Chapter 30: The Light and Color of the Dinner Party
Elk Tower, the tallest building in Sacramento, is home to the Governor's Christmas dinner.
Although it is less than a kilometer from the residence, a ride is still necessary.
As the hosts of the banquet, the Warren family will be the first to arrive at the venue.
Governor Warren didn't have to do the banquet himself, all he had to do was decide on the list of guests to be invited and attend the banquet.
Under the tower of elk, there were reporters who had heard the news. When the governor's car arrived, reporters excitedly pressed the shutter of their cameras.
When they got out of the car, the governor and his wife did not walk side by side, Earl Warren led Dora and Dorothy left and right, walking in the front, Nina holding Robert and following closely behind, and Virginia holding her brother Evan's arm in the rear.
Evan was not used to being watched for the first time, and the flashing lights of an old-fashioned camera couldn't open his eyes.
Evan stiffened his sister and let out a long sigh of relief. Virginia intimately wiped the sweat from Evan's forehead and said, "Evan, why do you look nervous this time?"
Evan casually defended: "Where I was nervous, I was just flashed in the eyes by the magnesium light." ”
Arriving at the venue on the second floor, Evan saw Joe, assistant to the governor, at the entrance of the venue.
"Hey, Joe, don't you have to follow Mr. Governor?" Evan greeted.
"Good evening, Evan, Virginia. You're so beautiful tonight. After boasting, Jo replied, "No, sir, let me be here to greet you." ”
"There is still a little time before the banquet starts, if you feel bored in the venue, you can go to the lounge next to it and wait. ”
"Thanks for the reminder, Joe!" Virginia smiled in thanks, "Evan, are we over, Dora is waving to us!".
"Okay!" replied Evan, and before leaving, he confessed to Joe, "Joe, you know Carl Barton, can you let me know if you see him?"
Joe nodded and said, "I know, please rest assured!"
Evan nodded in gratitude and walked with Virginia towards where the family was. As he walked, Evan observed the venue. He often came to the Elk's Tower, but this was the first time he had come in.
At a cursory glance, the area of the venue is about 1,200 square meters, with windows on the north and south sides, the entrance on the west side, a podium in the middle of the east side, and a Christmas tree at least three meters high on the right side of the podium, which is interwoven with colorful small lamps and other decorations.
The part of the hall near the podium is empty, and the rest of the space is divided into two parts, north and south. On the south side is the dining table. Because the dinner was buffet-style, there was no tableware on the table except for flowers for decoration. As for the north, there is a buffet area, and the dinner has not yet started, and now there are only desserts, drinks and drinks available.
Because it was still early, there were not many people in the hall now, and most of the people walking back and forth were waiters and banquet staff.
As he passed by the drink section, Evan grabbed a glass of orange juice and was about to taste it when he noticed Virginia looking at him with a strange look in her eyes.
Evan raised the juice in his hand to his sister and asked, "Do you want it?" ”
"No, thank you!" Virginia shook her head, "I don't want to be in and out of WC too often. ”
"Don't want it, don't say it, right?" Evan thought for a moment, and though he didn't put the cup back, he didn't drink it again.
The Warrens were standing near the Christmas tree, chatting cordially with a middle-aged man with half-bald hair. The children stood beside Nina in an orderly manner, but Dora was obviously quiet for long, and when she saw that Evan and Virginia were late, she kept waving to them. When Evan finally rendezvous, Dora looked at the cup in his hand, her eyes twitching.
Evan asked silently with his eyes, "You want?"
Dora chick nodded like a peck of rice.
Evan made a gesture to hand over the cup, and Dora happily stretched out her hands to take it, but she didn't expect Evan to take it back halfway.
Dora's arm froze in the air for a moment before she put it down, glaring hatefully at the snickering Evan and pouting unhappily.
Nina's small movements were watched by Nina, who was silent because her husband was talking to a guest.
After "messing with" Dora, Evan didn't make any more jokes. It didn't take long for the conversation to turn to the governor's family, the man Earl Warren introduced to the family one by one.
"This is my wife, Nina. ”
"Nice to meet you, beautiful lady. The gentlemanly man reached out and took Nina's hand, and lowered his head to kiss her on the back of her hand.
Nina replied decently, "Me too, sir!"
Then came Virginia, Dora, Dorothy, and Robert, and the man was meticulous in his salute to everyone, and everyone returned the salute one by one.
The last to be introduced was Evan, and Earl Warren proudly introduced: "This is Evan, probably the smartest child in my family." I also have an older son, Colin, who enlisted in the Army a few months ago and is now presumably washing decks across the Pacific Ocean. ”
The middle-aged man smiled slightly, shook Evan's hand cordially, and said, "What a handsome young man, Evan, I've heard of you, from Ando Kazukiyo." I have a daughter, her name is Sarah, and she is about your age, so you can get to know each other when you have a chance. ”
Evan was stunned for a moment, then smiled shyly and replied, "Thank you for the compliment...... Mr. ”
The man saw Evan's dazedness, and his eyes turned to find out the reason, he patted Evan on the shoulder, glanced at Earl next to him, and said with a smile: "Introduce myself, my name is James Roosevelt." ”
Evan opened his mouth in surprise and blurted out, "Is that that Roosevelt from Theodore Roosevelt?"
James's heart flashed with surprise, but his face was not shocked, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "It's not wrong for you to say that."
But that's not right.
Evan's mind flashed.
Just then, another guest approached the governor, and after shaking hands with Earl again, James walked to the side, making room for others.
After James was gone, Evan seized the opportunity to quietly ask Earl: "Mr. James is Franklin D. Roosevelt's ......"
Earl replied, "Firstborn!"
The answer in his mind was confirmed, and Evan, who did not know much about American politics, especially at this time in time, became more and more confused.
Isn't the former president a Democrat?
James, who inherited his father's legacy, is also a Democratic Party boss, but how could he come to California to attend his father's dinner? And so early!
It's weird!
After all, I don't know what the purpose of this dinner party my father is organizing.
Well, forget it, I still don't want him to be so brain-burning.
There's still something to do later, so I'll have to save a little effort.
