SUSTech's goal is to become a research university, so SUSTech's undergraduate enrollment will not be too large. According to the school's plan, the enrollment quota for the first batch of this year is 800 students, and the next two years will be expanded by 200 students, and finally stabilized at the scale of 1,200 students per session.

This is much smaller than the undergraduate enrollment scale of Tsinghua University and Peking University, which are similar to SUSTech. While controlling the size of undergraduates, SUSTech will strive to expand the number of graduate students. According to SUSTech's plan, it is hoped that within ten years, the enrollment ratio of graduate students to undergraduates will reach the level of 1.5 to 1.

Li Xuan originally named the university Southern University of Science and Technology for the purpose of establishing an engineering university. The newly established SUSTech is actually divided into only two schools. One is the College of Arts and Sciences and the other is the College of Engineering.

Its School of Chinese Science is a university modeled after the United States, mainly providing students with general education.
