Chapter 21: Swan Lake

When the familiar music rings in her ears, Qu Lihua still feels very shocked, she has only watched it in front of the TV before, and rarely goes to the Grand Theater to watch ballet performances, Qu Lihua joined the school's symphony orchestra when she was in college, and knows some symphonic music theory knowledge, although many years after graduation, she is busy with work and has not had time to go to the Grand Theater to watch ballet and opera for a long time, but these music theory knowledge still helps her appreciate art.

The music for Swan Lake was written by the great Russian composer Tchaikovsky in 1876. He used the symphonic writing technique to construct a grand musical scene, many of which have become classics. In this ballet, there are weeping wind sobs that express the pure inner world of Princess Odjeta, and gorgeous and bright dance music that expresses the sunshine and vitality of Prince Siegfried. The melody is beautiful and vivid, and when viewed on the spot, it is more immersive and realistic, which is different from the feeling that Qu Lihua used to listen to the radio.

Chinese audiences are no strangers to "Swan Lake", in China, Qu Lihua has heard the beautiful melody of Swan Lake on the radio many times, and it is still difficult to forget, Tchaikovsky used a sharp musical contrast when using the symphony, which effectively set off the theme of the work, so that the positive and negative characters have a huge strong contrast, and the magnificent scene of the symphony is displayed in front of the audience, producing a very shocking effect.

The audience who came to watch the performance was very qualified, the ballet began to perform, the lights in the audience dimmed, and the spotlights hit the stage, attracting the attention of the audience.

The actors appear in the order of the plot, and as soon as they appear, they have their own aura, the white ballet costumes are so beautiful, the girls hope that they are a white swan, innocent, kind, and beautiful, the heroine is really good, tall and thin, with long legs, good proportions, and strong movement coordination, the performance of the actor who plays the prince is also remarkable, and the prince is full of gestures, and he is a good match for the heroine.

The symphony brings the characteristics of European waltzes into full play, with a sense of luxury, and the actors appear in turn, orderly, well-trained, and gestures, all of which show the beauty of ballet art and the dancers' solid dance skills.

Speaking of the plot, Qu Lihua felt that it was necessary to explain something to the audience, so that more domestic audiences could have a better understanding of this ballet.

The story of Swan Lake is based on a folk tale in which a demon transforms a beautiful maiden into a swan, but the power of love and justice ultimately triumphs over evil. Originally, Swan Lake had two different endings, often mixed up.

In the first version, when the prince and Ogilia are dancing together in Act 3, Odetta appears at the window and begs the prince to remember the oath he has made to her, but the prince is distracted by the Demon King's spell. At the request of the Demon King, the prince raises his hand and vows of love to Ogilia, and the Demon King's plot succeeds, and Odetta leaves in despair and grief.

Suddenly lightning and thunder thundered, and the ballroom was in chaos, and the prince came to his senses, but it was too late, and he had made a new vow of love to others. The deceived prince rushes out in search of the real Ojeta.

In the fourth act, the prince and the white swan both throw themselves into the lake to die, the other swans' magic is lifted, and the demon king dies. This is a tragic version.

The second version, which is the comedy version, has a happy ending in which love triumphs over evil, the good guy defeats the bad guy, the bad guy gets the punishment he deserves, and the prince finally finds Odjeta, but neither the infinite truth nor the endless remorse can change the consequences of the breach of the contract, the spell can no longer be broken, and the prince and princess will be separated.

The demon king showed his hideous face, turning the princess and the girls into swans and drifting on the lake, and the grieving prince and princess hugged each other, and with the belief that they could not love or die, they both jumped into the flooding waves of the lake. In an instant, a miracle appeared, justice triumphed over evil, steadfast love triumphed over all evil demons, magic was broken, the demon cave collapsed, the lake ebbed and flowed, the demon king died, the magic of the other swans was lifted, the prince and princess bathed in the glow of the rising sun, and the beautiful life began again.

This is a pure fairy tale-like story, loved by audiences around the world, Qu Lihua was also deeply moved by the plot, this ballet celebrates beautiful and steadfast love, the power of love is great, and justice can ultimately triumph over evil.

What impressed Qu Lihua was the famous Black Swan Ogilia solo variation in Act III, in which the black swan performs 32 one-legged spins in one breath called "whip spins".

This stunt was created by the Italian ballet singer Pirena Legnani in 1892, in the ballet, a dancer has to play the white swan and the black swan, one person plays two roles, the heroine's dance skills are very high, generally have to go through a long period of rigorous training, in order to complete all the dance moves.

What impressed Qu Lihua was the delicate feeling, light dancing, tenacious endurance and perfect technique of generations of outstanding dancers who interpreted the completely different spiritual worlds of the white swan and the black swan, and this stunt is still preserved in "Swan Lake" and has become a touchstone to measure the strength of ballet dancers and dance companies.

After watching the performance of "Swan Lake", after the members of the delegation followed Head Xia and Teacher Su out of the theater, Qu Lihua asked Teacher Su Xiaoyu for advice.

"Mr. Su, the audience likes happy endings, why do you want to play a tragic ending?"

Su Xiaoyu said: "There is a legend that the swan will make the most poignant cry in his life before he dies, and release the most momentary brilliance in his life, so that a hollow valley sound is entangled in every corner of the world that can keep the note. ”

At the end, the heartbroken white swan looked around all the people she loved and loved her so sadly, and would rather jump into the lake than bow to the demon king, which verified the legend that the swan was dying and singing. The white swan came to the lake, and saw his beautiful reflection on the lake, all of which symbolized the stubborn personality that was unwilling to give in. ”

"The huge contrast produced by the tragic ending, the shock to people's hearts is sometimes far greater than the comedy ending, just like our Chinese poignant love story "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", Zhu Yingtai is unwilling to marry Ma Wencai, passing by Liang Shanbo's grave, hit the monument and died, after his death, both turned into butterflies, leaving a swan song for the ages, passed down through the ages, famous all over the world, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai's poignant love is deeply rooted in people, and has become an insurmountable classic. ”

Although the play "Romeo and Juliet" written by the British playwright William Shakespeare is a tragedy, the love between the two young male and female protagonists is not tragic in itself. Not only do they love each other, but they boldly pursue their love, fighting for their lives at all costs. The power of their love makes them dare to face the hatred of their family and dare to challenge the obstacles in life. They are in pursuit of a new way of life. They were not afraid to be atoning lambs for sin, so their death, though the end of life, was a moral victory. Finally reconciled the two rival families. ”

"So the shocking effect of tragedy is sometimes far greater than comedy, love in life is not perfect, even between husband and wife there are times of quarrels, sometimes the reality is more cruel than the ballet staged, good and evil are clear, punish evil and promote good, people pursue justice, just like chasing light in the dark, so the audience likes this kind of infectious story, and the dancers sing the praises of innocent love with exquisite dance skills. ”

"Tchaikovsky's masterful use of the symphony as background music has always firmly grasped the basic theme of the ballet, and the finale of acts 1, 2 and 4 is based on this theme. Tchaikovsky uses music to reveal the development of the plot of the drama and the theme of the ultimate triumph of good over evil through the technique of thematic transformation. ”

"Especially towards the end, in the finale of Act IV, this tragic theme changes tempo and becomes agitated, then from four beats to a broad two-beat, from the full orchestra to a solemn ode, and finally from minor to major and slows down. ”

It can be seen that the musical attainment of this great ballet pioneer is so high, the four-act performance, the past and the future, the plot ups and downs, exciting, firmly attracted the audience, people can not miss any of the plot, the symphony becomes a magnificent and magnificent triumphant song, showing loyal love, defeating the power of evil, and winning victory. This basic theme runs through the development of his symphonic music and operatic music. ”
