"Potter, you're a full ten minutes late. Snape said in a vicious voice.
"I'm sorry, Professor. Harry Potter said reluctantly.
The corners of Snape's mouth curled up into a sarcastic smile, "Don't be so wrong, Potter, just as you don't want to see me, I don't want to see your nasty face. If it weren't for Dumbledore's orders, I would never have spent a minute on a stupid person like you. β
Snape tapped his desk with his wand, "Starting today, you're going to officially learn Occlumency from me, Professor McGonagall must have told you before coming here." β
"What is Occlumency?"
"I only wish you were a little better than your cousin in Potions class, Potter. Snape's eyes narrowed insidiously, "It's not your average lecture, but I'm still your teacher, and at all times, you have to say 'sir' or 'professor' first, understand, Potter? β
Potter only felt the pain in his arm turn again, and a feeling of grievance welled up in his heart.
"Professor Snape, what is Occlumency? β
"It's really frustrating, I've heard that Defence Against the Dark Arts is still your dominant subject?" Snape looked at Harry Potter with disdain, "Occlumency, any third-year wizard should know, it's the magic used to protect your brain from prying eyes, and it's a pretty important Defence Against the Dark Arts technique." Of course, I've heard that Lupin taught you the Patronus Charm, and maybe he thinks you can only keep so many things in your head that you can't learn more. β
"Why does Professor Dumbledore think I need it, sir?" said Harry, staring directly into Snape's cold dark eyes.
Snape glared at him for a moment, then said contemptuously, "Even you should have figured it out by now." The Dark Lord is so good at telekinesis that a wizard like you can't stop him from searching your brain for memories. β
"What does that mean, sir?"
"It's the magic of extracting feelings and memories from another person's mind. β
"Does he know how to read minds?" asked Harry, feeling a chill in his heart, Voldemort being able to peek into the secrets of his heart!
"You didn't pay attention to the lesson, Potter. Snape said, his dark eyes glinting.
"You don't understand the subtle difference, and that's one of the things that makes you dispense potions so badly. β
Snape paused, apparently savoring the pleasure of insulting Harry. Then he continued: "Only Muggles talk about the stupid idea of 'mind reading'. The human heart is not a book, and it should not be read at will. Thoughts are not engraved in the brain, and people should not be allowed to read them. The human heart is a complex, multi-layered thing. β
Snape looked at Harry Potter with contempt, "At least that's what most people think. β
However, a person who is mindful of the mind can study the minds of others in certain situations and give correct interpretations. For example, the Dark Lord could almost always tell that someone was lying to him. Only a person who is good at Occlumency, can seal the feelings and memories that contradict the lie, lie in front of him without being revealed. β
No matter what Snape said, Mind Taker still sounded like mind reading to Harry. He was still very uneasy.
"Can he know what we're thinking now, sir?"
"The Dark Lord is far from here, and the walls and grounds of Hogwarts are guarded by many ancient spells, keeping the school safe both physically and mentally. "Time and space have an effect on magic. Porter. Eye contact is often crucial for the receptive. β
"Then why do I have to learn Occlumency?"
Snape glanced at Harry, groping his mouth with a thin finger.
"Routine doesn't seem to apply to you, Potter. The spell that didn't kill you seems to have created some kind of connection between you and the Dark Lord. Indications, sometimes. When your mind is at its most relaxed and vulnerable, such as in your sleep, you can sense the thoughts and feelings of the Dark Lord. The Headmaster doesn't think he should be allowed to continue, and he wants me to teach you how to close your mind to the Dark Lord. β
"But why did Professor Dumbledore stop it?" he asked suddenly. "I don't really like it, but it's useful. I mean, I saw the serpent attack Mr. Weasley, otherwise Professor Dumbledore might not have been able to save him, would he?
Snape looked at Harry for a moment, still touching his mouth with his fingers, and then spoke slowly, as if considering every word.
"Potter, I've lowered my demands as much as I can, but I'm still overestimating your IQ. He stood up and paced back and forth in the office, "Obviously, the Dark Lord wasn't aware of this connection between you and him before. Before that, it seemed that you could sense his feelings and thoughts, but he didn't know it. But, that dream of yoursβ"
"Mr. Weasley and the snake?"
"Don't interrupt me, Potter. Snape said fiercely, "I said that dream of yours had invaded the Dark Lord's mind so harshlyβ"
"I'm in the snake's head, not his!"
"I think I just said don't interrupt me, Potter!"
"I perceive the mind of a serpent, not the mind of Voldemort!"
"Don't say the name of the Dark Lord!" Snape shouted. "You idiot!"
There was an awkward silence, and they glared at each other.
Professor Dumbledore said his name as well. Harry whispered.
"Dumbledore is a skilled wizard," Snape said gloomily, "he can say the name, but others are just killing themselves by saying that the Dark Lord's name is just killing themselves, Potter, you are not even a qualified wizard, but you want to have the temper of a powerful wizard?"
"I just want to know," Harry tried to keep his tone polite, "why!"
"Don't you understand, Potter, the Dark Lord is also possessed by the snake, and he is you!"
"How do you know?" asked Harry, "is this just Professor Dumbledore's guess, orβ?"
"I said," Snape sat in his chair, his eyes almost bursting with rage, "call me sir." β
"Yes, sir," said Harry, impatiently, "but how do you know-"
"I know that's enough. Snape snapped, "Your rudimentary brain and unsuspecting mind are vulnerable to the Dark Lord! He could sneak into your dreams at any moment and even manipulate you in turn! Potter, do you think you, like Dumbledore, are you a powerful wizard on par with the Dark Lord?"
Snape said sarcastically, "Last school year, you escaped from Voldemort's hands thanks to Silver, maybe after I learned Occlumency, you still have to go to Silver's Defence Against the Dark Arts cram school to make up for it?"
Harry clenched his fists, suppressing the anger in his heart. (To be continued......)
