About the custom of the upper beam - applause
Shangliang can be said to be very knowledgeable.
According to historical records, the ceremony of building houses in China began in the Wei and Jin dynasties, and has been popularized throughout the country in the Ming and Qing dynasties. China has been known as the country of etiquette since ancient times, and everything pays attention to etiquette. Building a house is a major event in production and life, and various rituals are of course indispensable. The etiquette in building a house is actually a blessing ceremony.
The purpose of these rituals is to pray for the perpetuation of the house and the fulfillment of life.
The procedure of private housing construction generally includes several steps, such as site selection, erection of central columns, upper beams, and completion of the door. Among them, the "upper beam" is regarded as the most important step in the process of building a house. The beam is the spanning member that is erected on the column in the building, and it is the most important part of the timber member on the upper frame. Folks believe that whether the upper beam is smooth or not is not only related to whether the structure of the house is solid, but also related to whether the occupants will prosper in the future. In the past, there was a saying in the countryside: "There are beams on the roof, there is grain at home, there are no beams on the roof, and the six animals are not prosperous." It can be seen that the importance of the beam in the minds of the people, so every time the "beam" has to hold a grand ceremony. The entire beam ceremony can be said to be carried out around the "main beam".
Before putting on the beam, it is necessary to carefully select the beam and make the beam. After the beams are made, the owner chooses the auspicious day and the beam. According to traditional customs, Shangliang can not clash with any one of the owner's family on this day, otherwise it will have adverse effects. In addition, other people's zodiac signs should also be avoided if they clash with the hour of the upper beam.
Although the customs vary from place to place, the ceremony of putting on the beam is very grand, and the whole process can be divided into several procedures such as "sacrificing the beam, putting the beam, receiving the package, throwing the beam, and waiting for the craftsman".
It is an indispensable procedure to sacrifice the beam before the upper beam. Pigs, fish, chickens, geese, eggs, tofu, incense and candles are placed on the offering table, and masons and carpenters say good things while toasting.
After the sacrifice is completed, the main beam is lifted up to the roof by a craftsman or pulled up with a rope. When lifting the beam or pulling the beam, the firecrackers sound in unison, and the master of the upper beam wants to sing the song of the beam, shouting "Shang! Great luck!" In the process of putting up the beam, some places require that after the beam is stable, the owner should move the "grain color bag" sent by relatives and friends to the roof, put it in the middle of the beam, and drape the red cloth on the beam, implying a bumper harvest of grains. In some places, a pair of cloth insoles are sewn on the bottom of the red cloth, which means to lay the foundation for the new owner. In some places, red cloth bags containing red dates, peanuts, rice, wheat, and evergreen are hung in the middle of the main beam, which means "blessing, luck, longevity, happiness, and eternal green." After that, the craftsman wraps the fruits and food in a red cloth, and throws the cloth bag into a basket held by the owner's hands while saying good things, a procedure called "receiving the bag", which means to catch the treasure. The most lively procedure of the beam ceremony is the "beam throwing". When the master "takes the bag", the craftsman will throw the candy, peanuts, steamed buns, copper coins, "gold ingots" and so on from the beam to the surroundings, so that the men, women and children who come to see the excitement scramble, the more people the more happy the master, this move is called "throwing the beam", which means "the wealth is rolling in". When "throwing the beam", the craftsman also has to say auspicious words, they often say: "Throw the beam to the east, the east sunrise is full of red; throw the beam to the west, the unicorn sends the son to hang double happiness; throw the beam to the south, the descendants will be the champion; throw the beam to the north, hoard white rice at the end of the year." After the beam throwing, everyone exits the new house and lets the sun bask in the beams, which is called "drying beams". At the end of the day, the host held a banquet to entertain the craftsmen, helpers, relatives and friends, and distributed red envelopes, and the whole ceremony ended.
Nowadays, even if there is an occasional ceremony to raise the beam, children are watching from afar, and the scene is mostly deserted. Maybe people's living standards have improved, the pace of life has accelerated, and they don't care about those sweets, and they don't have the heart to join in the excitement. Perhaps, only the owner knows that what they throw is not candy, but loneliness......
