Chapter 13

Rosa knelt in her room, in a corner of the front of the RV. It's close to the engine, it's always noisy and hot on weekdays, and the smell of old motorhomes with oil coming out of the yellowed plastic air outlets gives the air a disgusting smell of saliva. But Rosa knew she should stay here, and people like her belonged here.

It's like Daniel told her that God had given her these sufferings precisely to give her the opportunity to atone for the mistakes of the first half of her life.

Above Rosa's head, a black wooden cross was glued to a plastic wood-grain decorative board that had begun to crack.

The year after Rosa and Daniel met, Daniel brought it to her from the Rose Bowl flea market, and with that connoisseur look he told Rosa that the cross was a real antique, with a small mark on the back indicating that it came from Turin, Italy.

"It may have been placed with the shroud of the saints. ”

Daniel said.

And it is precisely because of this that Rosa feels extremely relieved every time she kneels in front of this cross.

She always felt that the supreme power was gazing at her tenderly through the little golden crucifix on this cross.

"Please forgive me—please forgive me for my sins—"

At this moment, Rosa was muttering to herself, grabbing a heavy thick hemp rope and whipping her back. Blood and sweat soaked her clothes, and her spirit slowly became trance and illusory in that intense pain.

"Click-"

A small voice interrupted Rosa's neurotic self-atonement.

The woman in a trance looked blankly in the direction where the sound came from, her pupils narrowing for a moment.

"No ......"

Rosa shuddered.

The cross on the wall was toppled.

Rosa didn't know what was happening, the cross fell head down and feet up to the ground, it turned into an inverted cross, and just like that, it fell in front of her.

A symbol of the terrible, evil Antichrist.

Rosa felt like she was almost suffocating.

"Oh God, O God...... What the hell is going on......"

Goosebumps of fear ran through Rosa's body.

She grabbed the cross, and then she couldn't believe that there was a clear crack in the image of the crucifixion on the cross.

Rosa felt a blackness in front of her eyes, and she trembled and grabbed the cross, finally getting up after several falls.

She staggered towards the back of the car. She knew that Daniel would be there, and every time Calvin made a mistake, Daniel would be there to teach that child carefully and gently.

"Honey, I think something terrible has happened-"

Rosa muttered bitterly, then tore open the velvet curtain.

She saw Daniel and Calvin.

Her body stiffened for a moment as if she had been watched by Medusa, and her voice stopped abruptly.

"Rosa?!"

Daniel jerked his head back, he looked in shock at the woman who was definitely not supposed to be here.

For the first time in her life, Rosa saw a flash of panic on Daniel's face.

Oh no......

She would rather Daniel look back and smile at her with that reassuring, calm smile. If that was the case, she believed something must have gone wrong.

She was willing to believe in Daniel—her lover, her mentor, her redeemer.

However, before Daniel spoke, he used that touch of panic to give Rosa the truth of the matter.

Rosa felt like she heard the sound of her heart cracking—"poof—a small muffled sound, like a parchment bag filled with hot water being punctured. The water from the parchment pouches flowed out, and they ran wild in Rosa's veins.

"You-"

Rosa grabbed the cross and walked into Daniel step by step.

At first she was slow, but after a few steps she slammed into Daniel like a bull.

"--You fucking bastard! What are you doing to Calvin?!"

Rosa's anger almost set her on fire. She pounced on Daniel and began to bite him hard.

Daniel didn't have that kind and reliable Sven look in him anymore, and he stepped back wolfily, his hands on Rosa's nails.

"Calm down, dear, things aren't ......"

At first, Daniel tried to maintain his usual composure, and he wanted to explain, but Rosa seemed to have fallen into madness.

She smashed the cross in her hand into Daniel's face.

"Shhhh

Daniel let out a gasp as he clutched his face and numb pain came from the corners of his eyes. The moist, warm liquid wet his hands with a salty taste - Rosa made a cut in Daniel's face.

"You liar, disgusting pedophile, I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you-"

Rosa screamed with a twisted expression as she raised her hand and continued to lunge at Daniel.

The corners of Daniel's mouth tensed.

"Shut up, stinky □□!"

The man easily grabbed Rosa by the hair the moment she pounced, and he tugged at the frail woman's head and slammed it towards the cabinet at hand.

"Mom-"

Calvin screamed.

The moment Rosa appeared in front of him, he was completely in a state of collapse.

That fear almost brought his whole body to a standstill, as black shadows floated in front of his eyes as he held his breath unconsciously for a long time.

If there was anything that Calvin would never want to see, it would have been for Rosa to find out, and the fear of this event was even greater than that of Daniel himself.

His mind went blank and time stood still—until Rosa's blood woke him up suddenly.

Calvin cried and jumped onto Daniel's back, and in vain he tried to break Daniel's hand, and his mouth uttered a completely out of tune, frightened pleas for mercy.

Daniel's movements stopped.

He took a deep breath.

"Shut up. ”

He said.

It is difficult to tell if he was speaking to Rosa or warning Calvin.

The young boy was completely unable to understand what Daniel was saying, and his cries poured out of his throat almost completely uncontrollably.

Daniel's cheeks twitched, and he roared uncontrollably.

"I'm fucking telling you to shut up—"

Then he kicked Calvin out of the way, and with his elegant, polished calfskin shoes, he rolled Calvin a few laps on the ground.

"You ...... Hybrid ......"

Rosa let out a slurred, staccato curse as she cried, much to Daniel's displeasure.

Daniel turned his head, his cheeks puffed out, and he made a smile-like expression.

"I've told you many times, my dear, that you should learn to restrain yourself - I didn't expect you to need my teachings after all this time. It's disappointing, really, disappointing. ”

Blood spurted out of Rosa's nostrils like a broken faucet, and she began to howl in pain, waving her hands in the air in vain to try to stop Daniel, her hands sliding away from Daniel's wrists again and again because of the blood—and Daniel grabbed her hair blankly, once, twice, three times...... Continued to pound Rosa's head against the low cabinet.

It's like a boring person casually slapping a basketball to pass the time.

Calvin struggled to get up from the ground, his whole body soaked in excruciating pain, a knife seemed to cut through his inner compartment inside his body, he gasped uncontrollably, and every scorching air seemed to set his airways on fire.

He stared blankly at what Daniel did to his mother, and suddenly the world seemed distant.

There was only blood in the whole world—his mother's, bright red, stinging over his vision.

Calvin blinked hard, feeling a scarlet or black emotion slowly ignite him like a flame.

He reached out and picked up a bronze statue of an angel tumbling down the carpet, which had been given to him by his admirers—not even a tenth of his beauty, so heavy that it took two hands to hold it.

But at this moment, Calvin was surprised to find that the statue had become lighter......

Ah, no, it's not that the statue has become lighter, it's that he has become lighter.

Calvin had never felt so light in his body.

"Hula-"

His wings spread suddenly.

Huge, useless, wings that had brought Calvin so much pain for the past dozen years flapped the air hard.

Calvin's body left the ground.

He held up the statue in his hand, then slammed it on the back of Daniel's head.

"Bang-"

When Daniel's head made contact with the statue, he made the same sound as Rosa's.

It's just that he didn't even snort more, and fell directly to the ground like a sandbag full of things. The back of his head was inlaid with the angel's wings, the bronze wings mingling with blood in the light and emitting a gold-like glow.

One of his hands even maintained a striking gesture, now dangling at Daniel's side, his other hand pressed under his abdomen.

Daniel's face was buried in the ground, and he looked even a little funny now, as if he was dancing some kind of dance.

Calvin's wings slowly gathered behind him, and the young boy landed as delicately as a feather to the ground.

He looked at Daniel in horror and sensed that something wasn't quite right. But for now he didn't care where the slightest mistake with drunkenness came from, he had someone more worthy of care—and after a moment's pause, he threw himself at Rosa.

"Mom-"

He shouted.

“……”

Rosa was completely devoid of her previous appearance of dancing teeth and claws, and she sat on the ground leaning against the low cabinet, staring blankly at the scene in front of her.

The bottom half of her face was a blur of flesh, blood running down her neck and down her chest.

Calvin's tears welled up.

"Mom, are you okay......"

He cautiously reached out and touched Rosa's shoulder.

Then he met Rosa's eyes.

It was a look that could make people's blood freeze instantly.

"You...... What did you do......"

Rosa muttered inarticulately.

"You, what the hell have you done......"

Calvin looked back at Daniel.

The man was still lying face down motionless on the carpet.

"It's all right, Mom," Calvin said as he trembled as he trembled, "I, I think he's fainted......"

"You killed someone, Calvin. ”

Rosa suddenly pushed Calvin the shoulder, her hand cold as if dead, hissing from her throat and pouring a hoarse cry.

"Oh my God, Calvin, you killed him—what the hell did you—"

"I ......"

Did I kill someone?

Calvin felt a strong sense of unreality, as if he had suddenly arrived in another world.

He stared at Rosa in confusion, almost unable to make out what she was talking about.

Homicide?

He noticed that the word seemed to suddenly become a different language - he didn't seem to remember what it meant.

While Calvin was stunned, Rosa fell to her knees and crawled on her knees next to Daniel's body, and she began to push him desperately.

"Daniel, God, don't do that...... Sue me and you're okay...... Oh, my God...... Daniel, come back to my ......"

As she pushed, puddles of red blood slowly spread out from beneath Daniel's body.

Calvin looked at Daniel and then at Rosa, the cold sensation cascading down his fingertips and all over his body.

He was finally in the chaos of a qiē...... Very slowly realised that he might be in big trouble.

Perhaps, more than all the trouble he's caused in the past.

"He, what's wrong with him. ”

Calvin asked weakly.

His voice sounded like someone else was speaking.

Rosa ignored him.

She looked completely devastated.

“…… No...... Oh, my God...... Daniel perked up a little...... 911…… Yes, I'm going to call 911......"

She muttered to herself in confusion, then pushed Galvin who was standing next to her and rushed to the other end of the RV, the thud of things falling to the ground as she carried them along the way.

She's looking for her phone.

On the other side of the draped curtain, Calvin stood dumbfounded next to Daniel's motionless body, his face pale. His breathing was so hard that it was like someone had put a finger in the middle of his throat.

Daniel's blood had reached Calvin's toes at some point, and the boy was startled by the wet, sticky sensation at the top of his toes.

He took a few steps back in horror, and from this angle, he could see a small patch of skin leaking out of Daniel's hair and a pool of blood, which looked like the skin of a dummy with an eerie cyan glow.

Calvin finally vaguely understood what he had done.

Like his mom said, he killed someone.

He's going to go to prison -- he's going to be sentenced to death --

Calvin thought.

He vividly recalled what he had seen during the day when he entered Jay's Bay Prison - he remembered the crazy and terrifying condemned prisoner.

Calvin's breathing became unusually rapid, and the tooth marks left by the "red deer" on his fingers began to sting.

He felt a part of his soul float out of his body.

No, I don't want that-

Calvin could faintly hear the soul crying out to him in pain.

It took him a long time to realize that it was his own voice.

It was at this time that he heard his mother's incoherent words-

"911? My lover...... Daniel...... Oh, my God...... Daniel he was knocked out...... Woowoo...... He didn't move......"

Calvin trembled with fear.

He knew that soon the police would arrive.

Soon he will be in that terrible prison.

No-

No, no, no, no, no-

Calvin felt as if his body had a will of its own. He moved on his own, his wings clutched behind his back. Pressed down, the whole person crept out from under the curtain, and with the help of the furniture, he came to the door of the RV without any obstacles. During this time, Calvin even held his breath, he had a strong instinct that the next second Rosa would spot him, and she would point to his body and scream "murderer" while telling the 911 operator that he was running away.

It turned out that he came to the door much more easily than he thought, because at this time, Rosa was still crying and talking to the 911 operator in the front of the car.

I'm going to regret it.

I'm doing something terrible --

I'm going to be finished.

Calvin's head was about to be filled with cranky thoughts, but that didn't stop him from quietly opening the door and slowly squeezing his body out of the door through the crack.

Up to this point he still thought Rosa would spot him, but the wind, the rain, and the thunder obscured the last movement of his departure.

His departure seemed almost dreamlike.

Calvin was amazed at how easy it was to leave the RV.

It's like a dream.

Ah, maybe he's just having some nightmare?

Calvin thought, inexplicably more relaxed.

He hoped that this dream would wake up soon.

In the last moments before leaving, Calvin turned his head half-crouched, tears streaming down his cheeks, and from his vantage point he could see Rosa's emaciated back and side face.

"Mom. ”

Calvin opened his mouth and shouted silently.

This was the last time he saw his biological mother in his life.
