Chapter 9: Abstinence
Around 6 p.m.
After a hurried dinner, and thanking Master Myris for his generosity, Todd took a few blank pieces of paper, a set of rulers, a few charcoals, and half a candle from the classroom, buried himself in his room, and began the work he had done best in his previous life.
Design of chemical experiments and practical industrial applications.
In the afternoon, by observing the waste residue of silver ore refining and consulting with the craftsman Aiden, Todd already had a certain plan for the next work.
Although the "ash blowing method of silver smelting" was used to mine and smelt silver ore in the "North Quarry Field", because the understanding of mineral elements and chemical reactions of the royal craftsmen was still in the initial stage, only about 60% to 70% of the silver in the ore was extracted, and about 30% of the silver was still lost in the waste residue, which was sent to the Monastery of San Sidro as garbage.
Why is there such attrition?
This is mainly due to three chemicals: bismuth (Bi, atomic number 83), tellurium (Te, atomic number 52), and lead oxide (PbO).
Bismuth can form eutectic with silver containing 97.5% low melting point (262 °C), and can also form a solid melt containing 5% bismuth with silver, bismuth has been copolymerized with silver in the lead liquid during the ash blowing process, after the end of the first stage of ash blowing, only the extension of the second stage can extract the silver liquid, and oxidize the bismuth into bismuth trioxide into the slag.
As for tellurium, because it has a great affinity with silver and gold, it is not easy to be oxidized and precipitated during the ash blowing process. In order to remove tellurium, in Europe in the late 16th century, it was common to add lead-rich lead to the molten pool after removing bismuth to reduce the concentration of tellurium before continuing ash blowing. That is to say, the extension of the third stage is carried out, and after two clean lead ash blows, about one-third of the tellurium can be oxidized and volatilized, two-thirds of the tellurium oxidized into the slag, and the residual trace tellurium is left in the silver solution.
And the last lead oxide. PbO solution can also dissolve a small amount of silver (according to the "Colmeier experiment", PbO can dissolve 3%~6% of silver) and silver oxide (silver oxide is unstable and completely dissociates at 150°C). However, it becomes quite stable when alloyed with PbO), thus reducing the recovery of silver. However, in the extended work of the second and third stages, silver can be further extracted to reduce the losses caused by lead oxide.
That's about how it works.
The key is how to rely on the equipment and materials available at hand to carry out the secondary and tertiary re-refining of silver ore residue.
Don't think about the electric furnace ash blowing method in the early 19th century.
The roulette method of the late 17th and early 18th centuries could not be done at all.
Even the mid-16th-century tall ash blowing furnace is difficult to achieve under today's conditions.
In comparison, only the early clad ash blowing furnaces of the late 13th and early 14th centuries can barely be reproduced.
While recalling the shape of the furnace in his mind, he used charcoal and a ruler to trace the refining process and the improvement of the utensils on the white paper.
Todd, who was obsessed with scientific work, quickly forgot the passage of time.
In the end, the candle that burned to the end reminded him of the time of his work.
Looking at the drawings that were only half completed in the dark, Todd held his forehead depressedly, this feeling of being forced to stop halfway through the work was the most unbearable for him.
Through the bricks and tiles overhead, he looked at the bright moon hanging high in the sky, sighed, and had no choice but to climb into bed and choose to sleep.
Early the next morning.
The robin's waist bell became the last thing he wanted to hear.
But he also knew very well that if he delayed the morning class, it would not only cause unnecessary suspicion from others, but even cause him to be unable to continue to stay here.
Pulling himself up, he put on his monk's robe, rubbed his sore eyes, and Todd carefully folded the drawings on the table and placed them under the bed. Although the annotations on the drawings are in Chinese, and no one has ever seen chemical elements and equations, it is better to be cautious about this kind of thing.
Hiding in a corner, yawning, and following the crowd through the morning class, the boy hurried to Master Myris's to learn a new lesson.
Grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, and geometry were acceptable to him, but music and astronomy were what really killed him.
The music is relatively better, firstly, he can't, and secondly, he is not interested, and the class is perfunctory.
Astronomy is the biggest problem.
Let a soul who has been baptized by modern civilization accept the education of astronomy in the Church, let alone a teacher with a scientific background.
In his head, he was clearly shouting nonsense and nonsense, and he was shouting that it was like this, and that he was being taught.
In the lecture hall, perhaps seeing that Todd was not in high spirits and was not in good spirits, Master Myris rarely interrupted the class and talked to the apprentice opposite.
"You're the most gifted student I've ever met. ”
Hearing that the old man sitting opposite him came up and put on a "high hat" for himself, Todd chuckled in his heart and secretly said that it was not good, and put on a deaf look.
There is no doubt that Heavenly Father has blessed and blessed you. If you calm down and concentrate on your practice, you may become the first of us to come close to a sage. ”
The boy still hung his head, vaguely feeling that the hat on his head was about to pierce the roof and point to the sky.
"But ......"
Pouting, Todd touched the bridge of his nose with his fingers, and secretly thought, sure enough, there is a but.
"Don't spend your time and energy on those trails. ”
Edgar, you big mouth!
Todd thought to himself: I guessed that when I talked about these brainless topics today, it must be Edgar, a bastard, who reported yesterday's events to Master Myris.
There were also some boys who did not give up, raised their heads and persuaded the old man tentatively: "Master, if I have a way, I can improve everyone's life a little, can't I help everyone better understand the true meaning of the Holy Dao?"
"No, my child, that's not true!"
It was the first time that Master Myris's face had such a serious look on his face, and he had only heard him say: "The idea of wanting to improve our lives is nothing but an excuse for laziness and sinking, and a comfortable life will wear down our will, dull our minds, and empty our bodies." A monk who is truly committed to the Holy Path should abandon all distractions and all mundane things and dedicate his whole life to the Father!"
The corner of his eye twitched, and the apprentice had the heart to argue again, but after thinking about it, he understood that this was definitely not a good idea. He hurriedly buried his head and closed his eyes so that the old man would not see his questioning and disconvinced expression.
After a long time, Todd forced a sentence out of his throat.
"Obey the Master's instructions. ”
——————————————————
After finishing his morning studies, Todd walked out of the lecture hall and felt that the world was dark.
Obviously, there is a way to eat fine food, put on brand new clothes, and there is no need to get up early and work and run around every day, so you can devote more energy and time to research and academics.
Why refuse such a life?
He couldn't understand it.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a figure appearing in the corner of the wall.
Seeing clearly who it was, Todd suddenly became angry, took off his shoes and ran away with them in his hands, and scolded and swore in his mouth: "Edgar, you little bastard!
Following the fleeing figure in front of him, through several corridors, and around a few corners, Todd crashed headfirst into a man's arms.
Huggins, who had been waiting for a long time, dragged the grimacing Edgar behind him and said to Todd, "I heard you have a way to make us eat meat every day?"
