sperm whale's teeth as a thing to ward off evil spirits, hoping that everything would go smoothly in the future drifting at sea.

But now is not the time to get into the water, I have to prepare some food and water, and I have to wait for the next high tide, and then the buoyancy of the tide will allow me to launch the raft.

For food, I don't have to worry about it, I just roast the dried whale meat over the fire, which is the best food I can eat on the sea, and I can also collect some seaweed as a source of vitamins.

By the way, there is also a lemon tree and a few wild papayas on the island, and they have not been picked during this time when they have been busy dividing sperm whales and building bamboo rafts, and although their production is small, it is better than nothing.

One of the most important things is water, I only have seven or eight plastic bottles to fill water, which is not enough for drifting at sea, and if you don't solve the water problem, you don't have to talk about it.

I suddenly remembered the sperm whale's huge intestines, some of which were thicker than my waist, and I could have plenty of water just by processing them into water bags.

In ancient times, people used animal bladders to make water bags, and in modern times, Guan Wang used the intestines of sperm whales to make water bags.

I found the intestines that had been dried for a long time, and in order to collect ambergris, I cleaned the intestines and hung them on the bushes to dry, but with whale meat, these intestines I couldn't look down on at all, and I kept drying them, but I didn't expect them to come in handy again today.

I found a suitable intestine soaked in water to soften and scrape off the grease, then blew it up and dried it again, and finally in order to prevent the water bag from breaking, I made a few bamboo pots with fine bamboo wire and put the water bag in, so that I don't have to worry about the water bag breaking.

With a sturdy bamboo raft and plenty of food and water, it's time to challenge faith in the face of the ocean.

Let God decide whether to live or die!
