Chapter 47: The Temptation of the Banquet
On the way to the Arrow County Barracks, Charlotte had a brief exchange with Edie.
"Long time no see, Edie. Charlotte opened the conversation first, "How are you doing?"
"Compared to the days before I met you, it is undoubtedly heaven. Edie rode his horse as he greeted Charlotte again, "Long time no see! β
Charlotte was not happy with the rustiness that was hidden in his respectfulness.
"Hah! now you call me Count with all your eyes? How do I feel that you are becoming more and more like my brother? I remember when you were in the town of Santos and in Lucerne, you were not so polite to me. Especially in the town, I can still recall the wary and unhappy look in the dust when you opened the wooden door. β
Charlotte wanted to pull each other in through memories.
"I used to be a thug, Lord Count, but now I'm the Viscount of Erosa. Especially when I came to Yarrow County as a reinforcement, I can't give the impression that the nobles of Erosa don't know how to do things. β
But it is clear that Charlotte's efforts did not pay off. The mage smiled awkwardly, and then, Brent's call freed him from his awkward situation.
"Alright then, let's talk when we find a place where no one is around. At that point, you won't be able to look at things like Evan anymore. Honestly, it's boring!"
Charlotte blinked, and of course, his joke didn't make Edie laugh.
In this way, he exchanged information with Brent all the way, and before he knew it, he had arrived at the Arro County Barracks.
"I'm sorry, brother!" Brent smiled at Charlotte as he turned over and dismounted, "The military situation is urgent, and I've been living in the barracks these days to study countermeasures. I swear I'll give you a great banquet when the war is won, but tonight, let's just leave it at that!"
"Well! It reminds me of hell when I was a knight training, but I can understand it. β
It's a lot more casual to talk to Brent, because of their close identities, blood relations and naughty experience back then, Charlotte will not deliberately put him in the position of the king.
Walking all the way to the central camp, Charlotte roughly observed the layout of the barracks at night. Various military installations are layered on top of each other, often passing through a fork in the road, and you can see hidden horse rejection and trenches.
Even if the military literacy is not high, Charlotte can feel the extraordinaryness of this military camp. Compared with the one-and-a-kind arrangement of Viscount Austin, Brent's barracks were clearly more distinctive.
Only then did he suddenly remember that his seemingly cynical brother loved to read the most in his life. When he was mischievous as a child, Brent always liked to pretend to be a general, commanding the children of the nobility to arrange their troops. At that time, the only one who dared to choke with Brent was Charlotte, who was a two-life person.
"It's here!"
The central tent was a circular group of tents where high-ranking officials seemed to live, and when Brent arrived in the square in the center of the tent, his retainers were lined up in two rows according to their status.
"Let's welcome Her Highness Rebecca's blood relative!an ally from the North!my closest brother!"Valente put his arm around Charlotte's shoulders, "He's Charlotte Clayderman, the rightful heir of Icewind Castle!"
All the generals and officials gave enthusiastic applause, and that enthusiasm was not fake, and everyone's faces were filled with positive emotions of excitement and excitement.
"And, of course, our staunch ally, Viscount Edie from Erosa, who brought us the powerful knights of the Second Branch of the Royal Order of Erosa!"
He grabbed Edie again. This time, the applause dropped slightly, and there were insincere perfunctory smiles on people's faces. There were even a few reckless guys who simply clasped their hands to their chests and stared at the expressionless Edie with resentful eyes.
- It seems that because of the reinforcements incident a while ago, Edie was not popular in Rocente. Charlotte thought.
"It doesn't need to be like that, to be honest, you know I don't like such an overly warm welcome!" Charlotte said with a stiff smile on her face that would be used in a social setting.
As for his opinion, Edie gave him a look of approval.
"You're going to have to get used to it, aren't you?" Brent put his arm around Charlotte's shoulders as he walked forward, and at the same time naturally let go of Edie, and the difference between the two of them was clear, "After all, you will also be the king of the land of ice and snow in the future." β
You know, my sister is the eternal king!
Charlotte rolled her eyes and didn't answer.
What followed was the orderly and boring banquet process, which was held in the barracks, although simple and full of the smell of the golden iron horse, but not only did it not lack the slightest enthusiasm, but it still exceeded it.
Almost everyone will praise Charlotte for her impatience and justice, and talk about the good friendship between Rosente and Icewind Castle in the past. But in fact, before Lawrence came to power, there was no blood relationship between the royal family of Icewind and the royal family of Lotsente, and only the most basic communication ties between countries were maintained.
As for the flattery and nonsense of this group of generals and officials, Charlotte could only nod and smile awkwardly. But as the protagonist of this banquet, he can't find a corner to eat and drink like before. This made Charlotte, who had just experienced a fierce battle, physically and mentally exhausted.
Brent saw Charlotte's embarrassment and pulled Charlotra aside as the banquet was in full swing. He took the red wine and smiled apologetically at Charlotte.
"It's me who didn't think it through, just thinking about welcoming you, but not taking into account your exhaustion and the enthusiasm of the officials. β
Charlotte drank the red wine in her glass and sighed as if to relieve her tiredness, "Why, I know what you want, I just hope that in the future, this kind of banquet can be perfect with a little less." β
"Don't worry, I promise you that from this day until you win, you will not want to know the beautiful girl of Rosente through all kinds of banquets. But I promise you, when the war is over, I will give you a banquet of the highest scale!"
"I'm not you, brother. I'd rather not have such an opportunity!"
"You know what? You look like an ascetic, not some Grand Duke of Icewind Castle. I bet all the girls at tonight's party will fight for the night with you if you want to!"
"Come on, that's going to kill me!"
"Huh, is your body no longer good?"
Hearing this, Charlotte rolled her eyes. He thoughtβI'm not telling a lie! If I knew that I was going to plant the world like you, my sister would have killed me!"
At this moment, a man of nearly sixty years of age walked up to the two of them, he was of short stature, but he was quite capable. However, if you look closely, you can see the loose old skin on his face, like an obese person who has just lost weight.
Charlotte had some impressions of him, one of the few great nobles introduced by Valente at the beginning, and now the chancellor of the Valentine court.
"I'm sorry to disturb the conversation between the Grand Duke and the Count. He handed Charlotte another glass of red wine and raised the glass in his other hand, "But allow me a chance to have a drink with the famous Earl of Wintercastle." β
"Are you more interested in the Earl?" said Brent, shrugging self-deprecatingly, "what a shame it is for me, the Grand Duke." β
"Oh, don't do that, my lord, after all, you're a guest from afar!" the Chancellor bowed exaggeratedly to Brent, "I'll apologize to you later, so I beg you not to take my old man's faux pas to heart." β
Brent shook her head at Charlotte, making a helpless expression.
For Brent's court chancellor, the vital left and right deputies, Charlotte naturally will not be rude. The two chatted a few words, and each drank the wine in his glass.
"Yes, Count. After the prime minister praised Charlotte a few words, he pretended to be casual and asked, "The Earl came to Locente alone this time, won't the Grand Duke of Sylvia be worried?"
Charlotte had a premonition, he glanced at Brent, who was sipping alone, and replied coldly and reservedly, "It's okay." β
The intention of not wanting to continue the conversation was obvious, but the prime minister covered his mouth exaggeratedly as if he was not aware of it, "How is it possible! You must know that you are the only heir of the Grand Duke of Sylvia! Isn't she worried about your safety? At the very least, she must send an elite of the Mage Tower to protect you!"
Charlotte put down her glass slightly unhappily and stared at the prime minister with a smirk, "You're right. It's really not safe for Rosente right now, maybe I should follow my sister's orders and get back to Icewind Castle as soon as possible. What do you think?"
