Prologue (4) - 9 Mixed phalanx tactics
"There's someone over there!"
"There's an ambush!"
A small group of the enemy located in one section of the line turned in a panic and prepared to return fire.
"It's too late!" said an enemy soldier who stopped another enemy soldier from loading his ammunition, "load your bayonet and prepare for a white-knuckle fight!"
With such a sudden attack from behind the hillside that the enemy soldiers did not have time to reload their weapons and counterattack—let alone turn the entire line at ninety degrees.
In line tactics, the frontal firepower output of a line column is naturally not to be underestimated, however, for attacks from both sides of the line column, the defense of the line column is naturally worse than that of the phalanx.
The length-to-width ratio of the line column is very large, that is, when dealing with attacks from the flank, the combat width of the line column is actually very small - in layman's terms, the soldiers in front of the line are surrounded and enter the battle, and the soldiers in the rear cannot immediately carry out a melee counterattack for a while.
These enemy line infantry, although they have a certain combat experience and combat skills, can also be at the upper level of the entire enemy's strength in the level of white-knuckle combat.
However, the opponents of these enemies, the soldiers of Rotsetitia, are also the elite of the kingdom!
In terms of white-knuckle combat, no matter how elite the line soldiers are in the enemy, they can't compare to the melee masters of the Kingdom of Rotsetitia!
"Close, close, close, form a bayonet formation!" shouted one of the enemy's line commanders, commanding the soldiers at one end of the line.
These well-trained enemy soldiers soon formed a small solid phalanx on the spot at one end of the line - the soldiers in the front row of the phalanx were half-crouching on the ground and pointed their bayonets forward and upward, the soldiers in the second row were holding the guns in their hands and pointing their bayonets forward, and the soldiers in the middle of the phalanx were also vigilant at all times, ready to replace the wounded soldiers in front at any time.
Such a solid phalanx looks more difficult to break.
However, for the Rotsetitia soldiers here, such an opponent is not difficult to deal with!
That's right!
The enemy soldiers in this small solid phalanx were opposed by a mixed array of crossbowmen and spearmen on the side of Rotsetitia.
Like the enemy's solid phalanx, this phalanx of crossbowmen and spearmen was also neatly arranged.
In this mixed phalanx of Rotsetitia, the short spearmen were lined up on all sides, and the crossbowmen were lined up in the middle.
The entire mixed phalanx can be seen as a simplified version of a miniature "fortress" made up of soldiers who can move.
The spearmen in the front row of this phalanx directly half-squatted down, and the soldiers behind immediately raised the crossbow in their hands and quickly loaded the crossbow arrows.
"Be careful, they have crossbows!" one of the soldiers reacted, this phalanx of Rotsetitia soldiers was not a pure phalanx of short spearmen.
However, the enemy has only reacted now, but it is too late!
With a "whoosh" sound, the bolts came out of their strings and struck the enemy forces in front of them at a rapid pace.
The enemy soldiers were not equipped with any armor - the enemy's cloth line uniforms could not stop the attack of the crossbow arrows.
In a chaotic shout, the soldiers in the front row on one side of the phalanx were beaten to pieces!
"Make a cut, hit their crossbowmen!" ordered the deputy commander of the line command, and from his tone, it was obvious that he was in a hurry.
"Be careful!" an enemy on the side suddenly pulled a line to command the deputy captain.
The deputy captain of the line command has not yet reacted, what is happening......
