Act 52: The Cave of the Netherworld
The second layer of the Endless Abyss, the Netherworld's Cave.
The wooden staircase has become a little rickety due to years of weathering, and it seems that it will shatter directly in the next moment, causing those walking on it to fall into the abyss and shatter their bones.
It's just that Lawson's hand on the armrest can be felt, this infinite corridor has been magically processed, and it is not as fragile as it seems, at least there is no need to worry about falling down with one foot in the air.
The three of them led the way with Lawson in the middle, Fina in the middle, and Erandall in a guarded formation behind, passing through the entrances to several small caves, but these caves were not shortcuts, and the three of them wasted no time in exploring them.
After walking for about half an hour, the dark purple swirling sky of the originally quiet sea was no longer visible, only the infinite darkness shrouded the three of them.
Whether you go forward or back, you can only see a small flight of stairs, and instead of silence, there is a creepy chirping of unknown creatures from time to time.
Walking in this oppressive atmosphere is a test of everyone's psychological endurance.
Fina tried to keep her composure, but her slightly trembling hands betrayed her, and she pulled the corner of Lawson's cloak in front of her, not daring to gasp, and her heart was in her throat.
Irandall felt his senses suppressed to the extreme in this darkness, which was devouring him little by little like a greedy and cunning beast.
As for Rosen, he was keenly aware of the changes in the laws around him, and the order that was relatively stable in the Sea of Tranquility had already shown some signs of collapse here, which was a sign of being affected by the power of chaos, and further down, it was likely to become a real wasteland like the Eternal Night Forest and the Great Desert of the Shallow Sea.
"Take it. ”
Thinking of this, Rosen took out a dim crystal and stuffed it into Fina's hand, this crystal was unremarkable, although it was made into a pendant, but there was nothing special about it.
"This is a mixture of mobile terminal and shimmer crystal, which has my laws added, at least it can resist the disorderly order in the wasteland, your strength is too weak, if you enter the wasteland directly, you won't live long. ”
Fina took the crystal, she knew the effect of the shimmer crystal, which was a necessary prop for explorers who wanted to go deep into the second floor, and she actually prepared several of them herself, but since Lawson gave it to her, then Fina had no reason to refuse.
Putting on the pendant, Fina only felt her chest loosen, and the illusion of being out of breath disappeared immediately, and everything around her seemed to be less gloomy and hopeless, and her spirit was also lifted.
"Thank you......"
Fina spoke weakly, and in her impression, Lawson was still the murderer who didn't blink, so Fina still didn't dare to talk to Lawson.
Before the words could be finished, only the sound of heavy breathing was heard, which sounded in Fina's ears.
"Be careful. ”
Rosen was the first to react, taking a step forward and pushing Fina back.
The next moment, a huge object passed between the two of them, silently, but clearly there.
It seemed to be long, and the walk lasted a while before it ended.
"What is this?"
Rosen saw that the other party was not hostile, so he did not attack, but he was still a little curious.
In his perception, it was a snake-like creature, but the difference was that it had several pairs of thin wings that glided freely through the air without the slightest hindrance.
Lawson directly threw out a shining crystal, and the faint light lit up in the darkness, although it was not enough to illuminate the entire abyss, but it also allowed the three of them to see clearly what kind of monster it was just now.
It was a long, sleek snake, with no eyes and a nose, only a mouth, and inside were countless wriggling tentacles, which were sticking to the unknown flying insects in the air one by one, and the monster had several pairs of wings as light as cicada wings, which were dozens of yards wide when opened.
At this moment, from the feet of the three of them, a gust of wind swept in, causing the stairs of the Infinity Corridor to shake, and Fina only grabbed Irandall, trying to get a sense of security.
However, it was clear that this gust of wind was not as strong as the previous Abyssal Breath, so Lawson did not take any countermeasures, and only stood on the stairs, looking at the corner illuminated by the shining crystal in the distance.
I saw that the monster's wings were raised, and its whole body flew downward, and around it, countless insects flew up one after another because it was difficult to resist this strong wind, and it was difficult to escape in the frenzied air current, and a wave of insects was formed.
Among them, many insects themselves have light-emitting organs, which give this wave a little starlight, quite dreamy.
Swimming in this starlight color, the monster continued to devour the insects, and it could be seen that from the surrounding caves, several more of the same monster appeared, as if in a feast, and the huge monster floated in the air waves, devouring the small insects.
The wind soon became lighter, and almost at the same time, the monsters had finished their feeding and burrowed into their burrows, leaving only a few small insects that had survived, and were flying towards the rock wall as if they were in the starlight.
"I see, it's the Serpent. ”
At this time, Fina's restless heartbeat gradually slowed down.
"The snake is a creature that inhabits the cave of the netherworld, there is no sense of sight, hearing and smell, it all relies on a special way to sense the body temperature of the surrounding creatures, although they are huge, but the food is all kinds of small insects, originally I thought that these snakes are moving through the cave, but I didn't expect them to use the small breath of the abyss to hunt. ”
It seems that winds from below are not uncommon in the Nether Caverns, and this kind of wind that cannot reach the upper level is also known as a small Abyssal Breath, which is a minor threat to explorers who descend from the Infinite Corridor, and is therefore documented in various documents.
It's just that Fina didn't expect that there would be this kind of ecology in the Netherworld's Cave, and this trip really brought a lot of knowledge from the books to life.
"What do these bugs eat for a living?"
Lawson asked, reaching out and grabbing a few of them with a mage's hand, placing them in front of him to observe.
If you look closely, these are not so much bugs as aggregates of some arthropods, most of them transparent, or with light-emitting organs, or with long legs or wings, and even a few like jellyfish on Earth, with light bodies that can swim in the stagnant air.
"Darkness. ”
Fina paused before answering.
"Their food is the darkness of the Netherworld. ”
