Chapter 46: The Surging Undercurrent (Part II)
In the middle of the Enchanted Forest grows a giant tree that grows large enough to grow into a forest on its own. Pen | fun | pavilion www. ο½ο½ο½ο½ο½ο½ γ Although everything in this forest is big, this tree is really a bit big, even if you find twenty or thirty strong men to hug it, you may not be able to hold it. From a distance, it's a tree, and up close, it's more like a foliage building.
No one knows how long the tree has lived, it has been rooted here long before Gensokyo was born. The trees that had grown there had not been able to get enough sunlight and nutrients from under their foliage, and they had died, leaving a large bare clearing to separate it from the dense primeval forest. This giant tree has become a forest within a forest.
In fairy tales, such places are generally the abode of fairies. In fact, there are really three mischievous goblins living in this tree. They hollowed out the trunk of the tree and built a tree house with everything in it. Even so, the tree still survives, and I have to say that nature is really magical.
When the weather is nice, the elven trio spreads their wings and goes out in search of new playthings and mischievous objects, adding a lively atmosphere to the forest with their laughter and angry scolding from their victims.
That's all daytime, though.
It's night, late at night, to be exact, late at night, or rather, late at night without moonlight. The dark sky was cloudy, and only the last few stars were strong enough to survive, still struggling uselessly. Eventually, they will all be consumed by darkness and disappear into the void.
Luna Childe lit a candle and sat by the window on the second floor of the treehouse, staring quietly out of the window at the dark forest, her brow furrowed. Not a single beam of starlight could break through the barriers of the branches and leaves and come to her. She could see nothing but her own reflection reflected in the glass.
The sky is unpredictable.
At night, the sky was still clear and starry, but now, it is already dark clouds and wind and rain are coming. The sky seemed to fall, overwhelming Luna's breath.
"What are you doing, Luna?"
One of her two playmates, Stara Shafia, came over at some point, sat down in the chair across from her, and asked.
"Look at the sky. Luna replied weakly, holding her chin.
"Isn't it like you can't see anything?" Starr said, glancing outside.
"yes, so, it's annoying...... Luna grumbles, "the damp and stuffy air before the rainstorm is really annoying." β
"In that case, why don't you go to bed?"
"I can't sleep, how can I sleep in this weather! I'm not Sunny ......."
"Then again," Luna looked out of the window to Star, "Star, what are you doing here?"
"Well," Starr shook his head, "I can't sleep either." β
"That's ......"
Luna casually responded, then twisted her head back and continued to look at her "heavens". Starr didn't bother her, just lowered his head and stared at the slightly trembling candle flame, not knowing what he was thinking.
The two of them sat there without saying a word, intending to spend the boring time until dawn.
Tonight, however, was longer than they had imagined.
"Luna, Luna!"
Someone is shaking Luna's shoulders so hard that she is out of her half-asleep state and fully awake.
Luna opens her eyes to find that the small candle has burned out, and outside the window there is a torrential downpour, thunder and lightning. It seemed that the rain that had been gathering for a long time finally came down after she closed her eyes.
She seemed to have been dozing for a few minutes, and she seemed to have slept for an hour, but since it was still dark, it meant that she had not slept for long.
"What's wrong, Star?"
She turned her head to look at the man who had woken her up, Sta Shafia. Luna could see through the flashing lightning outside the window, and Star's face was filled with anxiety.
"Oh no, Luna, someone...... No, something is coming. β
"Ahh
Who would run around in the forest in such a heavy rain? Could it be that this guy is having a nightmare and is scared?
"No, Luna, this thing is different from ordinary animals!" Sta hurriedly explained, "It's a little fast, it's a little ...... Unnatural. β
"I thought it was a delusion at first, but as it got closer to us...... I have to admit that it's something real. β
"How fast can it be? Sta, don't make a fuss!"
Luna frowned and pursed her lips, looking impatient. She didn't know what the usual reliable Starr had taken the wrong medicine to get so panickedβit wasn't like her.
"A minute ago, it was two miles away. β
"And now?"
"Now...... It's not moving, but I'm afraid it's already at our door......"
"Huh?"
Before Luna could figure out what she meant, the door to the first floor of the treehouse was slammed open. The wind and rain whistled down the open door of the cave and poured in from the outside, bringing with it an uninvited guest.
"Cluck", "Cluck", "Cluck"
A series of heavy footsteps, coming from the first floor, resounded throughout the treehouse. Luna could hear it coming from the doorway at first, then the hallway, the living room, and the stairs, each step closer to where she was than the last.
She didn't know who had come to her house at such a time, but she was sure she didn't want to run into that person.
"Shhh
Starr holds her index finger to her lips and motions for Luna not to make a sound. Luna nodded in agreement. Hand in hand, the two ran to the third floor with light, swift, and silent steps to wake up their companion, Sunny Milk, and together the three of them tried to find a way out of danger.
The snooze-loving Sunny was sleeping soundly at this time, and she didn't know that disaster was coming. Stara and Luna trotted all the way to her bed, lifted the covers, and pulled her up.
"Hmm...... Sleep for another five minutes......"
Even though she had been helped to sit up, Sunny still had her eyes closed and muttered her dreams indistinctly. Seeing this, her two companions hurriedly covered her mouth so that she could no longer make a sound.
"Uh......h Woo!"
Sunny was out of breath and suddenly came to her senses, staring at Luna and Star, who were standing in front of her, with a pair of big eyes, full of doubt.
"Shhh......hhh
Although Sunny didn't understand the situation, out of trust in her companion, she nodded, signaling that she would not make a sound. Seeing this, the other two were relieved and let go of the hand that was covering her mouth.
"Listen to Sonny," Starr said, bringing her face to Sonny's ear and speaking in the smallest volume she could, "there's a vicious youkai breaking in, and the three of us have to hide, as we normally would." β
Hearing this, Sunny nodded several times. So the three of them found a hidden corner and hid before the intruder reached the third floor, "as usual."
The housekeeping skills they usually use to play pranks can now be used to save their lives.
The tall black figure walked slowly up the stairs. The three elves hid in their own invisibility barriers, huddled in a ball, holding their breath, trembling as they watched the creature's every move.
It was supposed to be a man, at least in terms of figure. The guy was dripping with water, and with every step, he left a wet shoe print. He was slow and stiff, and he walked like a rusty robot, and I don't know how he got here at a speed of two miles a minute.
The light in the room was so dim that the man's face was completely obscured by shadows and was unrecognizable. The only thing that the three goblins can confirm is that he is wearing a set of black clothes and black pants.
"Click!"
Just as the man was walking very close to the three goblins, a bolt of lightning pierced the night sky and slashed down. The flash of electric light entered the treehouse, lighting up everything inside, including the man's face.
Luna Child, crouched at the front, saw his face clearly: a dead face in a state of high decay, with shattered eyes and nose leaving only three black and red holes in blood, lips ripped down to reveal two rows of jagged teeth, and many pus sores growing on his pale skin for some reason, some of which were still bleeding black or yellow pus.
For a moment, just a moment, and with this fleeting flash, Luna only had time to glance at the shattered face. However, it was this glance that imprinted this disgusting and terrifying face in her mind, and at the same time, it also shook the barrier that guarded the three goblins.
"Yikes!"
Luna's heart is overrun by fear, and one of the two barriers of light and sound is temporarily ineffective due to her vacillation. Therefore, that short scream was transmitted without hindrance and reached the ears of the man in black.
That guy, judging by his appearance, should be blind, and his nose is rotten, so he probably can't smell anything. The only sense he can use to discern his direction and find his prey is probably only hearing.
If it was Starr or Sunny who were frightened by his face, there would be no serious consequences at all. However, it is Luna, who is responsible for blocking out the voice, which is the deadliest.
The man in black listened to the argument and immediately found the three goblins who were hiding. He took a big step forward, and at once he was in front of the elves, grabbed Luna, who was at the top of the line, and grabbed her by the arm, and lifted her up.
"Whoaa
"Damn, you guy, let go of Luna!"
"Sonny, don't be impulsive!"
The balance between tracking and hiding was broken, and the originally dead silence in the treehouse immediately exploded. Luna cries and screams, Sunny goes on a rampage, and Starr stands by in a hurry. The Man in Black gripped Luna and wouldn't let go no matter how hard Sunny tried to attack him.
"Damn, is this made of stone?"
Sunny used all her strength to punch the man in black, spraining her wrist instead. She took a few steps back, rubbing her injured wrist as she thought about her next steps.
Punching and kicking obviously didn't work for this guy, but that's all Sunny could do. As a daylight fairy, Sunny doesn't have a strong enough attack at night when there is no sunlight.
Can you just watch your partner get captured?
"Sonny, come on!" Starr pulled something out of the drawer behind him and tossed it to Sunny, "try with this!"
Sunny caught it, looked closely, and saw that it was a delicate dagger that glittered in the dark. She remembered that the three of them had secretly "passed" this thing when they went on an adventure in the Western-style pavilion opposite the Lake of Mist.
At that time, they found the corpse of a youkai dressed in green at the gate of the Western-style building, and the knife happened to be stuck in the head of the youkai. This little knife is so sharp that even a monster can be killed with one blow, and it may be feasible to use it against the monster in front of you.
With this in mind, Sunny tightened her grip on her dagger and lunged forward, slashing at the hand that was holding Luna with a single blow.
Easily, unexpectedly easily. Sunny didn't even feel the slightest resistance when the knife went through his wrist, it was as easy as cutting tofu. Luna squatted and fell to the ground, her severed hand twitching and rolling wildly on the floor, and Sunny watched it all and realized that the blow had worked.
"Whoa!"
The man in black covered his arm that was sprayed with black blood and roared loudly, as if he was in pain. His arm slowly began to turn black and crack from where it had been broken, and the hand that had fallen to the ground had unconsciously turned into a pile of black debris. It seems that this knife is the nemesis of this guy.
"Luna, Star, run now!"
After saving her companion, Sunny has no intention of fighting. She tossed the blood-stained knife to the ground, then carried the terrified Luna in one hand and Sta in the other, spreading her wings and flying towards the window.
"Whoa!"
Three elves burst through the glass window and disappeared into the rainy night.
