It was widely distributed in East Asia, but due to environmental degradation and other factors, the population declined sharply, to the 80s of the 20th century, only in the southern foothills of the Qinling Mountains in Hanzhongyang County, in the southern part of Shaanxi Province, China, there were only 7 wild populations, and then after artificial breeding, the population has reached more than 2,000 (2014), of which the wild population exceeded more than 1,500, and the distribution area of the crested ibis has expanded from southern Shaanxi to Nanhe, East China and other places.
