Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Kite with a Broken String
Cecilia's pale face was as cold as the ice on the walls of Fort Savoie in the middle of winter.
The glimmer of the Runethrone shone through the gap in the broken upper floor, and a light rain fell in the shimmer, like a very thin, very short broken thread, and the smoke and dust that flew up when it collapsed had not yet dispersed, and the dust that carried the glory of Savoy Castle once flew in the sky, like a group of flying elves in the shimmer and rain. They danced around Cecilia as if to see off the beautiful and pure angel.
Victor gently straightened Cecilia's sideburns and wiped the black and red blood from the corners of her pale lips. But the blood couldn't stop, and every time Victor wiped some of it, more blood gushed out of Cecilia's throat. Victor continued to rub, and rub, anger growing in his crimson eyes and a beastly roar in his throat.
- Why can't you let her leave clean!?
"Who's there!?" someone in the ruins of the upper floor asked, "Cecilia, are you there?"
Victor froze, and he recognized it as Edie Glopp's voice. The shimmer of light shining on Cecilia was obscured by the shadows, and Victor shuddered, his face extremely pale.
A heavy inhale came from behind him, "Cecilia...... No, Charlotte, you damn bastard, what did you do to her!"
Victor was on his back, his psychic sense sensing a deadly threat. Edie drew his sword at him, and he stabbed not at his limbs, but at his heart. He wanted to kill himself!
Victor had no intention of running away at first, and after Cecilia died for saving him, he was in a state of self-blame, guilt, and disgust for his existence. But when he suddenly thought of Charlotte, and of the woman he missed most in his own (and indeed himself), he rose up great anger and unwillingness for Cecilia.
It occurred to him that if he died here, Charlotte might never know that a girl was stupid enough to die trying to save his astral body. And before that, Cecilia was clearly suspicious. She's stupid, isn't she?
If Charlotte didn't have any feelings for Cecilia, then he had to teach that bastard a hard lesson! In fact, thinking of this, Victor even had a little bit of expectation, well, more than a little, a lot.
It occurred to him that if that was the case, then Victor, a pseudonym, could at least replace the original in his love for Cecilia. Even if Cecilia is in love with Charlotte, not Victor.
A strong desire to survive erupts from Victor. If before that, Victor had only lived for freedom, now he had to live with a heavy and true love, as a witness to the girl's beauty, purity, passion, and sincere love.
He really felt love, not the false emotion that Charlotte passed on to him, but the real love that he felt in Victor as an independent individual.
Luster for freedom and love causes Victor to flash away from Edie's sword, and he confronts Edie across Cecilia's body. At this time, because of the continuous consumption of demonic energy, the dream factor that built his body began to vibrate, and what was manifested in reality was that his body rippled like a phantom.
This was interpreted by Edie as an illusion, and of course, he was right.
"You killed her?" Edie's pupils constricted, her face pale, and the rain trickled down his cheeks, making him look like a ghost fished out of the water.
Victor opened his mouth, and it occurred to him that if he hadn't tricked Cecilia into taking her hostage, or even violently holding her hostage, maybe things wouldn't have turned out this way.
He couldn't refute Edie's question, so he could only nod.
The tip of Edie's sword trembled like a snake's head, and Victor understood that it was not a sword skill, but that he was extremely uneasy.
"You know she loves you very much, that's why you have no fear?" Edie's voice seemed to come from Jiuyu, "If she knew that I killed you, she would be very sad." But tell me, how am I going to let go of this hatred?"
Edie suddenly roared, "You bastard killed my favorite girl—"
He sprinted with his sword, like a giant ship breaking through the rain curtain through the waves, and the drizzling rain was hit by the potential energy like scattered waves.
With a flash of swords, Edie's long sword stabbed into Victor's chest, smashing Victor's body into scattered smoke with a huge kinetic energy.
Victor's voice came from the air, saying, "Edie, I'm sorry, I can't die yet. I am a witness to this immaculate love, and I, I can't give up this life that she saved. Edie, I'm going to live, I'm going to find a way to save her with my own hands!"
A shadow scurried through the ruins like a spiritual snake, Edie swung his sword with both hands, and a sword light broke through the rain curtain and buzzed into the ruins, and in the collapse of the ruins, the shadow finally disappeared.
Edie chased two more steps, looked back at Cecilia's pale cheeks lying in the faint light, and finally gave up the pursuit.
He turned back and walked back to Cecilia, who was half-buried in the rubble, and the enchanted sword that had been given to him on the day of his knighthood and which had been passed down as a family treasure fell to the ground with a thud, and Edie took off his coat and draped it over Cecilia's cold corpse.
He reached out to caress Cecilia's cheek. In her lifetime, Edie had never had such an opportunity to be intimate. More than once he had fantasized about whether Cecilia's cheeks were cold or warm, but whatever the temperature, only one thing Edie was sure of was that it was absolutely soft.
But the outstretched hand was fixed in the air, and finally failed to touch Cecilia's pale cheek. Because the question of anticipation was gone, Cecilia's face must be icy now, like snow in the north, cold to the bone.
"You're so stupid, really, you're willing to give up everything for someone who doesn't love you. ”
Edie hid his face in silence, tears streaming down his fingers, and he knelt quietly in the ruins, like a knight guarding the princess turned into a statue.
The enchanted longsword that he once regarded as a symbol of glory was tossed aside, and a drizzle fell, gently brushing the dust of the ruins raised in the sky. The rain flowed down the mud and sand on the long sword, and the original cold sword body became gray, and even the hilt badge representing the family name was covered with a layer of dirty mud and sand.
Edie covered her face, feeling as if the world had left them in the glimmer of light in the dark ruins. This is the only island of light in the darkness, and it shines through this cold and dark corner because of the beautiful girl. But soon, this glimmer of light will be extinguished, and the darkness will engulf the whole world with an arrogant silence.
The phrase 'you are so stupid' was said to Cecilia as well as to himself.
He only now understands that, unconsciously, the thread that pulls him is no longer glory and wealth and knightly loyalty. He was now a kite with a broken string, he was shamefully free, and from now on, he could no longer fight for Clayderman.
