Chapter 3: The Lady with a Light Sigh (11)
From the moment we set foot in the town, Reading swept away the tiredness of the road. Reading now looks completely different from before.
Reading had changed into a brand new outfit in a humble clothing store, and it was this outfit that made me look so impressed with him. As an envoy of the Empire, Redding did not choose a robe or any other garment that would be worn by any nobleman, but instead wore a dark purple outfit that was slightly lean and conducive to action. If it weren't for the wrinkles on his face that betrayed him, he would have really looked like a warrior now. But the way it looks now is pretty good, to be honest. At least it can give people the feeling of fairy wind bones.
"What's wrong ma'am, are you surprised by my outfit?" Reading felt my gaze linger on him for a long time, and smiled openly, "To be honest, I don't really like this kind of outfit myself, but this arid land is not a very developed place after all, and I can't find the clothes I want." But then again, when I put on these clothes, I suddenly felt like I wanted to be a few years younger, and I wasn't as slow to move as I used to. In this case, my chances of survival will be slightly better in the days when I escape. β
"And where did you get the money to buy this dress?"
"Ma'am, have you forgotten? We have been to the council hall once. β
I suddenly remembered that not long after we had entered the town, Reading had taken me into one of the town's largest and most luxurious-looking mansions.
To be honest, when I stood in front of this mansion, I found that the dΓ©cor of this mansion seemed so out of place in this town and even in this arid place. Imagine what it would be like to be in the middle of a flock of chickens with a phoenix standing in the middle of it? Indeed, that's what it feels like. I hated the place, but Reading walked in anyway. Before going in, Reading told me that if we were to get the money to recruit those adventurers, we had to go in.
Well, I felt helpless, but I chose to follow Reading. Reading had told me before that no place was safe once you set foot in this arid land. What I haven't told him yet is that I overheard the private conversation of the guards just as we left the entrance to town. Besides, it seems that the captain of the guard has succeeded in telling the Regent's envoy that we are here, and that if I don't follow him in, he might be assassinated by a killer lurking somewhere, just as I heard of a barbarian emperor being assassinated by a killer somewhere.
Of course, against an old man like Redding, who has no ability, you don't need to use a killer of that level. But even a young adult of human beings will make this old man at least unable to take care of himself. So in the end, I followed him closely.
The rest of the trip went unexpectedly well, and Reading repeated his old tricks, flashing his family crest to the guards of the mansion, and the guards brought Reading in as if he were an uncle. Even I was well received because I was a fellow traveler from Reading. Then, after Reading only made a simple request of his own to the mayor of this town, the mayor immediately gave Reading a large bag of gold in a flattering manner. He also offered to send an escort to our destination with us, which is the Courage Line.
Very well, if the mayor of the town was willing to do this and didn't hide any care. But I could see at a glance what kind of thought was hidden behind the mayor's flattering expression. No doubt he was, like the guards, eager to swallow the old man Reading alive.
Fortunately, Reading refused the mayor's request without thinking about it: "Little thing, you quickly swallow your unrealistic idea and leave." What are you that deserve to guard me? Do you know who I am?"
"Of course, of course, you are an imperial envoy. The mayor smiled with a cold sweat on his face: "My lord, I have never thought about anything bad for you, I just think about your safety... β
"For my safety?" Reading sneered, "If you can really take pictures of my safety, then don't let your trash follow me beyond your measure, I don't want to be dragged down by your trash!"
You'll not know what a drag is until you've left the town! The mayor thought so in his heart, but he still laughed again and again. "Of course, of course. I don't know if these things are enough for you, but if you don't think it's enough, I'll go and raise it for you right away... β
"Enough is enough!" Redding looked impatient, but only I knew that Redding's heart was already happy. Reading then didn't say a word to the sinister mayor, and left the town hall with me with a cold face.
"Oh, I remember, you got the gold. Then we can use the money to recruit adventurers. β
However, Reading shook his head: "No, no. Ma'am, we can't recruit adventurers here. I think you should know that everyone here wants to kill me. β
I smiled and said, "So you can see it, but I admire you." I didn't expect you to be able to act so well. β
Reading replied seriously: "No, of course I didn't act, these are my usual lives." Or rather, I've unconsciously regarded acting as my life. Actually, I also know what this mayor thinks, but as long as he is within the territory of the Danmoth Empire, he has no way to do anything to us in the open. Even if he had a plan earlier, he wouldn't just implement it in front of everyone. Besides, I am his master, even if it is the master in name, but he does not dare to do anything. Now let me answer your first question, which is why we can't recruit adventurers here. β
I held out my hand and said, "Okay, I'm interested in listening to it now." β
"That is, most of the people here are probably bought by the mayor. It's like that captain of the guard. I think even if we were able to recruit a thousand adventurers, nine hundred and ninety of them would be inserted by the mayor of Chang'an. And the remaining ten will definitely be a drag on us. β
"Okay, so shouldn't we get out of here now?"
"That's right, we'd better go with the stars. β
After daybreak, we left the place immediately after some rest, and Reading was in much better shape and mood than before. Although it is far less high-spirited than when I first set off, it is enough. At least not as desperate as before. Reading seemed to dislike the town as much as I did, and because he had bought a new horse, he was a lot faster than I was. It's going to take some effort for me to catch up with him. "Can you slow down?"
Reading stopped his progress, turned back to me and smiled and said, "How am I doing, ma'am, how am I doing now?"
"It's fast enough. But don't you think there's some danger in that?"
"Dangerous, how is it possible, this is a wilderness. We're still a few dozen kilometers away from the nearest town, but of course, we're not going to stop at that town. If we want to recruit the true elite and respect us, then we have to go to those adventurers who are outside the rule of the Yu Empire. β
"No threat? are you sure so?" I sneered, and immediately ran up to Reading, and took a cold arrow that flew out of the side, and then turned around and threw the cold arrow out, and the next second let out a terrible howl from the grass.
Reading reacted and quickly jumped off the horse and hid next to the horse.
This was the first time I'd ever encountered a horse as a shield, I smiled, and jumped onto the branch of a large nearby tree. At a glance, we could see who was attacking us.
The results have disappointed me a little and made me feel a little lucky. For the man who attacked us this time was not sent by the regent. Of course, this can be easily identified by a glance at the outfits of the attackers. The men were all dressed in rags, and they barely had a decent weapon in their hands. Of course, if the blunt knives that are usually used to chop vegetables and chop wood can be described as weapons.
"Don't worry, there's nothing, it's just a bunch, a bunch of rogues. I said to Redding, who was hiding behind his horse, and jumped in front of the group, which numbered about fifteen or sixteen. "Do you want to die or live?"
The people didn't seem to expect me to come out like this, and were obviously taken aback by my sudden appearance. But these people still made full use of their fearless nature, and rushed towards me screaming.
Well, it's a very bad choice. I casually kicked away one of the rogues who was running towards me, and shot the crossbow arrow in my hand, which luckily passed through the bodies of the three rogues. In this way, it only took me a few seconds to eliminate half of the rogues who were already in small numbers.
It was evident that my current actions had succeeded in intimidating all the rogues, who stood still in trembling and did not move, looking at me in horror.
". I said something to them casually, and then they hurried away as relieved. I was satisfied with everything now, looked back at Reading who was standing up, and said with a smile: "How is it, it's easy." And I've tried not to kill anyone. β
Reading pointed behind me, "Actually, ma'am, there's another one, standing right behind you. β
I looked back and saw that one of the rogues was slowly approaching behind me instead of trying to run away like the others. But after seeing me turn around, he hurriedly knelt on the ground.
"Why don't you get out?" I shouted, but the rogue, even though his body was shaking violently from fear, was still on his knees. He just trembled and said, "Ma'am, please take me in, ma'am." β
I tilted my head to look at the rogue, and wondered, "Why should I take you in? Shouldn't you be with your companions?"
The rogues shook their heads, "I don't want to follow them. I shouldn't have a better future than I am now, I should have a better future. β
"Very well, you stand up. I looked at him and said with satisfaction. Perhaps, this person is the kind of person I am looking for. When the rogue stood up and faced me, I noticed something different. From his figure and appearance, I can see that this rogue is actually a woman?
The rogue smiled sheepishly and removed the tattered hood from his head. "I don't think that's what my future looks like. Therefore, as a woman, I would never allow such a fate. β
"I don't accept ordinary women, I don't care if you're beautiful or not, as long as you can't, I will never take in a useless thing. So, if you want me to take you in, then you have to show your skills. β
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but I have absolutely nothing to boast about in your presence. So I guess it's better not to take it out. β
"Then why should I take you in?"
"Okay. The female rogue smiled helplessly, then spread out her hand, and suddenly a small ball of light appeared in her hand.
Very interesting. I laughed and said, "Tell me, what's your name?"
Liukou immediately felt extremely happy. Because apparently I'm already interested in her. "My name is Banks, Banksy Rena. I thank you for taking me in, and I'm sure I won't let you down!"
"We'll have to wait until later. "I got on my horse and let Reading follow me, and Banks looked a little embarrassed. Because she doesn't have any horses.
"Jump on it, if you want to follow me. I told her, but I didn't stop my horse.
Banks hesitated, but eventually gritted his teeth and made up his mind. I could see with my peripheral vision, and Banksys suddenly burst into a burst of golden light, then floated in the air, and finally landed lightly on my warhorse.
