The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. The Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. The Council has 15 members, each of whom has one vote. The Council also elects, together with the General Assembly, the members of the International Court of Justice.

The "five permanent members" (i.e., China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France), as often referred to in the media, play an important role in the UN Security Council. The powers of these five permanent members are more powerful than those of the President of the General Assembly.
