Chapter 42: Extraordinary Courage

When he left the castle after lunch, Phoenix was happy that yesterday's rain had stopped. The sky was clear and light gray, but the grass beneath your feet was soft and wet, and you could step on it one foot deeper and one foot shallow. That's when they went to their first lesson on protecting magical creatures.

Hagrid waited for his students by the door of the cabin. He was dressed in a moleskin coat, and the hound's fangs were at his feet, and he seemed to be in a hurry to go. "Come on, hurry up, hurry up!" He shouted, and by this time the students had approached. "There's something good to treat you today! A great lesson is coming! Are you all here? Okay, follow me!"

They're going to be in this class with Gryffindor.

Hagrid led them along the edge of the woods, and by five minutes they were outside a paddock. There is nothing there.

"Everybody come up to this fence!" He shouted, "That's right, stand where you can see." Now, the first thing you have to do is open the book. ”

"How do you open it?" said Draco Malfoy in his cold, elongated tone.

"Huh?" said Hagrid.

"How do we open the books?" Malfoy said again. He took out his amp; amp; amp; lt; Yokai Book of Monsters amp; amp; amp; gt; , which he had already tied with a rope. Others brought out the books, some tied theirs, and others put the books in sturdy bags or with large clips.

"Peverell knows how to tell everyone, how to open these books?" Hagrid saw Phoenix's book lying quietly in his hand, untied or clamped. He looked very excited.

"Just twitch the spine of these books. Phoenix picked up Melinda's book indifferently and tore off the strap that bound it. The book wanted to bite, but Phoenix's index finger slid from top to bottom on the spine and the book trembled, then opened and lay quietly in his hand. Others quickly did so.

Twelve Hippogriffs strode briskly towards them. They have the body, hind legs, and tail of a horse, but their front legs, wings, and head appear to be those of an eagle, and they have a steel-colored beak and large bright orange eyes. The claws on their front legs are half a foot long, and they look lethal. Each beast had a thick feathered collar around its neck, and a long chain was tied to it, the ends of which were held in Hagrid's large hand, and he followed them as he jogged into the paddock.

"Hippogriffs have winged beasts, and if you can tame them, they are very good flying mounts. I'm in Austria—" Phoenix didn't realize that his words had taken most of the attention away.

"Hippogriff!" Hagrid yelled happily. Dancing a hand at them, "They're pretty, aren't they?"

He rubbed his hands together and smiled at all the students, "If you want to get closer—"

No one seems to want to do that. However, Harry, Ron, and Hermione cautiously walked towards the fence.

"Well, the first thing you must know about Hippogriffs is that they are proud," said Hagrid, "and it's easy to offend them. Never offend a Hippogriff, as this may be the last thing you want to do. ”

Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle weren't listening, they were whispering. After Phoenix finished speaking, he looked down at the book, and didn't listen to him much.

"You always have to wait for the Hippogriff to act first," Hagrid continued, "it's polite, you know? you walk over to it, you bow, and you wait. If it returns the salute to you, you can touch it. If it doesn't bow, get out of it, because these claws hurt. ”

"Okay—who's going to be the first to come?" replied, and most of the students stepped back. Even Phoenix, who was reading the book, took a step back, he was intently reading the chapter of the Sphinx Manticore. The monsters were shaking their heads in anger and spreading their powerful wings, as if they weren't happy to be restrained like this.

"No one?" Hagrid asked, a pleading look.

"I'll come. Harry said.

Someone behind him took a deep breath, and both Lavender and Parvati whispered, "Oh no, Harry, think about your tea!"

Harry ignored them. He climbed over the fence of the paddock.

"Well done, Harry!" Hagrid exclaimed, "Okay - let's see how you get along with that monster named Buckbeak." He undid a chain, dragged Buckbeak away from his companion and pulled its leather collar down. All the students on the other side of the paddock seemed to be holding their breath. Malfoy's eyes narrowed maliciously.

"Relax, alright, Harry," Hagrid said quietly, "you and it must look at each other and find a way not to blink—if you blink hard." Monsters don't trust you."

Buckbeak had turned his big, pointed head around and was looking at Harry with a furious orange eye.

"That's right," Hagrid said, "that's right, Harry—now, bow—"

Harry reluctantly flashed the back of his neck to Buckbeak, who bowed slightly, then straightened up to look.

The monster still looked at him with hostility. It didn't move.

"Ahh Hagrid said, sounding a little worried. "All right—back off, now. Harry, stepping back relaxedly. ”

But then, to Harry's great surprise, the monster suddenly bent down on its scaly front knee and sank down, visibly bowing.

"Well done, Harry!" Hagrid was ecstatic and said, "yes, you can touch it now!

He walked slowly towards the monster, and reached out to it, slapping it on its beak several times. The monster lazily closed its eyes, as if it liked him like that.

All the students applauded, except for Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, who looked disappointed.

"Yes, Harry," said Hagrid, "I think it might be willing to let you ride it." ”

"You climb up from here, just behind the wing joints," said Hagrid, "be careful not to pull off its feathers, it doesn't like you to do that—"

Harry put one foot on Buckbeak's wing and climbed onto its back. Buckbeak stood up.

Harry didn't know where to grab it, and every patch in front of him was covered with feathers.

"Go on!" Hagrid exclaimed, patting the monster on the buttocks.

Buckbeak carried him around the paddock before returning to the ground.

"Well done, Harry!" Hagrid shouted, cheering everyone except Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle. "Okay, who wants to give it a try?"

All the students were encouraged by Harry's experience and cautiously entered the paddock. Hagrid unfastened the chains one by one, and soon there were people bowing nervously all over the paddock. When Phoenix got on it, he sat on his back so that he could read a book half-lying down, and pressed his back against the back of the hippony's neck.

Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle asked for Buckbeak. It bowed to Malfoy, who patted its beak with disgust.

"It's easy," Malfoy said in a long voice, "if Potter can do it, I know it must be very easy—I bet you're not dangerous." Isn't it?"

He said to the monster, "You're not dangerous, are you, you big ugly brute?"

Steel-gray claws waved. Malfoy let out a scream, and Hagrid immediately slipped Buckbeak back into its collar as he struggled to pounce on Malfoy, and Malfoy curled up in the grass. There were patches of blood on the robes.

"I'm going to die!" Malfoy shouted, panicking. "I'm going to die, look! it's killing me!"

"You're not going to die!" Hagrid said, his face extremely pale. "Somebody's going to help me--I have to carry him out of here-"

Hermione ran to open the door, and Hagrid lifted Malfoy with ease. As they walked by, Harry saw a deep, long cut in Malfoy's arm, blood running down the grass and Hagrid leading him up the slope. Run towards the castle.

The students in the Conservation of Magical Creatures class were shocked and followed.

"It takes extraordinary courage to take the initiative to let a beast attack you. Phoenix thought it was funny, causing Gryffindor to look at him angrily.

Everyone climbed the stone steps to the empty antechamber. The Slytherin students said that Hagrid was going to complain to the school, and walked to their common room in the main castle building.
