Chapter 58: The Beginning of the Court
They all looked down at him, some with stern expressions, others with undisguised curiosity.
"Very well," said Phoenix, "since the defendant is there—what about your defender?"
"Uh, I-I-I'm not sure-" Harry stammered, some raising eyebrows.
"If you don't have a defender, this court won't retry it at another date, you know—"
"Defence Counsel: Albus Percival Woolfrick Brian Dumbledore. Harry said in a calm voice behind him.
Dumbledore strode over calmly, dressed in a black and blue robe, with an extremely serene expression on his face. He walked parallel to Harry, looked up, and looked not at Phoenix but at Fudge through the half-moon glasses perched on the bridge of his hooked nose, his long silver-white beard and hair glistening in the light of the torches.
The members of the Wizengamot were all whispering to each other. All eyes were on Dumbledore. Some looked annoyed, others seemed a little frightened, and the two elderly witches sitting in the back row waved in welcome.
Fudge looked a little panicked.
"Ah," said Phoenix, "Professor Dumbledore, I think you can get yourself a chair. ”
"Of course, don't bother. Dumbledore said mildly. He drew his wand and shook it slightly, and a soft burnished chintz armchair appeared next to Harry out of thin air. Dumbledore sat down, his long fingertips butt together, and his eyes looked at Phoenix from there, with a polite, interested expression on his face.
"Are you ready?" he asked, looking at Percy.
"Yes, sir. Percy's voice said eagerly. Harry looked at Percy, expecting him to show an expression of recognition of himself, but there was no expression on his face. Percy's eyes, hidden behind his glasses, were staring intently at the parchment in front of him, a quill in his hand ready to write.
"The trial of August 12," Phoenix said solemnly, as Percy busily began to take notes, "in the case of Harry James Potter, who lives at 4 Privet Road in Little Whinging, Surrey, for violating the Reasonable Restraint of Underage Wizards Act and the International Secrecy Act." Defence Counsel: Albus Percival Wulfrick Brian Dumbledore. ”
He looked at the long parchment and read it in a frustrated voice.
"Interrogators: Phoenix Balder Cadmus Peverell, representative of the young wizards of the Wizengamot, assisted interrogators: Cornelius Oswald Fudge, Minister for Magic, Amelia Susan Bones, Director of the Law Enforcement of Magic, and Recorder of the Trial: Percy Ignatius Weasley. ”
As soon as the words fell, the Wizengamot fidgeted one by one.
"Allegation—" He pulled out a piece of parchment from a pile of papers, scanned it quickly, and read it aloud, "The accused was guilty of the following offence: the defendant had previously received a written warning from the Ministry of Magic for a similar charge, and this time, knowing full well that his actions were unlawful, he deliberately and knowingly cast a Divine Guardian Charm in front of a Muggle in a Muggle settlement at 9:23 p.m. on August 2, in violation of the Reasonable Restraint of Minor Wizards Act of 1875 Paragraph 3 and article 13 of the International Federation of Magicians' Secrecy Act. ”
"You're Harry James Potter at 4 Privet Road, Little Whinging, Surrey?" asked Phoenix.
"Yes. Harry replied.
"You received an official warning from the Ministry of Magic three years ago for illegal use of magic, didn't you?"
"Yes, but—"
"I haven't defended the defendant yet, so please just say yes or no. Phoenix said sternly.
"Yes, sir. Harry said awkwardly.
"You magically conjured a Patronus on the night of August 2nd?" Phoenix said.
"Yes. Harry said.
"You know you're not even seventeen years old and aren't allowed to use magic outside of school?"
"Yes. ”
"You know you're in a Muggle-dense place?"
"Yes. ”
"You know exactly there was a Muggle nearby?" Phoenix glanced at the material and added, "And you're a cousin?"
"Yes. Harry said dryly.
Bones, who had previously reviewed the information, raised his head and said in a loud and deep voice. "You've conjured a full-fledged Patronus?"
"Yes. Harry said, "Because—"
"A physical Patronus?" she interrupted Harry.
"A-what-" Harry asked.
"Your patronus has a clear and definite form - what Ms. Bones means is more than vapor or smoke - but this has nothing to do with the present case. Phoenix explained Harry's doubts while stopping the continuation of such irrelevant topics.
"Now the defense can defend itself for its actions. Phoenix said businessmanly.
"I did it because of the Dementors!" Harry said impatiently. There was silence in all directions, and it seemed even more solemn than before.
"Dementors—" said Ms. Bones after a moment, her two thick eyebrows raised high, and her monocle seemed to be about to slip down, "what do you mean, child—"
"I mean, two Dementors popped up in the alley and were coming straight at me and my cousin!"
"Ah," Fudge said, sneering as he looked at the Wizengamot members in front of him, as if hoping they would understand the joke as well. "yes, yes, I knew we'd hear like that. ”
"It makes sense, if there are Dementors, it makes sense to use the Patronus Charm. Phoenix said thoughtfully. Fudge next to him was a little anxious and kept glancing at Phoenix.
"However, the Ministry of Magic records do not contain any Dementors sent to Privet Road. "What you say is your family's words, if there is no evidence." I thought-"
Many members smiled maliciously, but most of them were talkative. Fudge smiled again and looked at Dumbledore smugly.
"I'm not lying!" Harry exclaimed, his voice drowning out the voices of the judgment bench again, "There were two, one at each end of the alley, and everything was so dark and cold, my cousin touched them, desperately trying to escape—"
Dumbledore cleared his throat. The Wizengamot fell silent for a moment.
"Actually, we have a witness who can prove that the Dementors did appear in that alley," he said, "and I mean except Dudley Dursley." ”
Phoenix was also a little surprised, the Order of the Phoenix insider said that Fletch, who was in charge of protecting Harry that night, had left Harry for a while for a bunch of unknown cauldrons, and the attack also happened at that time - Dumbledore also arranged someone around Harry, why not just let that person do it, so as not to face interrogation now.
Hearing Dumbledore's words, Fudge's fat face seemed to suddenly relax, as if someone had let go of the air inside, and said in a little panic: "I'm afraid we don't have time to listen to this nonsense anymore, Dumbledore, I want to deal with this quickly-"
"I may not remember exactly," said Dumbledore kindly, "but I believe that under the Wizengamot Charter of Rights, the defendant has the right to have witnesses testify on his behalf, is that right?Mr. Peverell?Ms. Bones?" he asked the monocle-wearing witch.
"Yes," Ms. Bones said, "it is. ”
"Bring the defence witnesses to court. Phoenix said. "Weasley, you go. ”
Percy immediately stood up and ran down the stone steps from the judge's seat, hurriing past Dumbledore and Harry, without looking at them.
Moments later, Percy returned, followed by an emaciated woman. Dumbledore stood up, gave her the chair, and conjured one for himself.
Phoenix hadn't met her - the Insiders had provided a photo of the members of the Order of the Phoenix, and the new additions were people who could get portraits, such as Auror Kingsley Shackel and Aurora Fadora Tonks. Snape didn't mention this person either, of course he was the one who hung around Voldemort's neck, and it was normal that he didn't know something.
"Full name?" Phoenix asked, curious. The lady had just sat down on the edge of her chair tremblingly.
