Chapter 391: Schwerin Castle

Qu Lihua tasted the food with everyone, sitting on the beach, the sea breeze at night was blowing, it was very comfortable, everyone sat together on the beach, eating barbecue, very happy.

"I think it's much happier to have food to share with everyone than to eat it alone!"

"Yes, more people are together, eat together, and there is more atmosphere!" Meng Wenjie said.

Robin said: "I often take my wife and children, take the time to come here for vacation, this is a famous resort, there are beautiful scenery, looking at the sea, the mood will be very good, we will go back after eating barbecue, I discussed with the head of the Xia group, we live here for three days, let everyone enjoy the sea view, and then we go to the next attraction, there are still many attractions in Germany, the development of tourism is very good!"

Everyone happily spent three days on the island, and then Captain Xia Yuxiang led everyone to the next stop.

Schwerin Castle is an island palace located in the center of the German city of Schwerin, it is the seat of the parliament of the former Pomeranian state of Mecklenburg, Germany, this attraction is very popular with tourists, because of its unique historical heritage and cultural atmosphere, deeply attracted everyone to visit, Robin told everyone, this place used to be the royal palace of the Duke of Mecklenburg for a long time.

"The palace must be visited, it is all built splendidly, and it took a lot of manpower and material resources back then!" Robin said with a smile.

His eyes sparkled, everyone believed in his introduction, the attractions he took everyone to were really good, and when everyone arrived in front of this palace, they were immediately deeply attracted, the building was atmospheric, although it looked very ancient, but still vaguely could see the glory of the year.

Robin began to explain, "The palace was gradually formed after more than a thousand years of continuous renovation and expansion, and its circular structure is the remains of the walls of the original Slavic castle, which was originally built on a small island in Lake Schwerin, and there are many documents and images documenting the transformation of the castle and palace. ”

"The Royal Palace, which was mainly changed and added to the old palace from 1845 to 1857, is considered a masterpiece of Romantic historicism, and in the process of renovation the French Renaissance palace was used as a model, such as the Château de Chambor-sur-Loire, many details of which can also be seen in the Château de Schwerin. ”

The Niklot at the main entrance resembles a castle under construction by Abraham Ben Jacob, a Jewish merchant from Arab-occupied Andalusia, on his way from Magdeburg to Mecklen Castle in 965.

In 973 he wrote a book about his travels to the Slavic region east of the Elbe, in which he mentioned a castle near the shores of a freshwater lake and said that it was under construction. The castle he describes is probably the predecessor of today's Schwerin Castle.

The Slavic castle walls discovered by archaeological excavations in 1987 support this hypothesis, and in 1160 when Henry the Lion led the German nobles to expand eastward, Schwerin Castle was one of their targets, and Niklot self-destructed the castle and retreated due to the strength of the enemy.

But the German occupiers also recognized the strategic position of the place, and built another castle on the same place, and in the same year Schwerin was founded, and in the same year it soon acquired a special status thanks to the establishment of a bishop's church in Schwerin, and in 1169 Henry the Lion made the territory that had belonged to Niklot's son Pzhbislav his vassal.

In 348 Nikolos was promoted to Duke of Mecklenburg, and in 1358 they bought the county of Schwerin. They moved their court from Wismar to the more central castle of Schwerin, which gradually developed from European castles in the late Gothic period due to improved living conditions and representation, as well as the development of Schwerin Castle, which is now known as the "Bishop's House" on the side facing the lake.

From 1553 to 1555 Johann Albrecht I ordered the new longhouse to be rebuilt to the north, while the façade of the palace was paved with red terracotta. The façade and the new longhouse are all real palace buildings, emphasizing the comfort of habitation without any regard for defensive performance. During the German Renaissance, terracotta tiles were used as decoration in brick Renaissance buildings in North Germany, and other similar buildings such as the royal palace in Wismar were very popular.

The terracotta tiles were made in a workshop in Lübeck, and a few years later Johann Albrecht ordered the construction of a new court chapel. It was the first Protestant church in Mecklenburg, and it was at right angles to the new longhouse.

The church was built between 1560 and 1563, its foundation is rectangular, with a high platform on the long and short sides, the layout is built according to the court chapels of Torgau and Dresden, the frame of the main door is made of sandstone, in the style of the early Venetian Renaissance, it faces the inner courtyard, and the sculpture on the door is of Jesus carrying the cross, this sculpture was made by a stonemason in Dresden. In the window box of the northern terrace there are plaster sculptures of biblical content.

Although the palace was located on an island, it still needed defenses. As a result, in the 16th century, blockhouses were set up on the northwest, southeast and west sides of the palace, which were later remodeled but are still preserved today.

Night ViewBefore the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War, there was a design to transform Schwerin Castle into a Dutch Renaissance palace. In 1617 the renovation began, but was halted by the fighting, and from 1635 to 1643 the two buildings above the palace kitchen and the church were added to the old plan, and the surface was rebuilt in the Dutch Renaissance style.

In the 18th century, a trussed building was built on the west side of the church mound, in which the Duke's painting collection was housed, and a pavilion was built on the bunker in the northeast corner, and in 1764 Friedrich II moved the Duke's court to Ludwig Lust.

Georg Adolf Dampler, architect, in 1837 when Mecklenburg moved the capital to Schwerin, the palace was in disrepair. In addition, the Duke felt that the buildings and outbuildings built in different styles from different periods were not suitable for the needs of his court. So Archduke Paul Friedrich decided to build a new palace in today's museum, the old garden at that time. But just a few months after the start of construction, the Grand Duke died, and his 19-year-old son and heir, Friedrich Franz II, decided not to continue the construction of the new palace, so the palace was stopped, and the new Grand Duke decided to renovate the historical buildings on the island.

At first, the Grand Duke wanted to renovate all the buildings, but at the persuasion of the architect Georges Adolf Dammler he decided to leave the four palaces of the 16th and 17th centuries facing the lake, and another request of the Duke was to make the road leading from the city to the palace more majestic to show his power.
