Chapter 30: Christmas
As the time came to mid-December, snow began to fall in the skies, and Hogwarts was soon covered in snow.
The weather in the Scottish Highlands is unpredictable, rainy and snowy.
Growing up in the southern port city of Southampton, Jon was clearly not used to the cold weather of having to wear several heavy sweaters every day.
But fortunately, the semester is coming to an end, and they will have more than half a month of vacation.
The students were almost scrambling to book seats on the Hogwarts Express, hoping to go home for Christmas.
Jon was quite curious about this, isn't Christmas a Christian holiday? The "witch hunt" of the Christian church in the Middle Ages, I don't know how many witches and wizards were killed, and the two sides were almost in a sea of blood...... Wizards even come to commemorate the birth of the Son of Christ?
In his final class, A History of Magic, he posed this question to Professor Binns:
"Professor, why do wizards celebrate Christmas?"
Hearing this, Professor Binns blinked, and said in his dry, breathless voice:
"Christmas is a day that even Muggles celebrate, but we wizards definitely started celebrating it before they did...... As early as the 14th century B.C., the Mitanni sorcerers of Asia Minor had a history of celebrating the god Mithras on December 25!"
"In ancient languages such as Sanskrit or Avestan, 'mitra-' means 'contract' or 'companion'...... Mithra, the god of contracts, according to legend, was born on December 25th, which is what Christmas means to us shamans. ”
"For wizards, the existence of the 'contract' is an important reason why magic has begun to make great progress. Our ancestors made a pact with the elemental elves, which was the beginning of our magical abilities, the wand also made a pact with wizards, allowing them to effectively control their magic, and we also made a pact with elves, centaurs and even Muggles to ensure that we did not have to live in danger......"
As he spoke, Professor Binns let out a violent cough like the sound of chalk breaking.
"Because contracts are so important to magic...... Therefore, the wizards spontaneously celebrate the birth of Mithras on December 25 every year, which is the beginning of 'Christmas'...... The Muggles celebrate this holiday because of our influence, and their Son was not born on December 25, but in the fall, and their legends are confused with the history of wizards. ”
However, the Christmas custom of wizards giving gifts originated from Muggles, and wizards found it so interesting that they gradually adopted it...... Any questions, Mr. Hart?"
"No, thank you, Professor!"
Jon sat back in his seat, and Professor Binns reopened the handout:
"Let's move on to the weirdo Yuric, who was born in the Middle Ages after 982 and was a notoriously eccentric wizard......"
......
With the end of the last Potions lesson, the Christmas holidays begin.
A school year at Hogwarts is divided into three semesters, the first semester from the beginning of the school year to the end of the Christmas holidays, the second term after the return of the Christmas holidays until the Easter holidays, and the third term after the return of the Easter holidays until the end of the semester. Between each semester, there is a half-month vacation, and before each academic year, there is a summer vacation of more than two months.
Jon boarded the Hogwarts Express to London, sat in a booth with Zacharis Smith and Eloise Midgan, and listened to Zacharis blow bulls for hours.
At dusk, when Jon got off the train, he caught his first glimpse of Eric and Judy waiting at King's Cross Station.
"Long time no see, Mommy ......" he whispered as Judy took him into her arms at once, "Merry Christmas!"
"Yes...... My dear...... Merry Christmas ......"
......
Christmas at 86 Eastleigh Road was no different than usual.
It was as if there wasn't a wizard in the family, and in fact it was pretty much the same, after all, Jon couldn't use magic here now.
Eric had already bought a pine tree and dressed it up with lights, ornaments, and Christmas stockings, while Judy had prepared a variety of dishes, including a ten-pound baked buddy, trunk cake, and gingerbread......
Jon, like a normal child, eats and drinks at home and falls asleep.
When he woke up the next morning, the first thing he saw was a small pile of packages at the foot of his bed.
Gifts, lots and lots of gifts......
Eric's gift to him was an expensive Cartier watch with the name "Jon Hart" written on the right side of the watch.
Judy's gift was a black coat that looked like she had designed herself to fit in perfectly with Jon's figure, and it looked pretty good on the body, and it didn't look different from the wizard's robes.
As for the other gifts......
Zacharith gave him a copy of Quidditch Tracing the Origins, which Jon just glanced at and tossed aside.
Astoria's gift was a box of chocolate frogs and Bibi beans.
Professor Sprout actually sent him a specimen of the cystic weed.
As for the large package, Jon bent down and carefully opened it, revealing a delicate piece of chocolate cake.
This is the Christmas present from the house-elves in the kitchen.
Jon tasted it, and it tasted great.
Then, after putting away the gifts one by one, he walked out of the room.
......
Arriving at the courtyard, he saw Eric shoveling snow over there.
Jon thought about it for a moment and walked over.
"What's the matter, son?" Eric couldn't help but ask, looking at Jon, who hadn't spoken for a long time.
"That...... Eric...... Daddy......" Jon said with a stumbling "Can you give me some money?"
"Money?" Eric blinked, "Didn't you say our currency can't be used in your world?"
"Yes......" Jon nodded, "But I want to buy something else!"
"Okay, how much do you want?"
"Uh!" Jon thought seriously for a moment, "Thirty thousand pounds, almost!"
