107: Pitch
Fu Yuanshan huddled in his office, ready to give a project presentation with his company's chief venture partner and chief technology consultant. At this time, a text message from Shulei came from his phone:
?
Shulei: Mom called, and she threw a tantrum at the article in the magazine.
Toyama: Huh? I think this article is good, it's very exciting.
Shulei: My dad asked you to meet him at 10:30 a.m. at the Seaside Golf Club.
Toyama: I'm sorry, but I had a meeting at that time.
Shulei: You're going to have to face him sooner or later.
Toyama: I know, but I'm busy right now. Those of us who have to work for a living.
Shulei: I'm just sending a message.
Toyama: Tell him that I had a very important meeting with the Shanghai Monetary Authority this morning. My assistant will call his secretary to arrange another time to meet.
Shulei: Okay, I wish you a smooth meeting.
?
A few minutes later, Fu Yuanshan's administrative assistant in their department said to Yuanshan on the intercom: "Fu Yuanshan, I just received a call from your father-in-law's secretary, Miss Wang. He wants you to meet him at the seaside golf club in half an hour. β
?
Fu Yuanshan rolled his eyes in frustration. "I already know this, and I've dealt with it. Now, please don't bother me with my presentation, there's only one hour left until our bidding. β
He turned to the other partners in their firm: "Sorry, everyone, where did we just go?" Second only to Bloomberg's terminal system, right? β
The walkie-talkie rang again. "Fu Yuanshan - I know you said not to bother you, but ......"
"Then why the hell are you bothering?" Fu Yuanshan raised his voice angrily.
"I just got another call...... Because of you, our meeting with government officials was postponed. β
"A meeting of the Monetary Authority?" Fu Yuanshan tried to make sure he had heard correctly.
"Yes."
"When is it postponed?"
"It was just postponed, and it didn't tell us when."
"I'll rub!"
"And your father-in-law's office called again with another message. Miss Wang wants me to read it aloud to you...... Wait, ah! I got the message. Okay, here: meet Mr. Qu at 10:30 a.m. at the Seaside Golf Club, no more excuses. β
"Fuck!" Fu Yuanshan muttered quietly and knocked on the table.
Anyone standing on the third hole of a beachfront golf course will wonderfully call this place "The Old Course" because it will feel like they have been transported back in time. In 1930, in the middle of a natural primeval jungle, rolling green hills were covered with groves, and on the other side was an oasis-like water driving range. There is not the slightest sign of skyscrapers here, which is refreshing. Qu Yaohua wore a short-sleeved white cotton shirt, khaki pants and a faded RAF blue cap to protect his thinning silver hair, which is his everyday golf attire. But just as his partner was adjusting the fairway, his future son-in-law rushed to the fairway.
"Oh, here he comes, and looks darker than the devil. Let's have a joke with him, shall we? Mr. Qu said to his friend, "The weather is so nice, isn't it?" He shouted.
"Probably, if you don't have ......," Fu Yuanshan said angrily, and then saw the man standing next to his father-in-law. It was Commerce Minister Chan Ka Hung, who was wearing a brightly coloured striped Sligo golf shirt.
"Good morning, Mr. Fu," said the Secretary of Commerce merrily.
Fu Yuanshan smiled reluctantly and said, "Good morning, sir." "What the fuck! No wonder he was able to sabotage my meeting so quickly, it turned out that he was playing golf with the top boss of the MA (the boss's boss)!
"Thank you for meeting me so soon," Mr. Qu politely continued, "Now, I'm going to point it out bluntly: this question is about the gossip story in that stupid magazine. β
"I'm sorry, Mr. Qu. I never intended for them to mention your name," Fu Yuanshan began.
"Oh, I don't care about my name. Besides, I'm not a big man or a politician, am I? I'm just a normal businessman β they can write out any nonsense they have about me. In my opinion, it was completely out of nowhere, but, you see, other people were mentioned in that article by name β other people who were sensitive to these kinds of things β like my wife and my mother-in-law. On that side of their family, you know we can never annoy Shulei's maternal grandmother, or her Uncle Song Chai in Thailand. β
"Hahaha β no one should annoy Zheng Songchai," the commerce minister said with a laugh.
Fu Yuanshan really wanted to roll his eyes at this moment. What makes Zheng Songchai so seedless to everyone around him? "I really didn't know the reporter was going to dig up, it's just a sycophant story β what's the big deal?"
Mr. Qu interrupted him: "Even magazines like "Gossip Funny" know that they can't write about us, so you went to find another magazine "Flashy", or whatever it's called!" Tell me, what do you hope to achieve? β
"I think this article will allow me to enhance the image of our company while respecting the privacy needs of Shutao and your family."
"Do you think there is? I'm guessing you've already read this article. β
Fu Yuanshan swallowed hard: "This is not what I hoped. β
"Calling you a pretentious clown, huh?" Mr. Qu said as he reached out and held the putt, "Jiahong, try this Honma (1) club." β
Fu Yuanshan's jaw was about to tense. If the Secretary of Commerce wasn't there, he'd have whined about this old man!
The Secretary of Commerce unleashed a precise swing and the golf ball rolled smoothly into the hole.
"Good ball, Minister." Fu Yuanshan said.
"Do you know how to play? Mr. Fu. β
"I think I will."
Mr. Qu walked to the tee, and the Secretary of Commerce looked at him and said, "You're a lucky guy β you have a son-in-law who can play golf." My kids are so engrossed in their important lives that it's impossible to play with me. β
"If you have time, we should play at the Sun Resort Club, where the view is spectacular and our colleagues in the company love to go there." Fu Yuanshan said.
Mr. Qu stopped while swinging: "You know, I've never stepped into that club, and I'm not going to set foot in that club even if I don't want to die." If I'm not at Tomson Golf or St Andrews (2), the only place I can play is the old course. β
"I feel the same way, Brother Qu," said the Secretary of Commerce, "didn't you use to catch the Concorde (3) to London after work on Fridays, and then go to Edinburgh and have a game at St Andrews?" β
"It was the only weekend I had. Now I'm a little tired, I can only stay in Tomson for a whole week. β
Fu Yuanshan was silently furious, wondering when these conversations would end. His father-in-law looked him in the eye with relief and said, "I need you to do something for me, I need you to personally go and apologize to your mother-in-law." β
"Of course. If you wished, I would even write a letter to the magazine denying the article. β
"That's not necessaryβI've bought all the printed editions, taken every issue of the magazines out of the bookstore, and now they've been pulped," Qu said softly.
Fu Yuanshan's eyes widened.
"Hahaha, all these subscribers will wonder why the hell is where the 'Flashy' in the mailbox this month went." The Secretary of Commerce scoffed.
"Yuanshan, then I won't leave you, I know you're a busy man. You'll have to check on my wife before she goes to the Salon to get her hair done, she's leaving the house at 11:30. β
"Of course," Mr. Fu said, glad he was able to get out relatively unscathed, "and I apologize again." At the end of the day, I just want to serve this family to the best of my ability, and a feature article about my success will make ......"
Mr. Qu suddenly became furious: "Your success has nothing to do with me!" What exactly have you succeeded? You're doing a meaningless position in a Fortune 500 company and making some negligible money. And everything you get now is what I give you! For me, your only mission in life is to protect my daughter, and that means protecting her privacy and anything. Your second mission is to protect my future grandchildren or granddaughters, but at the moment you have not been successful in either of them. β
Fu Yuanshan stared at his father-in-law embarrassedly and angrily, and he was about to say something when suddenly six or seven security guards in black appeared out of nowhere and picked up their golf bags.
Qu Yaohua turned to his friend and said, "So now, let's go play the fourth hole?" β
Fu Yuanshan stepped up in his Suzuki car, and he was furious at this time, thinking: That bastard dares to insult me in front of the Minister of Commerce! When he brags that he goes to the Tomson Club for the weekend to play golf, he says I'm a pretentious clown! What bullshit is saying that everything I get is what he gave me! Who does he think he is? Does he think he's better than me? He deserves to inherit Shulei's mother's property, but he said these cool things in front of me! Didn't he know that when he inherited so much property, I was working so hard all my life!
Suddenly, there seemed to be a flash of inspiration in his head. He was going to his mother-in-law's house, but now he slammed on the brakes, turned around, and ran back to his office.
Fu Yuanshan's team assistant was browsing the web on her computer, looking for cheap travel goods from the Maldives, when he rushed into the office and began to check the filing cabinets.
"Where are all the documents related to the sale of the first cloud system solution?"
Actually, "Aren't those old documents in the archives on the forty-third floor?" His group assistant said.
"Follow me, we need to find those documents now!"
They ran to the archives, where Mr. Fu had never been before, and began to search through the file drawers: "I need to find the original contract for 2003," he said eagerly.
"Wow, so many documents! Search, search, search until you vomit blood! The group assistant complained.
After searching for twenty minutes, they found a large set of orange binders with all the relevant documents inside. "Here!" Fu Yuanshan said excitedly.
"Wow, you're really out of shit luck! I thought we would never find it again! β
"Alright, thank you, you can go upstairs now." Fu Yuanshan began to look through the documents until he found the document he was looking for. This is a share purchase agreement that his company sold to California-based SkyFuel Technology Corporation and authorized him to work for the company. There, dozens of entities have been involved in the acquisition of his tech company, one of which stands out β and that company is the ultimate parent company of the business he now works for, some of the Mauritius-based bag companies.
With the piece of paper in his hand and staring at the name with suspicion and denial, his heart beating louder than ever: Tomson-Qutang Holdings Ltd.
"Everything you get now is what I give you!" His father-in-law's words suddenly took on a whole new meaning.
