"Pulling pollen" can be said to be a pioneering technical farm work in the history of rice cultivation.

Rice is a self-pollinating crop, and the pollination of conventional rice ends when it blooms. The female parent of hybrid rice, Zhenshan 97 sterile line, is bred by wild rice, which blooms early and harvests early. However, it has a characteristic that is different from ordinary cultivated rice, that is, the flower column is exposed after harvesting.

The paternal parent International 661 was selected from rice varieties introduced to India, and the anthers were hypertrophied and pollen, but the flowering time was later than the mother's.

Based on this characteristic, although the flowering period of the parents meets, the flowering time of the parents does not coincide completely during the day. In order to make up for this shortcoming, when the male parent blooms, if the wind is small, the pollen shake degree is low, and the spread range is small, the rice plant can be gently beaten with a bamboo pole with artificial assistance. When the rice plant is vibrated by external force, the pollen will immediately flutter and fly, which can greatly improve the pollen dispersal range and increase the pollination probability of the female parent. Pulling pollen is actually quite simple.

The tool used is a nylon rope that is thicker than twine. The surface of the nylon rope is smooth and oily, and it is easy to slide over the head of the rice ear with small thorns. In less than a week, the female parent is basically full of ears. That is, the pollination has ended, and although the third phase of the paternal parent has just started to raise flowers, it is also useless pollen, so the pollen pulling has stopped.

After the pollen is pulled, the paddy field enters the normal period of irrigation and seeding, and the overall situation has been decided, and it is only a month later to start harvesting. Apart from keeping the rice fields properly irrigated, kept them moist, and controlling pests and diseases, there is little farm work in the fields. During this time, at least two weeks, the breeding team is relatively leisurely.
