Chapter Ninety-One: Schools in New York

After Qi Yi returned to the United States after the Chinese New Year, the first thing he did was to help Yan Yun find school information.

There are three major art and design schools in New York, in addition to Pasons (Parsons) and FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) (State University of New York Fashion Institute of Technology), which Yan Yun and Qi also mentioned, and Pratt Institute (Pratt Institute). (Note 1)

At universities in New York, academic buildings are usually scattered all over the city, and there is not much traditional concept of "campus".

New York universities generally do not have campuses in the strict sense of the word, and the academic buildings are relatively scattered, and Pratt is the only East Coast art school in the United States with a traditional campus.

However, Pratt's advantage is that Yan Yun's undergraduate degree in architectural design and industrial design is still a little far from Pasons and FIT in terms of fashion.

Therefore, after Qi Yi's research, he did not have a more detailed understanding of Pratt.

Fashion is a very small circle, and if you check the information from the outside, you can't understand the real situation inside.

Qi Yi sent an email saying that he had made a very simple list and put it in the attachment of the email he wrote to Yan Yun.

A less in-depth comparison of Pasons and FIT.

After opening the attachment, Yan Yun has a new understanding of the word "simple".

Qi Yi's summary listed the contents of hundreds of articles.

From the more conventional, such as:

Parsons is a private school and FIT is a public school.

Tuition fees at Pasons are three times higher than at FIT.

The student population at Pasons is one-third of that of FIT.

Pasons is design-oriented, FIT is ready-to-wear.

Pasons is ranked highest for Fashion Design and FIT has a lot of courses in cutting and making.

Pasons is very commercial, and FIT has a more complete curriculum system.

to more academic, such as:

One of the special aspects of applying to Pasons is that you need to complete a 750-word Pasons Challenge. Choose a theme and create three works in any artistic medium around the theme. Each work needs to be accompanied by a 250-word explanatory essay, which can be less than more. (Note 2)

The special thing about applying for FIT is that you need to submit ready-to-wear, which is not available in all other FD (Fashion Design) majors in the United States.

FIT has a good museum exhibition hall, which has a lot of historical materials, fabrics and celebrity designs about clothing.

FIT has the world's richest art library, and the campus network can directly access GSN, the authoritative website of fashion trends.

to the more interesting ones, such as:

Pasons and FIT students pinch each other each year at the Fusion Fashion Sho, a competition between only two schools, but whoever wins the competition is New York's Fashion College of the Year.

and then Yan Yun is more interested, such as:

Pasons' famous alumni, in addition to Marc Jacobs, who Yan Yun originally particularly admired, made LV young and helped LV open up the clothing design market, as well as New York's most popular and youngest Chinese designer Alexander Ang (Chinese name Wang Daren), Tom Ford, who single-handedly created the YSL golden age and brought Gucci out of the trough, and Reed, the chief designer of COACH who comes to Pasons from time to time to give lectures Krakoff。

Notable alumni of FIT include Calvin Klein, who specializes in minimalist style, and Michael Kors (Note 3)

Both Pasons and FIT have strong alumni cultures, with Pasons having easy access to Marc Jacobs internships and FIT people being given priority admission by Calvin Klein.

Finally, what Yan Yun cares about is very important, such as:

The cafeteria at Pasons is a bit better than at FIT.

Qi Yi's "very simple" list listed at least 500 small items, and even if Yan Yun just looked at it, it took him several hours to read it.

Qi Yi said before that he would help Yan Yun find information more seriously than he applied for the school, which is really not an exaggeration at all.

Yan Yun is only coming for half a year to study, but Qi Yi has listed all the requirements for applying from undergraduate to master's degree, and the level of detail is staggering.

Just for Qi Yi's list, Yan Yun must also go to New York to complete his last studies.

After the field trip, Yan Yun had a deeper understanding of the meaning of Qi Yilie's Pasons being very commercial.

This is evident in Pasons' long list of notable alumni.

Commercialization is a double-edged sword for design.

In a place like New York, if a designer makes clothes that don't sell well for a season, it is very likely to be eliminated directly, and the reality of the living environment is extremely cruel, so there is no future at all if it is not commercialized.

But if a designer is completely led by the market, he will lose a lot of imagination, and Pasons's over-commercialization is often disdained by many fashion schools that flaunt the design itself.

Pasons are a bit more famous than FIT, but the high tuition fees of Pasons as a private school are prohibitive for many.

So, from an application point of view, Pasons is a little easier than FIT.

In terms of the number of applicants, the competition is not as fierce.

Compared with FIT, commercialization has also allowed Pasons to have a more mature refresher course system.

Saying that Pasons is easier to apply to is relative to other design majors.

From a fashion point of view, Pasons' Master of Fashion Design will only admit a maximum of two or three Chinese students each year, which can be difficult to apply.

Yan Yun didn't want to go to New York to get a degree, and the difficulty of studying was actually not as difficult as Yan Yun imagined.

Like Pasons' Summer School for high school students, it's on a first-come, first-served basis.

After Yan Yun woke up in the evening, she went to FIT first according to the route Qi Yi drew for her last night.

FIT is near the Empire State Building, and the hotel where Yan Yun stayed is not too far away, so it is easy to find.

After Yan Yun came out of the FIT, he went to the teaching area of the fashion major in Pasons.

Pasons' main campus is in Greenich Village, New York, but the fashion-professional clothing district is also in the heart of Manhattan.

Pasons' Fashion Building is a very designed building on Fifth Avenue in New York, just off Union Square, a five-minute walk from New York University.

…………………………

Note 1:

FIT is actually more often translated as the New York Fashion Institute in China, but the founders of FIT chose the word "Institute of Technology" when choosing the name, hoping to make FIT a design school like MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Note 2:

For a long time, the questions in the Pasons Challenge were self-selected and three 250 explanations.

In 2016, I changed to choosing a work in my portfolio and creating a new visual design work for my choice, with a 500-word design idea.

The word count is less, but it's actually a bit more difficult.

Note 3:

There are many Calvin Klein (CK, Calvin Klein) stores in China, but they are all underwear and jeans, and they don't make people feel very fashionable.

In fact, the main stores in China are CKJ (Calvin Klein Jeans, CK denim), which is the cheapest series in CK.

CK has two other main lines, Calvin Klein Collection (haute couture) and CK Calvin Klein (haute couture), and CK's position in the perfume industry should not be underestimated.
