Section 124 The Emperor's Capital 29
If you talk about the trip itself, Thomas really has nothing to complain about.
As a top journalism student (yes, Thomas was an excellent student), he knew what he was shooting wasn't ordinary.
In this world, being a photographer is a high-risk profession. It's not that photography with a camera kills, it's that it's a very difficult thing for a photographer to become famous. It is very difficult to take those real and shocking photos and videos that will leave the audience stunned. It even requires photographers to risk their lives.
For example, taking pictures of animals is very simple, just go to the zoo. Safe, swift and non-hazardous. But a zoo photo is not going to interest anyone. If you want to take really attractive photos and videos, you have to be real wildlife. In other words, photographers must live a hard life in the wilderness at the risk of multiple threats such as poisonous insects, wild animals, and diseases, just to be able to become famous in one shot.
Of course, it's not just wildlife photographers who have to deal with this kind of thing. For example, a battlefield photographer - then you really need to wear a bulletproof vest, hold a camera, and follow the heavily armed soldiers on the front line of the artillery fire, and live a life of close contact with the Grim Reaper.
There are many people who have gone down in history, but many more have quietly disappeared due to accidents or other reasons before they succeed.
As for those large-scale natural disasters, or sudden accidents such as suicide by jumping off a building, etc., it is a miracle that cannot be encountered.
Thomas had these things in his hands, and if they were replaced by other photographers, they would have been willing to stay in the field for three years. This is not a bumper harvest in the usual sense. Not only that, but he was surprised to pick up a gem (though he wasn't quite sure what nature it was).
And he's been doing a good job these days. He found a good campsite, which was well stocked with food and daily necessities, and did not encounter any of the difficulties and dangers he expected.
The only problem was that the two people who were traveling with him, Lu Wu and Amber, suddenly disappeared.
It's a very confusing thing. The two disappeared inexplicably, never looked back, never appeared again, and had no contact. Although there is no evidence, Thomas speculates that the two of them are most likely trapped under an avalanche (if it is under a cliff, no matter how terrible it is, there will be no bones left).
To say that people were trapped under the snow, they would have been helpless for two days. But Thomas knew that Lu Wu was a man with supernatural abilities. He had heard stories of such things: the practitioners of the East possessed some kind of ability to forcibly suppress the body's metabolism. Therefore, it can persist in an environment where there is a lack of food, water, oxygen, etc. Although it is not permanent, it has survived much longer than the average person.
Although Lu Wu has never shown such ability, Thomas is convinced that Lu Wu should be able to do this.
Of course, maybe it's some other danger. For example, if you fall into a crack, you may encounter a fierce beast (snow leopard), or if you have a sudden illness, lack of oxygen, ancient bacteria and viruses, murder by smugglers, or poisonous gas spewing from cracks in the earth...... And so on and so forth. Of course, these are all from brain holes, and the probability is really not high.
As mentioned earlier, this road is no man's land, and the ground is okay. So he ostensibly drove, but in fact he could let his brain fly, and he didn't have to worry about a figure suddenly jumping out of front of him, and he had a not-so-pleasant intimate contact with the car.
After driving out, Thomas realized that this matter might not be so simple.
When he asked for help alone, first of all, he had no credit, and the first thing others felt when they heard it was that they didn't believe it.
Even if it is the Chinese government, even if Thomas is an international friend, this kind of thing seems very suspicious and lacks credibility. The mobilization of a modern rescue force is costly, and in some ways quite expensive. No matter how people are, they have to estimate whether this is a malicious joke or not. Obviously, a lot of time will be wasted.
Then, the so-called golden 72 hours of rescue is a basic law known to everyone in and outside the industry. Of course, whether it is seventy-two hours or forty-eight hours varies from case to case, but the basic logic is obvious: the longer the time, the less likely it is to survive and the less worthy of rescue.
If everyone knew that people had been buried under the snow for three or four days (not counting the time Thomas would have to travel in the future), it is estimated that even experienced and humanitarian-ferving rescuers would not be able to raise much energy, right? In the eyes of ordinary people, this is basically digging up corpses. No, if the people buried under the avalanche are not rescued in the first place, it will be worthwhile to delay for a day or two.
Thomas couldn't tell them that Lu Wu was a cultivator with supernatural abilities, and that he couldn't die if he was buried under the snow for a few days - not to mention that Thomas himself believed in this, but he also knew that there were many people who disdained it.
If only there were a few teammates - three or four people talking together to prove it, then the likelihood of being taken seriously would obviously be much higher, right? But the problem is that there are only three people in Thomas's entire team, and two of them are missing.
As the car drove quickly across a piece of uneven ground, it jumped firmly.
Thomas had a vague impression of his surroundings, and at this distance, he might be able to try a satellite phone. But who to call? Call the police, call for help, or contact whom? But who to contact?
Thomas thought about it, and the only person he could contact seemed to be the one with the surname Gao. The two sides had a video call, and Director Gao (that is, President Gao) made it clear that he was Lu Wu's senior.
It is this statement that makes Thomas very relieved of Director Gao. He knew that these mysterious cultivators had high moral standards (as evidenced by the fact that Lu Wu had escorted three unrelated passers-by along the way, Thomas was one of them, to a safe place when he first met Lu Wu). Of course, you can also say that Thomas, a foreigner, is more stupid and naturally easy to fool, and he believes it without doubt when people say a word casually.
If it were a high factory manager, I would have known some more specific information. And in this case, even if there is any secret, he will not continue to hide it all from Thomas.
Thomas decided to drive a short distance and called Director Gao. But suddenly the satellite phone rang.
It took Thomas a while to be convinced of this. The satellite phone was newly bought, which means that the phone number, if not a secret, will not be known to many people. Who's going to call at this time?
He stopped, took a look around, and then answered the phone.
On the phone, it was the familiar middle-aged man's voice. Although he is Chinese, he really can't forget that typical American English when he hears it.
"Director Gao!" Of course, the correct name seems to be to call Vice President Gaoโof course, Thomas is still more accustomed to calling the other party Director Gao. The correct Chinese name of the other party seems to be called "Gao Shou", although this name sounds very common to Chinese, but Thomas feels a little awkward inexplicably. Therefore, Thomas has always used the honorific title "Director Gao" in Chinese to address him, which is more comfortable. By the way, Thomas is not the only one who calls him that, Ren Jian and some other people all call him that. It's almost a convention now.
"It's me, Thomas. Director Gao spoke in a very calm tone, and he called Thomas by name with a conventional attitude of elders to juniors. "I've been looking for you for a long time. โ
"Director Gao," Thomas was a little excited. "You know ......"
"Lu Wu is missing, right?" Director Gao's voice remained calm.
Almost immediately, Thomas's heart began to work wildly. He was sure that he was really the only one in the ghost place before. In other words, it is impossible to know such a thing unless you stare at it with spy satellites. Not to mention that he is thousands of miles away, across an ocean. What is a supernatural ability? This is the quintessential supernatural ability! And it is said (or so suggested by Thomas) that this ability can be cultivated.
"The ......"
"Don't talk yet, I know what you're trying to say. I can tell you, you guessed right. Lu Wu is indeed crushed under an avalanche now, of course, he is still alive. โ
Thomas mentally calculated the time quickly. All things considered, it should have been more than seventy-two hours. If the house collapses and the structure can form a space that can accommodate humans, the avalanche is far less gentle. Yes, the snow is soft and doesn't crush people by the feel. But there's no air to breathe in the snow โ a few days under normal circumstances, even a few hours (maybe a dozen minutes if it's fast) is enough to suffocate to death.
"That'...... Master Lu Wu......"
"He couldn't get out of it on his own. "Director Gao's composure is admirable, because even in this situation, he still speaks in a calm and rhythmic tone, almost like an electronic voice. "We have to find a rescue team. โ
"But the avalanche was quite large...... Thomas said. This is the truth, and it is also a temptation. He wanted to know how much Director Gao knew. Or rather, how exactly does this supernatural ability work?
"Don't worry, I know his exact location, where he is in XXXXXX, there is a large half-exposed rock nearby that can be used as a marker. Director Gao said. "Now Lu Wu is trapped below, probably twenty or thirty meters below the snow layer. โ
At this point, Thomas no longer had any doubts. This power is terrifying. He himself was at the scene of the disaster, but he didn't know where Lu Wu was. The high factory is thousands of miles away, but it is clear about the specific situation of Lu Wu's current position. To say that this is not a supernatural ability, Thomas would not believe it at all.
