One of the important differences between Taoism and Buddhism is that Taoism worships all kinds of immortals, pursues immortality, and believes that as long as people cultivate well, they can immediately become immortals; Buddhism worships all kinds of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and pursues the practice of this life, and reincarnates to enjoy happiness in the next life. In Taoist architecture, there are mainly the following:
Mountain Gate: The Mountain Gate is the main gate to enter the Taoist temple. Usually the two sides of the door are painted with the two gods of the green dragon and the white tiger, and some also offer the four values of Gong Cao, (the duty officer of the year, month, day, and hour). Different from Buddhism, Taoism worships the gods, so there is a stage on the north side of the mountain gate, and some dramas to pay tribute to the gods are often staged.
The two gods of the green dragon and the white tiger are the guardian gods of Taoism, which are a bit similar to the two generals of Vajra, "Hmph" and "Ha" in Buddhism.
Lingguan Palace: The Lingguan Hall is dedicated to the Taoist protector god Wang Lingguan. It is similar to the Maitreya Hall and the Heavenly King Hall in Buddhism. The Lingguan Hall is a passage-style building, and the front is dedicated to a statue of Wang Lingguan with red hair, a red face, three eyes, a golden whip in his hand, and a hot wheel. There are also four protector marshals on both sides: Ma Lingyao, Zhao Gongming, Wen Qiong, and Yue Fei. Some of these four are indeed people in history, and some are just legendary figures, similar to the "Four Heavenly Kings" in Buddhism. The three-eyed one is Marshal Ma, the one who rides the black tiger is Marshal Zhao, the blue-faced and red-haired one is Marshal Wen, and the red-faced one is Marshal Yue.
Bell and Drum Tower: Taoism believes in the "five elements" theory, the bell belongs to gold, so it is placed in the west, and the drum belongs to the wood, so it is placed in the east. Therefore, the position of the bell and drum tower in Taoism is exactly the opposite of the position of the bell and drum tower in Buddhism.
Jade Emperor Palace: As the name suggests, the Jade Emperor Hall is a place dedicated to the Jade Emperor. It is generally believed that the Jade Emperor is the supreme deity and the "number one", but in Taoism, the Jade Emperor is not the highest deity, and its status is lower than the "Three Qings" enshrined in the Sanqing Palace. It's a bit like the "general manager" in today's society, and there is also a "chairman" on it.
Some Jade Emperor Palaces are dedicated to the "Four Palaces", so they are also called the Four Palaces. There are usually four statues of gods in the hall, namely the Jade Emperor, the Zhongtian Ziwei Arctic Emperor, the Gouchen Antarctic Emperor, and the Houtu Huangdi (female statue).
The "Four Emperors" refer to the four emperors who assisted in the work of the "Three Qings", and they are the gods who rule the spirits of all things, and their status is second only to the "Three Qings". Among the four emperors, the Jade Emperor is the largest, and he is in charge of the power of the Heavenly Dao, which is equivalent to the general manager, and the other three are the "deputy positions" of the Jade Emperor. The Arctic Emperor of Ziwei assisted the Jade Emperor in controlling the latitude and longitude of heaven and earth, the sun, the moon and the stars, and the climate of the four seasons; the Antarctic Emperor Gou Chen assisted the Jade Emperor in taking charge of the Antarctic and the three talents of heaven, earth, and man, ruling the stars and presiding over the affairs of the military revolution among the people; and the Later Earth and Yellow Earth were only in charge of yin and yang fertility, the beauty of all things, and the beauty of mountains and rivers. Because this "leading group" had more contact with the masses of the people, people only knew that there was the Jade Emperor, but they did not know that there were also three Qings.
Sanqing Hall: It is the main hall of Taoism, similar to the Daxiong Hall in Buddhism. The temple ** enshrines Yuqing Yuan Shi Tianzun, Shangqing Lingbao Tianzun (left), Taiqing Daode Tianzun (right). Yuan Shi Tianzun holds jewelry in the center, Lingbao Tianzun holds a yin-yang mirror on the left, and Daode Tianzun holds a fan on the right. Unlike Buddhism, Daode Tianzun Laozi is the founder of Taoism, but can only be ranked third-in-command in Taoism. This is mainly because the Taoists of the earth have fabricated the results of several Heavenly Venerables in order to show that their immortal veins are long.
Lao Lu Tang: Lao Lu Tang (Chunyang Palace): In the Quanzhen Taoist Temple, Lao Lu Tang is dedicated to the seven sons of Quanzhen, that is, the place where the seven disciples of the Quanzhen faction Wang Chongyang are enshrined. There are also Taoist temples ** dedicated to the pure yang patriarch Lu Dongbin, so it is also called the pure yang hall. The old hall is somewhat similar to the main offering hall of the main temple in Buddhism.
Yuanjin Hall: It is a place to worship the Honmei Yuanchen, that is, a place to worship the sixty gods of Jiazi.
Zangjing Pavilion: A place to store the Taoist work "Daozang". The content of "Daozang" is very complex, such as "Laozi", "Zhuangzi", "Huainanzi", "Sun Tzu's Art of War", "Yellow Emperor's Neijing" and so on are the contents of "Daozang", not only Taoist scriptures, treatises, precepts, talismans, etc., but also medicine, chemistry, biology and other contents. The method of "three caves, four auxiliaries and twelve categories" is usually used to divide the "Daozang" classics. "Three Caves": refers to the Cave True Division, the Cave Xuan Division, and the Cave God Division, which are the main scriptures of Taoism; the "Four Auxiliary Books": refers to the Taixuan Division, the Taiping Division, the Taiqing Division, and the Zheng Division, which are the four auxiliary classics; and the "Twelve Categories" refer to the Text, the Divine Runes, the Jade Formula, the Spiritual Diagram, the Spectrum Spirit, the Precepts, the Xianyi Category, the Method Category, the Folk Arts, the Biography Category, the Praise Category, and the Chapter Table Category.
In addition, there are some side hall buildings, such as the God of Wealth Palace, the Medicine King Palace, the Sanguan Palace, etc.
Taoism believes that all living beings in the world are ruled by the three officials of heaven, earth and water, and they are the gods of good and woe in the world, so the Sanguan Hall is dedicated to the heavenly officials, earth officials and water officials. There are also Taoist temples that worship three stars: Fu, Lu and Shou.
In addition to the gods enshrined in the main halls mentioned above, Taoism also created many gods according to the preferences of the Chinese, such as: Zhenwu Emperor, Dou Mu, Land, Wenchangxing, Kuixing, Dragon King, and so on.
