The PLA created the Army Aviation in the mid-80s of the last century, when there was a great shortage of helicopters inside the PLA. The domestic Z-5 has poor performance. The developed Z-6 and Z-7 were successively dismounted, and after the establishment of the Army Air Force, all the helicopters in the army were quickly gathered in this batch of helicopters. The S-70 Black Hawk, imported from the United States in 1984, was particularly noticeable. And not just because of the special background. And also because of the excellent performance of the machine.
In the early 80s, Sino-US relations ushered in an unprecedented honeymoon period, and the two sides carried out a lot of cooperation in the military field. The Chinese government not only invited Grumman to improve the J-8 fighter plane, but also began the procurement of American-made equipment.
In July 1984, the Chinese government signed a contract with the American Sikorsky company to purchase 24 S-70 civilian Black Hawk helicopters, each priced at $7 million (the newer UH-60L is currently quoted at $8.6 million, and the MH-60G is $10.2 million).
The first four Black Hawks arrived in Tianjin, China, in November 1984 and one Zuihou was delivered in December 1985. The aircraft is all manufactured by the American Sikorsky Company, which is one of the few well-known American equipment in the PLA sequence at present, and it is also the most excellent general-purpose helicopter with plateau performance in the PLA so far.
The machine originally used two CT7-2Cs from General Electric with an output of 1625 shaft horsepower, or CT7-2D turboshaft engines with an output of 1723 shaft horsepower. The gearbox output is 3130 shaft horsepower, the internal fuel tank is 1370 liters, the rotor brakes have been greatly improved, the upper main reduction shell of the SH-60 Seahawk is used, and the Doppler navigation system of the US military standard is replaced by a LTN3100VLF navigation system. With a maximum take-off weight of 9,185 kg and a range of more than 500 km, the external cargo hook can lift cargo weighing up to 3,630 kg. The aircraft has two pilots and can carry 12 crew members in the cargo hold in general and 19 in an emergency.
Before the introduction of the Black Hawk, our army did not have helicopters that could be used at altitudes above 3,000 meters. In the snowy plateau with an average altitude of more than 3,000 meters, the oxygen content is less than half of the sea level, and the power of any engine will be reduced by about 40%, and the climate of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is harsh, and the general helicopter cannot fly.
There are even rumors that once a domestic helicopter flew to Motuo for a special mission, and after landing, it was found that the fuselage was elongated by one foot, and the plane was scrapped.
Even after the introduction, the PLA still spent a lot of manpower and material resources to complete the theoretical research on the flight routes above 3,000 meters above sea level on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the take-off weight and load at various altitudes, solved a series of theoretical problems such as starting power, and then carried out on-the-spot flight test demonstrations.
It took three months just to calculate the theory and shiyan. The test flight started from the airport at an altitude of 1,700 meters and gradually advanced to the plateau.
At an altitude of more than 3,000 meters, the engine power drops sharply, resulting in insufficient lift for the aircraft. After another three months, our researchers finally overcame the Jishu difficulties and solved the lift problem. Eventually, the Black Hawk flew over the Tanggula Mountain, which is more than 5,200 meters above sea level, and landed in the Ali area.
The paper "The Use and Maintenance of Helicopters on the Plateau" by our Jishu personnel made Shijie understand for the first time the various characteristics and great difficulties of helicopter flying on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. All aspects of the United States have also taken this as an important result and experience, and Sikorsky has gained a huge advertising effect.
The Chinese military greatly appreciates the Black Hawk's high-altitude capabilities, and in fact the S-70 is also the only helicopter in the army aviation that can operate smoothly in the plateau area. The engine performance of the aircraft is excellent, and there is a complete de-icing system on board to reduce the risk of use in highland areas.
The S-70 has participated in many rescue missions in Tibet's disaster areas and the recovery of returnable satellites, and its use intensity is high. Before 1989, the total flight hours exceeded 11,000.
High attendance will naturally increase the number of accidents, the use environment of the Black Hawk is mainly on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the climatic conditions can be regarded as the worst on the shijie, and there have been many accidents that have destroyed and killed people. However, most of them are caused by climatic reasons or human error, and only a few are caused by mechanical failures.
According to reports, on 8 October 1987, when a Black Hawk helicopter belonging to an army aviation regiment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) was flying in Qinghai Province, its tail rotor suddenly failed and fell to the ground, breaking into three pieces after landing, resulting in three deaths and 15 injuries. The Air Force's Flight Accident and Failure Analysis Center immediately dispatched personnel to the scene to investigate. At the same time, Sikorsky also sent three groups of experts to the crash site to examine the wreckage, and the two sides reached a stalemate over the cause of the accident.
Later, our expert team found an imperceptible metal knife mark on the tail rotor of the helicopter, which was analyzed by electron microscope and spectroscopy. It was confirmed that the undetected knife mark caused the metal to fatigue and fracture, resulting in the destruction of the machine. The United States compensated China $3 million. This is also the first time that China has successfully claimed compensation from a foreign businessman since importing military aircraft.
Both the Army Airlines and Sikorsky had high hopes for the Black Hawk, and Sikorsky had hoped to sell 100 Black Hawks to China. However, due to well-known reasons. After 1989, these ideas fell through.
China has tried to imitate the Black Eagle surveying and mapping, hoping to finally achieve localization like the Z-8 and Z-9, but due to the weak industrial base at that time, this beautiful idea was not realized.
If China can successfully survey, map and imitate it, there will be a qualitative leap in the transportation capacity of our army's air force.
However, after 1989, although Sino-US relations reached a stalemate again, the supply of spare parts for Black Hawk helicopters was not interrupted, and it is said that because China's Black Hawk is often used in humanitarian relief operations in Tibet and Xinjiang, the United States has not opposed the sale of these parts, and China has been able to buy necessary parts from Sikorsky (of course, some of them also use domestic parts), accounting for a considerable part of the US military trade with Chinese mainland.
Unable to get more S-70 Black Hawks, Army Aviation soon turned to Russian Mi-17 helicopters. The large number of Mi-17s alleviates the urgent needs of land aviation. But on the whole, the advanced nature of the S-70 is beyond doubt.
For example, the T70 engine on the S-700 had only two fuses, and the modification even eliminated the fuse. The Mi-8 engine has a lot of fuses that need to be used, more than 20 adjustment points, and as many as 45 random tools. In our army, the maintenance of the S-70 is much easier than that of the Mi-8 and Mi-17. In terms of plateau performance and corrosion protection, the S-70 has an overwhelming advantage.
More importantly, with the enhancement of national strength, the Chinese Air Force's new generation of 10-ton transport helicopter Z-20 is developed on the basis of the Black Hawk, if you can get the stealth version of the Black Hawk, then you can refer to this helicopter, on the basis of the Z-20 to develop China's own stealth transport helicopter.
