Chapter 39: Before the Confession
Emma had no idea what Mr. Darcy was thinking, and she soon waited for Georgiana, who was out of breath as she walked. Georgiana knew what a mistake she had made when she saw Mr. Wickham, the hat on the other side of the bush belonged to Mr. Wickham, and her hasty walk away did not bring any chance to Mr. Darcy, but on the contrary, it might have caused an awkward encounter between Mr. Wickham and Emma, who were very strangers to each other. Georgiana didn't bother to talk to Mr. Wickham, so she hurriedly said hello and walked back quickly. Seeing Emma still waiting in the same place from afar, Georgiana apologized guiltily: "I'm sorry for keeping you waiting." β
Emma rubbed the cherub's soft hair. "You're fast. I met Mr. Wickham just now, let's go to the living room first, and then take a walk another day. β
When Emma and Georgiana returned to the drawing-room, Mr. Darcy, George, and Mr. Wickham were talking, and it would be more accurate to describe Mr. Wickham as talking, George occasionally reciprocating, and Mr. Darcy sitting there without saying a word.
Emma didn't seem to see the stiff atmosphere over there, and naturally pulled Georgiana to sit on the other side. Georgiana glanced at Mr. Wickham and did not offer to join the gentlemen's discussion. Emma discussed with her to go shopping for clothes and accessories for the weekend, and Georgiana readily agreed, and then made a shopping plan without distractions.
Although Mr. Wickham was able to speak well, the audience did not cooperate, and he did not receive much response to what he said. Mr. Wickham secretly hated the arrogance of the two men in front of him, and he was a little hesitant to elope with Emma, but now he felt that George was so arrogant and rude to him, and that he had done such a thing as a courtesy.
Thinking of this, Mr. Wickham stole a glance at Emma, who had been paying attention to his reaction, immediately met his gaze, and then lowered his head slightly to avoid it. Their movements are small and fast, and no one knows about them except the parties.
Mr. Wickham was immediately encouraged by the look. Clever and beautiful young ladies always hold the shelves, pretending to be indifferent and enjoying the passionate pursuits of gentlemen, as if this would show their difference. But Emma's reaction betrayed her, and she apparently already had some affection for him. Mr. Wickham, who had already seen the light of dawn, gritted his teeth and talked for more than an hour, and before leaving, he said that it was a pleasure to chat with George, and hoped to continue the visit in two days.
After Mr. Wickham was gone, Georgiana felt guilty and took Emma to see the bird, which was said to be able to learn to speak. The parrot flapped its wings and cried, "God forbid, God forbid." β
Emma had seen the parrot before, but she still looked surprised and happy in order to cooperate with Georgiana. "It's like it's learned. β
The parrot suddenly cried out, "Emma." β
Emma's eyes widened. "Is it calling me by name?" Although I had seen a parrot before, I had never been called by a parrot, and the novelty was not bad. Emma smiled and said to Georgiana, "Thank you, I love this gift." β
Georgiana was a little confused, she hadn't told the butler the name of Emma the parrot, maybe the butler knew that Emma was coming to Bloomberg and had prepared a welcome gift for her. "Well, if you like it, it's fine. β
No one noticed that Mr. Darcy's expression was unusually stiff, and he relaxed a little after hearing Georgiana's words. The parrot's cage hung in the study, he did not deliberately teach the parrot, but looking at the writing letters, sometimes Emma's face appeared in his mind, mostly with a gentle smile, and the emerald green eyes flowed with joy, occasionally sad, aggrieved, and determined, he usually quickly woke up from the illusion and continued to work, but sometimes he couldn't help but say the name softly, and sighed: Emma. He didn't expect the parrot to learn, it turned out that the parrot had never called anything other than "God forbid".
Emma teased the parrot in a good mood: "What else would you say?"
"Emma, Emma. Emma's "Parrot keeps repeating Emma's name.
Mr. Darcy is going to stiffen to a stone. The parrot's cry gave him a sense of shame that his mind had been exposed in broad daylight. He thought of Emma's silent concern, of the rejection in the cottage under the Cozwold slope, and Mr. Darcy struggled to get out of the memory, and coughed, "It seems that it will only say these two words." The housekeeper will continue to teach it. β
Emma nodded. These two sentences probably cost the housekeeper a lot of time. Georgiana?"
Georgiana reluctantly glanced at the parrot and secretly decided to ask the butler to teach the parrot her name as well. "Then we'll come back in a few days. β
That night, Emma went to George's room to look for him.
After all, after being together for so long, George knew as soon as he saw Emma's expression that she must have something for him to do. "What do you want me to do?"
Emma smiled back approvingly. "Nothing, just to give you a good excuse to tell Mr. SΓΉ Darcy that you and he won't be able to go out with us that day when Mr. Wickham will visit him next. β
George was a little flustered when he received Emma's approval. "No problem. But what are you going to do?"
Emma said it lightly. "What can I do? There are some poor gentlemen who have been tricked by Mr. Wickham into lending him a lot of money, which is said to be used for business purposes for the purpose of paying off gambling debts. I wanted Georgiana to see for herself the gentlemen confronting Mr. Wickham. "Casinos generally take special measures against gentlemen who owe a lot of money, and Mr. Wickham can still stand here in a glamorous and unscathed manner, not because of course because the casino believes that he can marry a rich wife by virtue of his charm, but because he has defrauded several gentlemen of money under the pretext of doing business to repay part of his gambling debts in installments, and the casino believes that he has the ability to repay them gradually.
George's expression became very soft, he liked Emma's softness, this originally soft and shy sister has a sudden change in personality after a great change, and only then can he find the shadow of his original sister. It's not that he doesn't feel bad about his sister after the change, in fact he prefers his current sister, but he also occasionally wonders if that incident really makes his sister change so much? "Is that enough?"
Emma had some idea of George's mood. She can't play another person forever, and instead of playing the original Miss Kentra until she can't stand it anymore or shows her flaws, it is better to use misfortune as an excuse to find a reason for her personality change, and occasionally show the characteristics of the original Miss Kentera. Emma blinked in confusion, "Isn't it enough?" I hope Georgiana will see Mr. Wickham for what he really is. Mr. Wickham was a little too courteous towards Georgiana, and his rhetoric was very deceptive, but he was definitely not a suitable marriage partner. In fact, of course, Emma wanted to teach Mr. Wickham some additional lessons, but strictly speaking, Mr. Wickham did not touch Emma's bottom line, he did not really attack Georgiana, but the original verbal attitude was a little ambiguous, and Emma's measure was enough.
George was relieved to say that Emma's choice was fine, but he still didn't understand something. "Why don't you let us go with us, what if those people get excited and hurt you?"
Emma has her considerations. Mr. Wickham is a villain, and if you make a feud with him, you will inevitably have to worry about being hacked. There are only two ways to solve this problem: to make him dare not retaliate at all or to prevent him from knowing who the enemy is. Mr. Wickham's target is her at this stage, so George must be his primary suspicion. But George's notoriously doting sister would not leave her alone to face a potentially dangerous situation. But this reason is not suitable for sΓΉ George. Emma naturally said, "There's no reason for you to go to Mr. Wickham." There are attendant servants who protect us from being affected. β
Emma said this, George felt justified. "So you're sure he'll offer to go with you?"
Emma gave George a strange look. "It would have been better if Mr. Wickham had not offered to accompany him to prove that he had no intention of Georgiana. β
George also felt that his question was a bit stupid, and he smiled and stopped talking.
Things went as Emma had expected, and two days later when Mr. Wickham came to the door again, George came in from outside and told Mr. SΓΉ Darcy that there was something wrong with their merchant ships in North America and that they needed to leave for the field at once. Emma looked disappointed, and Mr. Wickham immediately offered to serve the two beautiful young ladies.
Emma was a little hesitant: "It doesn't seem to fit in with us"
Mr. Wickham's expression was very calm: "I grew up in Bloomberg, and Georgiana is like my family, so please don't worry. β
Emma glanced at Georgia, who nodded shyly. Emma glanced at Mr. Wickham quickly, lowered her head and whispered, "Then I'm sorry for you." β
As Emma was unclear, Mr. Wickham, as she had expected, misunderstood, and thought that it was more intimate for a Yorkshire man to accompany a lady on a night's outing, and upon his return he revealed to a well-known long-tongued woman that he was going to accompany the two ladies out shopping.
On the other hand, Emma's arranger also pretended not to inadvertently draw Mr. Wickham's two creditors together, revealing the news that Mr. Wickham owed gambling debts. After the creditors found it hopeless, they wanted to teach Mr. Wickham a lesson, and heard that Mr. Wickham was going out with the two young ladies, so he chose to block the street that day.
