Chapter 576: My Motherland (Part II)
My Motherland () Zhang Baotong 30
I was frightened, screamed, and ran out and knocked on my boss's door. The people of the boss's family are like frightened birds, wearing ponchos, trembling all over the body lying or lying on the ground covered with mats, because the windows on both sides are gone, and the wind blows in from this window and blows out from the window on the other side, just like the jet behind the plane, people dare not stand up. I lay on their side and waited quietly for fate to come.
Fortunately, the nightmarish wind only lasted for half an hour or so, and if it continued to blow for another hour or two, the small building would have to be blown down. Later, I heard that the hurricane was the most violent hurricane in nearly a thousand years, reaching the highest level of 5 before landfall. Although the strongest hurricane has passed, the torrential rain is still falling, and the house has begun to flood. But we don't feel so scared anymore. By around 10 p.m., the wind had weakened significantly. I just went back to my room.
The next morning, the sky was gloomy and the fog was deep, and everywhere I looked, it was as if the flood had just receded, and after the mud and water, there was a devastation, a large lodging tree, a collapsed house, and a water-soaked house. There were also leaning poles, canals that burst their banks, clothes and wooden utensils that were washed together by the water. It was the most painful sight I had ever seen in my life. I couldn't see the road at all, and I couldn't tell the direction, which really made me feel a kind of pessimism and despair that I only saw the monstrous flood and did not see Noah's Ark.
The boss's inn really couldn't stay, they had already packed their bags and were about to leave. So, I decided to go to Russell Town and ask the owner of the Chinese restaurant to help. I walked a long way almost knee-deep and took four or five hours to get to the airport. However, the water in the airport was deeper, so I walked towards the town of Russell, which was 50 kilometers away, and I walked for about four or five hours before I came to the town of Russell.
I saw a car carrying people to the seaside pier, so I rushed to the edge of the pier. I think as long as I can get out of here as soon as possible, wherever I go. I saw an American speedboat transporting some American soldiers out of here, including some American tourists. I ran to the gangway and said in English to one of the soldiers who was guarding, "Hello, I'm a student from Taiwan, and I want to leave here on your boat." However, the soldier replied, "No, we have ordered that no foreigner be allowed on board."
As soon as I heard this, I had to leave the docks. At this time, it was already dusk and sunset, and although the sunset was very gorgeous, I had no interest in watching it at all. If I can't find a place to stay, I'll be sleeping on the streets tonight. I walked back and forth on the street two or three times, looking for a hotel where I could stay, and inquiring about the owner of the Chinese restaurant. However, no one knows where he went.
Just when I felt a little relieved and hopeless, suddenly, I saw someone standing on the side of the street holding a bright red five-star red flag. It made my heart light up and I felt as if there was some hope. There is a saying in China that when a fellow villager sees a fellow countryman, his eyes are full of tears. In a foreign country, Chinese people see Chinese people like fellow countrymen. So, I walked briskly over and saw a man standing next to the flag-bearer, holding a sign made of cardboard that read "Hunan Zhongjian".
I said hello to the man, you are Chinese? The young man looked at me with amazed eyes and asked you are an overseas Chinese? I said I am not an overseas Chinese, I am a tourist, I am from Taipei. He politely said that he was a Taiwan compatriot. I nodded. He said to me, "The motherland will soon send a plane to take us back to China, are you willing to leave with us?" When I heard this, I was a little excited, and tears almost welled up in my eyes. I said I was going to leave here, and I've been waiting for more than ten days. He said that the plane would only go to Shanghai, and when you arrived in Shanghai, you would find a way to go back to Taiwan. I said fine, as long as I can get out of here quickly.
He asked the young man who was carrying the flag to take me to a local school and arranged for me a place to lie down and rest. I had walked for almost ten hours, and I was already exhausted, so I began to fetch water, wash my feet, change my clothes, and then lay down on the thick bedding on the floor and went to sleep. After a while, the young man came to take me to dinner, and he told me that his name was Wu Fei and that he was a technician at China State Construction Company.
There are so many Chinese around me, and they care about me and take care of me so much, so I don't have to worry about anything and be afraid. Since there was nothing to do, I stayed by Wu Fei's side and helped him stand on the streets of Russell Town to receive their company's employees and local Chinese and overseas Chinese.
Three or four days later, a large cargo ship came from Antigua and Barbuda to take us to Antigua and Barbuda, because Dominica airport could not take off and land large passenger planes, so they had to go to Antigua and Barbuda to board the plane. That morning, I boarded a chartered Antigua freighter with three to four hundred employees of China State Construction Company and overseas Chinese and left Dominica.
When the freighter started, many people excitedly waved the five-star red flag and sang and took pictures. Not many people began to sing and take pictures, but as soon as the song was sung, people ran out of the cabin and sat down together and sang: "The five-star red flag flutters in the wind, how loud the victory song is, and sings about our dear motherland, which will now be prosperous and strong." "I was infected by this atmosphere, and I also sang along with everyone as I learned.
It was an eight-hour drive from Dominica to Antigua and Barbuda, but I found it very interesting to be with everyone, and the young man named Wu Fei took care of me as warmly as my boyfriend, which made me feel very warm and happy. When we arrived in St. John's, the staff of the Chinese embassy had already arranged accommodation for us, and Wu Fei and I were arranged in the staff dormitory of a Chinese-funded company. For dinner, I had fragrant braised fish and rice.
Antigua and Barbuda, although also ravaged by the hurricane, only injured the side, and the damage was not as severe as that of Dominica. Wu Fei had worked here in the past and was very familiar with the situation here. He took me around to visit St. John's beautiful bay, climb to the top of Sydney, the highest point in Antigua, and visit the old windmills and St. John's Church. Wu Fei likes to sing, he taught me to sing "My Motherland" and "I Love You China". After experiencing a catastrophe that narrowly escaped death, experiencing this warm and beautiful time again is like stepping into heaven.
To tell the truth, I grew up in Taipei, and my impression of the mainlanders in the past came almost entirely from the propaganda and reports of the Taiwan media, and the Taiwan media always liked to report on the negative and poor side of the mainland, saying that the mainlanders were of very low quality and that they would raise their juniors if they had a little money; they said that the mainlanders were not united, like a plate of loose sand; and that the mainlanders were so poor that they could not even afford to eat tea and eggs. However, during the time I spent with them, I felt that they were honest, simple, friendly and generous, and very sincere and lovely.
I called my parents, and they asked me where I was, because they had heard reports that Dominica had almost been wiped off the face of the earth by a hurricane, and they had not heard from me, and they had been so scared that they couldn't eat or sleep for days. I said that I am now safe and sound, and that I am in the staff dormitory of a Chinese-funded company in St. John's, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, with my mainland compatriots, who treat me like relatives. I also said that Chinese mainland had sent a charter flight from China Eastern Airlines to pick us up, and the plane was expected to arrive at Shanghai Pudong Airport at around 11 p.m. on October 1. Only then did the parents put their minds at ease.
The night before we left the Chinese-funded company in Antigua and Barbuda, we had a happy gathering, and a person in charge of the Chinese embassy asked me to dedicate a song to everyone, and I couldn't help but sing "My Motherland": "A big river has wide waves, and the wind blows the fragrance of rice and flowers on both sides; my family lives on the shore, and I am used to hearing the captain's horn and seeing the white sails on the boat." This is the beautiful motherland, where I grew up, and in this vast land, there are bright scenery everywhere. ”
