Chapter 5: Assemblies
Walking through the majestic sanctuary with the cyan stone bricks, Todd was finally able to see the world with his own eyes once again.
The long nave is topped by a cylindrical vault of stone, high side windows on both sides of the roof, floors and walls in alternating shades of marble, metal grilles, carved stone screens, choir seats, woodcuts of the pulpit, and sculptures of the Holy Spirit. Spun around and looked at everything around him, Todd was amazed. In his previous life, he never imagined that he would one day be able to travel to such a medieval world.
A gray-robed monk walked past the boy and gave him a strange look.
Looking through the wide robes, Todd saw the blood and organs in their chests. As the monks looked at their leader, Huggins, their hearts beat faster and their steps became hurried.
Nervousness? Fear?
Returning his gaze to the man in front of him, Todd noticed that Huggins had a standard Slavic face, with a long head, a high forehead, low cheekbones, thin lips, a slightly raised chin, a tall and emaciated figure, a pale face, and a neatly combed goatee tied into pigtails.
But after a few days of getting along, Todd felt more and more that this man really couldn't find anything to be afraid of. His appearance is only a façade, Huggins is calm and thoughtful, but he has a cheerful personality and loves to sing. There's only one place that makes people care a little bit.
From the first time they met, Huggins wore a pair of leather gloves that he had never seen taken off during the trip.
Maybe it's a wound on his hand, maybe it's just habit......
It took more than an hour to walk around, and Todd gradually learned about the place and era he was in through the introduction of the man along the way.
From the perspective of the degree of civilization development, the level of science and technology and culture in the world to which he traveled is similar to that of medieval Europe in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
Geographically, according to the work of navigators and cartographers, the whole world was divided into a continent and several islands. The northern tip of the continent is covered with ice and snow all year round, and the rest of the land is divided into several terrain areas by three horizontal and two vertical mountain ranges, two large and three small lakes. The archipelago region in the northwest, the plains in the Midwest and Southwest, the highlands and snowfields in the northeast, the desert region in the east, and the grassland region in the southeast.
In terms of national distribution and religious regions, the central and western regions are made up of papal and secular states, which believe in the Church of the Father. Todd's place is the Monastery of San Sidro next to the Kingdom of the Silver Ring in the western waterfront.
Speaking of the Monastery of San Cidro, this building with a history of nearly 100 years is a landmark building in the Moon Creek Plain. In 1031 A.D., the Kingdom of the Silver Ring built the prototype of this monastery in honor of the ascetics of Sidlo. At the beginning of its construction, it was only a small monks' gathering place with only three buildings: a liturgical hall, a holy church, and a rest house, but after nearly 100 years of renovation and expansion, the monastery of San Sidro expanded to become a well-known religious site in the southwestern countries.
Hundreds of monks gather here, adhering to hermit-like monasticism, yearning for inner peace and piety.
That's what Huggins said to him.
But as the tour of the abbey's basement deepened, Todd became more and more skeptical of this claim.
The dark and long corridors, the flickering and eerie torches, the damp and dark floors.
If it weren't for the bright and sacred place that he had just walked through, no one could have imagined that it was like a passage through the catacombs, which happened to be built under the monastery.
The two of them reached the end of the corridor, and a gate with a metallic sheen appeared in front of them.
These four sentences are engraved on the door.
"As it is;"
"As it is;"
"As it is;"
"As it is. β
Who came up with such funny four sentences?!
With a head full of question marks, Todd followed the tall man into a chapel underground.
The statue of the Father stands high above the underground nave, and although it looks the same as in the sanctuary, the dim light of the fire always gives the boy a different illusion.
Master Myris stood on a high pulpit, his clothes looking much more formal than before. He wore a characteristic flared-sleeved robe with an inverted triangular pointed neckline, several guipure stripes on the garment and brim, and sewn with gold and silver threads.
Underneath him, there were several benches, on which three men and one woman sat upright.
The moment Todd walked into the lobby, all eyes were on him.
Some boys, who were nervous and didn't know how to deal with themselves, were pushed by the people behind them. When I looked back, I saw Huggins's big smile of encouragement and approval.
Under the gaze of everyone, Todd walked up to Master Myris, looking at the old man's warm smiling face, he always had the feeling of straying into a pyramid scheme.
"Today, we are gathered here to witness the addition of a new member. β
"This child, born into a peasant family and without any church education, has untied the 'box of proverbs'......"
Someone in the audience made a surprised noise.
Master Myris looked at the audience's expressions with a little bad taste, and after the mood calmed down a little, he indifferently threw out a bigger news: "He came into contact with the Sutherland Relic......"
"Oh my God!"
"What?!"
Several people let out loud exclamations, and some kicked down the bench beneath them.
The old man raised his eyebrows, seemingly satisfied with the reaction of the crowd: "I announce that as a xenomorph, he is now officially a member of our family. β
Waving to the boy, Master Myris motioned for Todd to follow him into the crowd below.
The old man palms up, drew a half arc towards the men and women in front of him, and finally pointed to himself and said to Todd: "Child, as far as you can see, we are all aliens. What is a heterogene? Unlike ordinary people, we have more or less abilities that ordinary people do not have. This is God's blessing and favor on us, but there are people in the world who are afraid because of ignorance, and because of fear, they hate us, and call us "the aftermath of the devil" and want to get rid of them as soon as possible. Therefore, xenomorphs can only protect themselves if they condense into a family and hide their abilities...... Come to me, and I'll introduce you to your family......"
The two of them stopped in front of a middle-aged man and woman who were bent down to salute, and Master Myris said, "This is the Raglan couple, who run a bakery in the town and are also in charge of the monastery's trade and food supply. β
Looking at the middle-aged couple in front of them, about forty years old, short and fat, and kind-eyed, Todd also bowed down according to each other's appearance. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Raglan took advantage of his lack of attention and pinched the boy's cheek directly, and looked at his teeth curiously.
"They say that even the bones of those who come into contact with relics will turn into gold......"
Listening to his wife's brainless words, Mr. Raglan quickly opened her hand and hurriedly said sorry to the boy.
Master Myris rolled his eyes and led his followers to a tall, lanky man with a smile on his face.
Watching the other man stand up from his seat, Todd tilted his head and opened his mouth wide in surprise.
Huggins was already tall in his mind, but compared to this tall, thin man who looked like a bamboo pole, he became a veritable short.
Oh my God, one meter eight? No, I'm afraid it's going to be closer to two meters.
"This is little Jerry, who just celebrated his eighteenth birthday the day before yesterday, and is a pious and kind child. β
Hearing the old man's introduction, Todd was surprised again.
If you can grow like this at the age of eighteen, then if it takes a few years, won't it grow to the sky?!
And, listen to the name, little Jerry...... It always reminds people of the omnipotent little mouse in "Cat and Mouse", and this contrast is too great.
"That's Edgar ......"
Todd looked at the lonely figure of a thin boy in the corner of the lobby, and his cold gaze looked a little uncomfortable.
"He is our messenger and our liaison. Master Myris looked around the hall and asked, "What about Marcos and the Black Sheep?"
Mrs. Raglan approached Todd, who dodged her outstretched fat hand, and the woman replied respectfully, "Marcos has gone to the Watch Fort in the east, and there is no news of him yet." β
Edgar coldly dropped a sentence: "'Black Sheep' follows the circus to the next city to perform." Before leaving, she said that it made her feel more at ease there than the boring days here at the monastery. With that, he turned and disappeared into the aisle.
Hearing the melancholy sigh of the old man beside him, Todd suddenly felt that the brainwashing work of the MLM organization he joined was not ordinarily bad......
