The density of liquid hydrogen is too low, and it needs a pressure pump with a very high speed to compress it, so that it can be fully mixed, and there are two pumps in the hydrogen-oxygen engine, a hydrogen pump, and an oxygen pump, and the gas from the gas engine has 80% of the power to be pumped to the hydrogen pump.
In addition, the process of storing fuel tanks in liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen engines is also difficult, liquid hydrogen -253 °C, liquid oxygen -182 °C, the temperature difference between the two is large to do heat insulation, so the cost is also very high.
The temperature of liquid oxygen and methane is similar, and the processing process of fuel tanks of the two is greatly reduced.

Compared with the basic stage rocket, the structure of the upper stage is quite complex, coupled with frequent ignition and long working time, its development can be described as very difficult.
Huaxing Rocket Launch Company also spent money to purchase the mature upper stage engine design scheme from Ermao's Southern Design Bureau, and provided an engine design drawing with a 2-axis vector nozzle.
The design of the upper stage engine provided by the Southern Design Bureau is very similar to the simple and crisp warship Bird upper stage, which was originally used by the Lavochkin R&D and manufacturing consortium in 1988 for the Mars exploration project.
There are a lot of interesting engineering solutions in the Warship Bird, emphasizing practicality and simplicity, the shape is a rough industrial minimalist design style, which can make valuable space for the satellite in the fairing, and 6 aluminum alloy spherical boxes, four of which are fuel tanks, and the other two are equipment compartments.
This kind of spherical structure that looks like a tumor is superior in the mass and volume ratio, but it is not possible to rely on the thin-walled spherical tank to transmit the huge lifting force to the satellite during launch, so the design of the support rod piercing the spherical body of the equipment compartment is adopted, and the 8 support rods form the geometric configuration of the upper and lower end face cross-section is octagonal and the shape is 6 tanks.
This design is very successful, the weight control has been done to the extreme, the struts are welded with the spherical tank, and the tank will share part of the load force, but the average thickness of the spherical wall is controlled at 1.5~2.0 mm.

Although the technology of this upper stage is very mature, Yang Jie is still not satisfied with this, and he also asked Ban Zhinong to redesign a more advanced upper stage and use a liquid oxygen methane engine as the main engine.
