Chapter 114: The Picture Quality of the Movie

"Three months, very good!" Li Fangcheng was overjoyed.

"The problem now is the problem of revisions and the presentation of the image quality, as long as the number of revisions increases, the time must be sung, and the higher the picture quality, the longer the production time. Chris voiced two concerns.

"The question of picture quality, I hope you can all remember this, the picture quality produced in the Age of Miracles will always reach the top image quality that we can achieve at the moment! Using the highest image quality to produce and produce, this requirement is the most basic iron law!" Li Fangcheng said to the two of them with great seriousness.

"If it's the highest at the moment, it's almost impossible to show it in theaters. It's ......," Chris said with some hesitation.

"Can't play it?" Li Fangcheng frowned.

Before Chris could explain, Li Fangcheng remembered! This was 1988! Not an era when IMAX theaters were all over 40 years later!

Although it is said that the clarity of the movies that can be played in this era has even reached the level of IMAX.

But that doesn't mean it's available in cinemas!

The first IMAX movie in history was shown at the Fuji Exhibition Center in Japan in 1970, and when it first came out, it caused a sensation, and although the first screen was only 17 minutes long, it gave a glimpse of the power of IMAX.

The first full-fledged IMAX projection equipment was installed at the Ontario Amphitheater in Toronto in 1971.

At the 1974 Washington State World's Fair, the United States Pavilion exhibited a giant IMAX screen measuring 27.3 x 19.7 meters, which filled the entire field of vision when the audience looked straight ahead.

During this exhibition, a total of 5 million people watched it, and the vast majority of the audience thought that it showed a strong sense of movement, and even a small number of people experienced a phenomenon similar to seasickness.

Two years ago, at the Canadian Exhibition Hall in Vancouver, IMAX presented IMAX 3D cinematic effects for the first time with The IMAX Experience technology.

If you follow the best production method now, you can already make IMAX movie quality, but there is no movie theater that can play IMAX 3D movies at all!

This technology has not yet been perfected, and most of them are still used in the planetarium science and technology museum, and the general broadcast is usually only about 40 minutes at most.

In this era, what movie theaters can generally do, the more top-level is only 2K picture quality, and 4K will hardly appear in this era.

The cost of making the screen and the cost of shooting the film, these two costs are ridiculously high before the technology is fully perfected.

First of all, it needs to be clarified that there is no single size of motion picture film, there are roughly 8 types: 8.75mm, 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, 65mm, and 70mm. This refers to the width, the long and short sides of the motion picture film and the photo film are reversed, this width, that is, when we see the screen, the length of the entire screen is determined according to the film at the time of shooting.

A 4K movie with a resolution of 4096×2160 actually has only 8 million pixels. According to the resolution of the photographic film, if it is well preserved, a 16mm film can already be made in 4K. Factoring in the loss and the resolution of the dynamic film, 35mm of rubber is more than enough to convert to 4K resolution. Not to mention 65mm and 70mm (IMAX) films, which are already difficult to convert to digital pixels for the next 30 years. If converted to digital resolution, 65mm film can be converted to 6k-8k resolution, or even higher, while 70mm, no one knows where the limit is.

Many people will wonder why movies shot in the 80s and even in the 60s, even decades later, can even have ultra-clear versions, which are actually rubber movies in the past.

If you really follow the current top-notch production method, don't consider the issue of screening.

The best production at the moment is IMAX 3D, which has an image size of 69.6 mm × 48.5 mm compared to the traditional 70mm film image size of 48.5 mm × 22.1 mm.

As a result, the light sensitivity area of each frame of IMAX film is 10 times that of ordinary 35mm film, and 3 times that of traditional 70mm film. This also makes the images projected on the giant screen clearer and brighter than ordinary movies.

So if you shoot with IAMX, the clarity is definitely higher than everyone imagined!

And even after 40 years, there are very few people who can see this picture quality.

Not to mention the rubber shooting of IMAX 3D.

In the film industry, some people even call digital IMAX 3D pseudo-3D, and real 3D is the projection technology of IMAX stereoscopic films, IMAX3D uses two reels of IMAX special 70mm film, one disc of film corresponds to one eye, and uses polarization filter glasses (passive) or infrared synchronization system (active) with electronic glasses to provide two separate images. Combined with the IMAX giant screen, IMAX3D is able to produce a realistic full-field stereoscopic effect.

In the early 10s of the 21st century, there were no more than two screens that could play the IMAX 3D version of 70mm film.

The terrible thing about this picture quality is that what you see in front of you is real!

As if you were in the field, the size of a screen can even exceed 500 square meters!

But why is there almost no one who shoots in this way, one is that movie theaters are worried about the cost, and a screen that shows IMAX starts at more than $10 million, and the survival cycle is only 3 to 5 years.

It is equivalent to spending an average of $2.5 million a year to maintain a screen, which is such a high cost, and few theaters dare to try.

The second is the preservation of film, once the IMAX shooting method is used, when playing, because the film is too heavy, a specific crane is required to install and project, and every second, the film has to take away 1.7 meters in length, and after watching a movie, at least a roll of film with a length of 10,000 meters! and IMAX 3D is also equivalent to more than 20,000 meters of film.

This is an extremely terrible thing, a careless, scratch will become an indelible damage.

So why are Huaxia movies also filmed, and rice movies are also filmed, but there are obvious differences in picture quality?

In fact, one reason is the size of the film, the larger the size, the clearer, and the other problem, which is the problem of film negatives and copies.

Cinema negatives refer to the original negatives of films, which are the original versions of the film screens and are not used for cinema screening.

The cinema shows a feature film, also known as a copy film, and the picture quality, color saturation, and tolerance of the original negative must be several times that of the film copy. So why not show it in a movie theater? It's just because there is only one original negative, which is the original film after the original shooting, cut, and synthesis, and if you put this on the projector and play it, it will quickly wear out, and then the original negative will be destroyed.

So for large-scale screening, film copies are made like this: original negatives, positive films, turned negatives, copy films.

Photographic original negatives are printed and processed and a transitional form of intermediate films in the process of film screening and copying, referred to as turning the right and turning the bottom.

And the number of each conversion will be increased several times, for example, the original negative can make five or six positive films, then dozens of negative plates, and finally hundreds or thousands of copies can be made.

After several conversions, the quality of the copy was much inferior to that of the original negative. However, the level of copy tablets in the United States printing factory is far ahead of Huaxia in terms of technology, and the quality of copy tablets is quite high. So even if it is converted to other formats, such as DVD, 1080P, 2K, etc., it is to take out the original negative and digitize it, so that the picture quality is excellent.

And what about China domestic?

It's a pity that most of the Chinese movies in the 80s and 90s that we see on TV or video tapes are converted from copies or positive films, and there is no color grading and correction in the process, so the effect we see is very poor, and those extremely backward 5 cents special effects production will cause low quality.

So why doesn't Huaxia use the original bottom to turn magnetic?

Mainly because of the problem of the original negative, the original negative is actually quite dangerous to put on the magnetization machine, once scratched, it will cause irreversible damage, which is one of the reasons.

In addition, the main reason is that the picture is not taken seriously. When we look at the movie images of the 90s, we can see scratches and small circles of replacement, which are standard features of copies.

Back to the topic, if Li Fangcheng insists on making the highest picture quality, even if he grits his teeth and makes it, then, where to play it? Is it possible to play it with IMAN image quality and compress it into 2K image quality? What is the point of this?

It's better to shoot on film, and then when the time comes, you can directly convert to 4K quality or even higher, besides, it really doesn't work, remakes are always possible.

"According to the highest standards of regular cinemas, otherwise it would be meaningless if there was no cinema to show it. Li Fangcheng reluctantly gave up the current unrealistic IMAX production.

"Okay, no problem, but, on the cinema side, has the distributor's problem been solved?" Chris breathed a sigh of relief, if it really does it according to the IMAX quality, to be honest, it may not be possible to make it in a year.

Especially the implementation of this technology in animation, which no one has ever tried!

But the problem with the issuance......

Li Fangcheng also has a headache, this problem is even more serious than the production problem!

"There's definitely nothing we can do about the distribution, so let's talk about the script first. Keith brought Li Fangcheng's thoughts back: "I have made a preliminary estimate of the special effects scene of this script, it will take at least 8 months, and the risk is a bit big." ”

"8 months, what is the reason for such a long production time?" Li Fangcheng came back to his senses, his brows furrowed.

"One reason is that there are not enough members of the team. Keith said solemnly.

"Not enough?" asked Li Fangcheng suspiciously.

"Yes, there will be a lot of special effects used in the production, including simulating ocean waves, deep-sea environments, etc., which require the use of a large number of calculations to calculate the motion collision trajectory of particles, the drawing of effects, etc., if according to the situation of our current team of 531 people, in the case of such a detailed sub-shot explanation, it will take 8 months to complete it quickly, and there are still some technical problems to be solved. Keith laid out all the problems he faced.
