Chapter 372: All-round improvement

In addition to the keen sense of smell journalists who are very interested in the "Pearl of the Orient" supercomputer, the scientific and business circles are obviously not small interested in it. Numerous organizations have sent letters of inquiry to Dongfang Electronics, hoping to visit the computer room of the "Pearl of the Orient" supercomputer.

These include world-class real rooms like the Los Alamos National Real Room and large commercial companies like Boeing. Los Alamos National Office is one of the most important scientific research institutions under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Energy, with an annual research budget of hundreds of millions of dollars allocated by the federal government.

This large studio in New Mexico, managed by the University of California, is best known for the development of the world's first atomic bomb. The first director of the room was none other than Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the Manhattan Project.

The "Pearl of the Orient" supercomputer successfully snatched the title of the world's fastest supercomputer from the M-13 of the Soviet Union. But before the M-13 came out last year, the world's fastest supercomputer was the CaryX-MP/4.

The world's first CaryX-MP/4 was installed indoors in Los Alamos National Real. After the advent of the "Pearl of the Orient", the CaryX-MP/4, which has only one-fifth of its computing power, has lagged behind in performance. The Los Alamos National Office is interested in adding a more powerful supercomputer.

Although the Cary company announced as early as the beginning of this year that their new next-generation supercomputer, Cary-2, will be officially launched next year, and the performance can greatly surpass the Soviet Union's M-13. But the Los Alamos National Real Room is clearly a little bit impatient. And according to the information that Li Xuan spied on from abnormal channels, the maximum computing speed of Cary-2 will not exceed 4 billion times per second. Far less than the 5 billion times per second of the "Pearl of the Orient".

Boeing has also taken a keen interest in the "Pearl of the Orient" watch, which was previously the same as the Los Alamos National Chamber. Both purchased the CaryX-MP/4 from Cary. When Boeing designs an aircraft, it needs to conduct a lot of aerodynamic tests. If you go to the wind tunnel every time, the amount of money you need to invest is undoubtedly astronomical.

With supercomputing, Boeing can use mathematical models to build specialized application software, so that a large number of pre-simulation simulations can be completed on a supercomputer. The more powerful a supercomputer is, the closer the results will be to reality.

Compared with the hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D to develop a new model, a supercomputer that costs millions of dollars is not a big price for Boeing.

Of course, the relevant domestic parties are also in the name of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Sent a letter of academic exchange to Dongfang Electronics. Li Xuan did not refuse to come, and the most fundamental purpose of his investment in the research and development of the "Pearl of the Orient" supercomputer was to make a name for himself in the Oriental Group.

And now the actual effect of receiving the goods is even better than Li Xuan expected. "Pearl of the Orient" not only once again made Dongfang Electronics Company once again on the front page of the world's major mainstream media, but also had the opportunity to make Li Xuan recover the initial investment.

You must know that the real money he has invested in supercomputer projects has exceeded 20 million US dollars. If it weren't for Li Xuan's spending of money, the development process of "Pearl of the Orient" would not have been so fast!

Since the "Pearl of the Orient" has the possibility of recovering its investment through commercial operation, Li Xuan naturally does not need to cherish the performance of the supercomputer. Because as soon as the "Pearl of the Orient" comes out. The parallel computing design it uses is no longer a secret.

Li Xuan and the Oriental Group did not need to hide it, so as to appear that they were petty, so they simply generously welcomed news media, academic institutions, and commercial companies from all over the world to visit the computer room of the "Pearl of the Orient".

The "Pearl of the Orient" supercomputer was successfully launched. In addition to the great fame that it has brought to Dongfang Electronics, it has also brought many practical benefits. For example, in the process of developing the "Pearl of the Orient", the subsidiaries of the Oriental Group did their best to cooperate with the research. A series of technical problems have been solved, and dozens of new patents have been applied as a result.

Others may soon be able to figure out how parallel operations work. But it is not easy to quickly create a supercomputer similar to the "Pearl of the Orient". In fact, as early as the beginning of the development of the "Pearl of the Orient" project, Chen Shiqing and his team have begun to put forward various theoretical studies on parallel computing.

So Chen Shiqing was under Li Xuan's order. In order to quickly accept the research idea of parallel computing. But until now, when the industry is still discussing the combination of the right number of vector processors (ranging from 8 to 16) for parallel computing, the "Pearl of the Orient" supercomputer has reached the point where it can allow 600 S-100A processors to operate at the same time.

The Pearl of the Orient consists of 75 nodes, each containing 8 processors. While other industry peers are still stuck in solving the problem of parallel operation of 8 processors, Chen Shiqing has successfully broken through the problem of high-performance network interface connecting the communication between various nodes.

As early as the establishment of Aikang, Li Xuan attached great importance to network connection technology. This allowed Aikang to quickly occupy the big fat of the school education computer market through the network solution of the guò system when it just entered the personal computer market, thus laying a good foundation for the rapid development of Aikang.

In fact, Aikang joined the Ethernet Alliance early, but with the current transmission rate of Ethernet, it is far from meeting the requirements of supercomputers. It was not until Cisco launched VFIO technology in 2011 that the network interface of the Ethernet structure began to be used on a large scale in supercomputers.

Before Ethernet, another InfiniBand network interface was found in supercomputers. InfiniBand is a widely used networking technology specification, but it is not intended for general network connections, but for server-side connectivity issues.

With the intervention of Li Xuan, Aikang Company applied the design concept of InfiniBand to its own interface technology in advance. Each node of the supercomputer is equivalent to an independent server, and the new technology of iKang has successfully achieved high-speed connections between nodes in the supercomputer.

In the next step, this network interface technology will be widely used in the network solutions provided by Akon. This allows the server to communicate with the storage device and other servers in the LAN at high speeds, thereby increasing the operating rate of the entire LAN.

Similarly, in order to cooperate with the research of the supercomputer project, the Oriental Research Institute has further mastered the vector processing technology. And on the basis of the S-100 processor, a completely new and improved S-100A was introduced. The vector-optimized S-100A processor has even better graphics processing capabilities!

It can be said that through the research and development of the "Pearl of the Orient" project, the technical reserves of the entire Oriental Group have become more profound, laying a more solid foundation for future market competition......!
