Designed primarily in the Dutch architectural style, Gothenburg was a cosmopolitan city from the very beginning, with the first municipal council consisting of five Dutch, three Swedes, two Germans and two Scottish.

The University of Gothenburg was founded in 1891 as a private college, in 1907 it was transformed into a university college, and in 1954 it was officially established through a merger with a medical school.
