Chapter 159: Keep Shooting
After Wang Jie completed the acquisition procedures of "Ming Pao", he hurried back to Los Angeles with Li Zi, in addition to the crew of "Forrest Gump" who needed him to organize the filming, there was also the Spring Festival in China.
Wang Jie didn't go anywhere during the Spring Festival this year, and he had more than ten children to take care of, and he was still refining some foundation building pills for his children.
On February 1, Wang Jie reappeared in the crew of "Forrest Gump", which made assistant director Sean Hepburnfeller very happy, he finally didn't have to worry about directing the filming anymore, and at the same time he finally knew how difficult it was to direct an A-level work.
"Well done, Gary, now there's good news and bad news, which are you going to hear first?" Wang Jie, who was behind the monitor, raised his head and said loudly as he looked at Gary Sinis, who played Lieutenant Dan on the set.
"Hmm...... "Nice" Sinis glanced around and shrugged, "How's the good news." ”
"The good news is that your image is outstanding, and I'm very happy. Wang Jie said with a smile.
"And what about the bad news?" asked Hanks, who was standing next to Sinis.
"The bad news is that ILM's technical consultant told me that there's a small piece of blue material wrapped around your leg, so we're going to have to do it all over again. Adrian stretched out his hand and raised it, and suddenly, a wail rang out.
What is being filmed is the wedding of Forrest Gump and Jenny at the end of "Forrest Gump", Lieutenant Dan comes with his fiancée, and this scene is the first and only meeting between the two most important people in Forrest Gump's life, Jenny and Lieutenant Dan.
Regarding this scene, Wang Jie once remembered a comment that said: The representative of two polar and even extreme views in the United States shook hands and made peace because of Forrest Gump.
Jenny undoubtedly represents the young people of the sixties and seventies in the United States, who were once known as the Beat Generation, drug addicted, promiscuous, radical, eager for freedom, desperate to stand out, and wanted to be noticed, while Lieutenant Dan represents those who are conservative, traditional, and do not want to change, such as those who believe that they should die there when they go to war, rather than survive as disabled.
In the end, they all lost their goals in life and lost their confidence in life, on the other hand, Forrest Gump, who has the simplest outlook on life, no matter what he encountered, remembered his mother's words, and always insisted on running forward, but he achieved success that no one else could have.
Therefore, "Forrest Gump" is a completely American main theme movie, although the character Forrest Gump is fictional, it is regarded by many people as a representative of the American dream: as long as you work hard, you can achieve success!
Many people know that the American Dream is largely just a picture. Yes, of course, there are people like Steve Jobs who have made a fortune from scratch — which is why Forrest Gump invested in a computer company that sold Apple, but more often than not, someone like Bill Gates who was both capable and connected. A self-made person who succeeds entirely on his own may not have one in 100,000 unless the bar is lowered.
But it's better to give hope than nothing, which is why Wang Jie doesn't have much aversion to the Oscars, even if the film school is somewhat conservative and not so fair. As long as you look at the best movies of each edition, you will find that the vast majority of movies, no matter how dark and negative the overall story is, always have a dazzling bright color to give people encouragement and hope. For example, in "American Beauty" a few years later, many people said that the film stripped the glossy skin of the American middle class, but the sentence "I am proud of my small life" after Linus's death sublimated the whole theme.
So a completely noir film like "The Seven Deadly Sins" may be excellent, but it will never win the Oscar for Best Picture. A large media group in a country must promote mainstream values, whether it is the United States or the country where Wang Jie lived in his previous life.
There are many reasons why Hollywood's main theme movies can sell well all over the world, Americans are more familiar with this system, and they know how to integrate their own values and views into the story to imperceptibly influence people, such as "Forrest Gump" that Wang Jie is filming.
In addition, the strength of culture and some things in the system are also one of the reasons, but some idiots among Chinese filmmakers are also the reasons, as Wang Jie, who knew about that circle in his previous life, and relied on his innate advantages in Hollywood in this life, is fully qualified to paste the word idiot on the heads of some people.
Okay, let's not talk about that, let's go back to the set. Gary Sinis's Lieutenant Dan lost his legs in Vietnam, so his legs could not be exposed during filming. Normally, it's easy to use a wheelchair and hide your legs underneath, but in this scene of Forrest Gump's wedding, he came with a cane and rolled up his trousers to show Forrest Gump his titanium prosthetics. As a result, his calf had to be wrapped in a special blue fabric, and then the whole thing was removed and replaced with a prosthetic leg in post-production, so the blue fabric had to be just right, and even the slightest problem would not work.
Fortunately, after filming again, I passed the test smoothly, and the scene in Alabama was almost filmed, and the rest were some fragmented shots and places that needed to be reshot.
When Wang Jie returned to Xiangjiang before, he handed over some not-so-important shots to assistant director Sean Hepburnfeller, and he basically did a good job, except for a few shots. For example, Jenny returned to Forrest Gump for the first time, and the two came to the vicinity of Jenny's original home while walking in the wilderness, and Jenny, who remembered all kinds of past events, angrily picked up a stone and threw it at the house, and finally fell to the ground and cried quietly. Wang Jie's original intention for this shot was to shoot from the bottom up, showing a feeling of heaven and earth, in order to reflect the emptiness and loss in Jenny's heart at the moment.
Although Sean did this, the shot was not as good as Wang Jie intended, so after thinking about it, he decided to reshoot. Fortunately, Forrest Gump has not yet filmed the footage of Jeanne having the cottage topple it, so it can be used.
"You've been doing well, Demi, so just reflect on how you felt. Wang Jie was talking to the heroine Demi Moore about the requirements at this time, and Tom Hanks was standing next to him.
"Yes, Mr. William, I understand. Demi Moore nodded, then stepped aside and began to brew emotions.
Wang Jie turned to Hanks, he didn't have any extra words for Hanks, just patted the other party's shoulder, and Hanks, who was wearing a blue and white plaid shirt and white trousers, was dressed as a standard Forrest Gump, and also smiled and didn't speak.
I have to admit that in terms of the identity of an actor, Tom Hanks is indeed very good, and he has just the right feeling for Forrest Gump, and there are very few NG times since the start of filming, so Wang Jie doesn't have to worry about it at all.
As the baffle was knocked down, the scene was silent for a moment, and Demi Moore, who played Jenny, suddenly picked up the stone from the ground and threw it at the cabin like a vent, one, two...... Finally, her feet slipped, she fell to the ground, and then hung her head and cried lowly, and Forrest Gump, played by Hanks, stepped forward and silently supported her.
Jenny is also a woman with dreams, but unfortunately she was hurt by her father from the beginning, and Forrest Gump's lines have been made clear: his father is very loving and always caresses her lovingly. What does this mean, domestic violence or something deeper, that's the audience's own understanding. In short, Jenny, who has been hurt since childhood, has developed a rebellious character, and she is desperate to prove herself and find her own way.
But the more she did this, the more she was hurt, and finally she stood on the balcony and watched the city lights from a bird's eye view. Fortunately, in Alabama, there is another man who has always loved her deeply, from beginning to end, without hesitation, so Jenny finally came down from the balcony. But she was still confused, even if she returned to Alabama and returned to Forrest Gump, until ......
"I'm not smart, but I know what love is. Forrest Gump said with some indignation and sadness.
At this moment, Jenny finally understood Forrest Gump's feelings for her, so there was a later story.
The shot was shot in one go, and both Demi Moore and Hanks performed perfectly. After these fragmented footage were processed, the scenes in the small town of Howill were almost over, and then the crew moved to Montgomery, Alabama's second-largest city, to shoot some of the urban scenes. There's Forrest Gump's college exterior, Jenny's girls' school exterior, and most importantly, Forrest Gump sits on a bench and tells his story to every passerby waiting for the bus.
The original was shot in different places, including North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. But Wang Jie believes that since these stories take place in Alabama, they should be filmed in Alabama. Anyway, as long as you are willing to find it, there is not only one suitable place for shooting, and the set for shooting is easy to arrange.
"Well done, ma'am, thank you for your help. At a T-shaped street in Montgomery, Wang Jie said to a young black woman who was an extra and played Forrest Gump's first person to speak to while waiting for the bus.
For these roles, Wang Jie did not look for too professional actors, he believes that it is more appropriate to let the locals play them, so that they can better integrate with the local atmosphere.
Although Montgomery is the second largest city in Alabama and has played many important roles in American history, such as the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and so on, the conflict caused by the first black people allowed to enter the university, and finally the National Guard intervention in Alabama, which is also mentioned in the movie Forrest Gump, but in terms of urban characteristics, Montgomery is not much different from ordinary large American cities.
After filming in Montgomery for about five or six days, the few scenes here were completed, but the crew left Montgomery on February 8, and when they returned to Los Angeles, it was already February 12. The reason why this is so is because the crew drove back to Los Angeles instead of taking a plane, because there were also shots of Forrest Gump running halfway, and the scenery of all over the United States, such as canyons, forests, deserts, etc., had to be taken in real life.
In fact, the four-day itinerary is indeed very comfortable, driving down the interstate highway all the way, it is considered an overview of the scenery of the United States, especially when driving in the wilderness, the feeling of the sky and the earth is very contagious, and it is no wonder that many people like to drive through North America.
Hanks also said that it was the best experience he had ever had in the film - there were several times when he ran so hard and so forgetful that he completely lost track of time and kept running forward, thankfully with his brother Jim.
After returning to Los Angeles, Wang Jie continued to devote himself to his work, although with his ability, as long as everything goes well, it does not take as much time to complete the shooting as the original, but it does not mean that it can be wasted. Long before Montgomery's filming was over, he had informed ILM that he had set up a studio in Burbank, and most of the shots in Los Angeles were shot indoors, such as in bars, hotels, barracks, the White House, and ...... Well...... Table tennis competition venue for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.
Regarding these shots, Wang Jie originally wanted to go to Huaxia for on-site shooting, and also planned to revise the script, plus a scene where Forrest Gump went to the alleys of Yanjing City, but after thinking about it for a long time, he gave up. Relations between the United States and China have gradually cooled with the decline of Russia, and it seems that it will not be long before the United States will set its sights on the Asia-Pacific region again, as it did in the original time and space.
