To go deeper, we have to start with the development of liquid crystal technology.

The main reason for the problem of service life and reliability is that when a DC voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, the liquid crystal material and electrode will undergo a redox reaction and deteriorate. Although AC power can also be used to drive the LCD, the display performance is poor. It was Sharp that finally solved the problem.

In May 1973, Sharp Company launched the world's first liquid crystal application product, EL-805, a small calculator that uses a liquid crystal display as a display component, by adding ionic impurities to liquid crystal materials to increase their conductivity and obtain good display characteristics by using AC drives.

The liquid crystal display used in Sharp's liquid crystal calculator is a DSM (dynamic scattering mode) liquid crystal produced by RCA Corporation, instead of the current TN (twisted nematic) mode liquid crystal.

However, it is difficult to manufacture LCD TVs with DSM because of the limitations of the number of dot matrix display scan lines of DSM.

The TN model, which emerged in 1971, solved this problem. TN liquid crystals act as shutters, and by moving liquid crystal molecules in an electric field, light can be turned on/off.

At present, almost all LCD screens are using this working principle.

Although the number of scan lines displayed in the dot matrix can be greatly increased in TN mode, the image is distorted when the number of scan lines increases to about 60.

For this problem, it was Hitachi who initially found out the cause and proposed a solution. Hitachi engineers found that the maximum number of scan lines depends on the rising edge of the voltage-transmittance curve.

As a result, organizations began to compete on how to increase the rising edge of the voltage-transmittance curve. This was followed by the STN (Super Twisted Nematic) mode, which increased the twist angle of the liquid crystal from 90 degrees in TN mode to 270 degrees.

In 1982, the Royal Signal and Radar Research Institute (RSRE) invented the STN liquid crystal. In 1985, the Swiss company Brown Boveri (BBC) trial-produced an STN LCD screen with 135 scanning lines.

However, even with the introduction of the STN mode, it is still difficult to make LCD TVs, because STN LCD still has the problem of low contrast and difficult to display fine gray scales.

Breaking through this barrier is the active matrix drive technology that controls each pixel through TFT (thin film field-effect transistor).

Unlike conventional pure matrix drivers, active matrix drivers can control each pixel independently, thus preventing intermodulation distortion due to the influence of surrounding pixels, so that high contrast and fine gray scales can be displayed.

In order to manufacture large-size displays and corresponding TFT LCD TVs, it is necessary to form silicon film technology and color display technology on a large-area glass substrate.

In fact, at that time, amorphous silicon (a-Si), which was developed for solar cells, was already commercialized in terms of silicon film formation technology.

At that time, it was fashionable to say that the oil crisis would lead to an energy crisis, so solar cells were attracting attention as energy cells, and the development of amorphous silicon was very active.

After the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom announced the trial production of amorphous silicon TFT in 1979, companies and research institutions in Europe have released the development results of amorphous silicon TFT driver displays.

In terms of color display technology, Ryuo Uchida of Tohoku University released the juxtaposition addition color mixing method in 1981, which realizes color display through orderly arrangement of three-color filters, that is, color filter method.

Driven by these developments, in 1986, the 3-inch amorphous TFT color LCD TV was launched, and in 1988, the industry began to develop an amorphous TFT color LCD display for 14-inch TVs. In particular, the 14-inch LCD screen launched by Sharp has actually verified the possibility of realizing a large-screen amorphous silicon TFT LCD screen, which has caused many manufacturers to invest in it.

At this time, TFT LCD has begun to move towards the "dream wall-mounted TV", but its comprehensive application started from the color display of the PC.

In 1988, 10.4-inch TFT LCD screens for PC products of IBM and Toshiba appeared.

At present, that is, in 1990, the first generation of 320mm×400mm substrate production line is under construction, and it is expected to be put into operation next year.

Sharp cut four 8.4-inch panels on this first-generation substrate. And it is the large-scale substrate that promotes the development of the liquid crystal industry.

Having said all this, if you say more vividly, in fact, (S)TN-LCD display technology and the corresponding screen are the kind of screen that we commonly used when we were children for digital display of electronic watches, which can only display two color levels, black and white;

Although plasma display technology has also made great progress, it is still unable to resist the dominance of TFT-LCD thin film display technology head-on due to cost issues.

At this time, the mass production of liquid crystal display technology is on the way...... According to the memory in his mind and the introduction of Tomoki Kashima just now, Yu Zixian further confirmed that the current mass production process of TFT-LCD thin film liquid crystal display has been opened, but it will not be put into production until next year, and there will be many process defects at that time, which will inevitably lead to surprisingly low yields......

In my memory, it will not be until 95 years from now that the yield of TFT–LCD screens in mass production will be greatly improved......

The tortuous development of liquid crystal technology has further strengthened the correctness of persuading Luo Shouwu to retreat to the development of TN display technology.

However, at present, if we want to successfully introduce TN display technology and production line, we must convince Tomoki Kashima in front of us.
