Chapter 19: The Plague of Terror
I never talked about this past, I didn't want her to know what kind of suffering and struggle her parents had endured at the last moment of their lives, and what kind of despair they faced, and they left with unwillingness and regret.
But I have never forgotten what kind of determination Wu'er had back then, wanting to take the child and Cao Yan to Huangquan together, and I have never forgotten the joy and relief in Wu'er's expression when I appeared to take away. I don't believe that a mother can be so ruthless, at least I believe that Wu'er will not be such a cruel person, but I can understand that Wu'er should let her leave safely when she doesn't know anything rather than leaving her to suffer in the world.
I was so involved in thinking about things that I didn't notice when the carriage stopped, and when I came back to my senses, Mo Junxian was already missing from the driver's seat, and I looked around and realized that he was talking to an old woman.
The old woman's face was full of vicissitudes, her eyes were cloudy, and the years had already bent her back. Mo Junxian stood there, even if she tried hard to straighten up, she was barely half as tall as Mo Junxian. The old woman is not like other people, she is just alone, I think, this is the reason why Mo Junxian chose her, lonely people, always easy to talk a lot.
The two of them talked there for a long time, and I didn't pay attention to it, but the words that came from time to time still let me know what was going on. The plague, it turned out to be the plague again!
There was a village fifty miles away, and all of a sudden there was a constant stream of deaths, at first two in three days, and then even shorter, almost every day, and everyone was in a panic. Recently, when I heard that the government had ordered the village to be closed, these people who could still move fled desperately in order to save their lives.
The woman's family was dead, and she had no intention of leaving, and even if she had left the village, she would have starved to death in a foreign land at her age, but the death of the plague was so painful that she had to leave her homeland at such an age.
After that, Mo Junxian said something to the old woman, and I didn't pay attention to it, but I saw that he left two bags of things for the woman. And that burden is clearly the food we packed this morning and the purse with broken silver.
After we got in the car and continued to hurry, Mo Junxian was still very calm on the surface, but the atmosphere between us that had just eased down returned to the previous dullness. The carriage moved forward at a faster pace than ever, and the closer we got to the village of which the old woman had spoken, the more desolate our surroundings became, until at last only our carriage was still speeding on the open road, and there was not a figure of the other people in sight.
I can guess from the human feelings I know that Mo Junxian is not in a good mood now, but I can't personally experience what kind of mood it is, so I can only accompany him quietly, pretending that I can understand him, and I am in the same mood as him.
As soon as I entered the village, I noticed something unusual, and I didn't think it was a little strange. The whole village was terrible quiet, there were a few people lying against the wall at the entrance of the village, each as thin as firewood, with rotten sores on their faces, and some people even had a piece missing from their blue and white faces, as if they had been divided by some wild beasts.
Mo Junxian thought that it was a few dead people, because the people in the village fled and no one collected the corpses, so it would be like this, but I keenly sensed that they still had a little weak heart pulse in mind. I don't want to make a fuss, and since there is nothing we can do about it, I think the only thing we can do for them is to put a fire on their side and end their suffering when they leave.
So, I didn't tell Mo Junxian what I found, because I wasn't sure if he would make the same choice as me, and I thought, maybe not, otherwise, how could we be standing here at this time. This entrance to hell is avoided by everyone!
Whether it is the dead people in the village now, or the people I met before who left, I can feel the deep despair in their eyes. I have seen many human plagues, each of which can cause them to fear boundlessly, but they will always hold on to the last hope before they take their last breath, and whatever it is, it can be their last light. I have never seen anyone feel so hopeless before they die, like a dead ash, lifeless, and have given up hope of life before they die.
"Do you think this place is unusual?" I whispered to Mo Junxian's feelings, maybe my feelings about human things would be biased, and I still asked for his opinion.
"Well, it's a little strange, but I can't say" Mo Junxian nodded, agreeing with my opinion, "Are you okay, let's go separately and see, how many people are still alive in this village"
Sure enough, did he still try to save people? But Mo Junxian, do you know that the two of us are not gods, how can we snatch back so many lives from the hands of death?
"Well, it's okay," I sighed inwardly, swallowing unspoken advice.
After hesitating for a moment, he still took out a ring and handed it to him, "It's okay to separate, it's like last time, you wear this, and if you have something, call me through it"
Mo Junxian took the ring, lowered his head and studied it, and said curiously, "What is this?" Seeing that the material is not gold or jade, use it to call you, how to call it? Do you call your name to the ring?"
"Legend has it that this is a ring made of the bones of a winged bird, which has been blessed, and as long as the man and woman wearing this ring think of each other in their hearts and call each other sincerely, the other party can sense it."
Hearing my words, Mo Junxian smiled for the first time in a long time, "Legend? So, you haven't tried it either?"
I took out the other ring and put it on my hand, remembering the poem I had taught, and smiled, "I haven't tried it, but the person who gave me the ring did." The name of the rings is Lingxi, and I say that it is a beautiful verse."
"There are no colorful phoenix wings, and there is a good understanding in the heart" Mo Junxian nodded in agreement, "It's indeed beautiful! So, this is still a pair of lovers' rings?"
This is the first time I've seen his smile in a few days, and sure enough, thinking of the person I admire, even the depressed mood will get better, right? But what could he misunderstand?
"There's no need for that" Leaving such an inexplicable sentence, Mo Junxian blackened his face again and walked quickly away towards the fork in the road on the other side.
I glanced at his back, I always thought this person was weird recently, changing his face was the same as changing the sky, it was clear that it had just rained and the sky was clear, but in the blink of an eye, it was cloudy.
Moreover, the attitude towards me is especially strange, and it is no longer the gentle and elegant boy we knew when we met.
I was so troubled that I stopped thinking about why he had changed so much and went to the other side.
The village was quiet and desolate, with only the occasional suppressed moan coming from some broken window, and I could feel their pain even if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
I didn't check them one by one like Mo Junxian, my spiritual sense can help me find the survivors in the fastest time, and I, turned around and entered the first room where there was a painful moan, wanting to see what kind of plague it was, so domineering.
After checking a few in a row, not only did I not breathe a sigh of relief because I understood the condition, but my eyebrows became more and more frowned, and the doubts in my heart had reached the point where I couldn't hide them on my face, until I met Mo Junxian on the other side of the village, and when he asked me worriedly What was wrong, I suddenly reacted, it should be that my expression was too terrifying, so that he thought I was in some danger.
"It's nothing, I just think this plague is weird, it doesn't look like ...... "In fact, I would like to say that these people are surrounded by a layer of black mist that is invisible to ordinary people, which is more like some kind of demonic aura, not like a plague. However, how should I explain what I said, judging from the conversations in the past, Mo Junxian does not seem to believe in these supernatural and mysterious things.
