Buddhism in the Ming Dynasty is divided into three categories: Zen (Zen Buddhism), preaching (Tiantai, Huayan, Faxiangzong), teaching (also known as law, engaging in funeral rites, rituals), the imperial court clearly stipulates that Zen monks wear brown clothes and green silk jade robes, monks wear jade clothes and green silk light red robes, and monks wear soap clothes and black silk light red robes, and then generally wear black clothes.
There are two types of robes: "Tong Shoulder", which hangs on the left and right shoulders, and "Favoring the Right Shoulder", which is worn on the left shoulder, which is bare. When making offerings to the Buddha and the monks, he favors the right shoulder; If you go out to parade or enter a secular house, drape your shoulders.
The robe is a meritorious and sage, and it has been respected by the Buddhist Order since ancient times. The fifth volume of the Mahayana Bunsheng Mind-Earth Sutra lifts the ten benefits of the robe, that is, there are ten kinds of merits for wearing the robe:
One is covered with it, and he is ashamed of his shame;
Second, it is separated from cold and heat, mosquitoes, and evil beasts;
3. Showing the appearance of the sand gate, those who see it are happy and turn away from evil hearts;
Fourth, the treasure of human heaven can give birth to the blessing of Brahma;
5. When wearing, the pagoda is born and wants to destroy all sins;
The six dyes are bad colors, cut off the five desires, and do not give birth to greed;
The seven robes are the Buddha's pure clothes, forever breaking the troubles and making a good field;
Eight eliminate sins and give birth to ten virtues;
Nine is like a fertile field, which can increase the path of Bodhi;
Ten like armor, the poisonous arrows of troubles cannot be harmed.
According to the volume of "Shakya's Essentials", when Shakyamuni was a bodhisattva of great compassion in the past, he once vowed in front of the treasure Buddha that when he became a Buddha, the robe could achieve five kinds of merits:
Although a disciple of a Buddha commits all kinds of evil views, if he can respect the robe, he will surely attain the fruit of the three vehicles such as shravaka, enlightenment, and bodhisattva, and he will not retreat;
The two heavenly dragons, gods, ghosts, humans, and non-human beings, if they can respect their robes, they can be on the path of liberation in the three vehicles without retreating.
3. If there are spirits, gods, and people, compelled by hunger, thirst, poverty, etc., and get a small piece or even four quarters of a robe, it will be full;
Fourth, if sentient beings are in conflict with each other, and if they think of thieves, if they think of the divine power of the robe, they will have compassion;
Fifth, if you hold a small piece of the robe, respect and respect, once you are in the army, you will often win over others.
According to the Great Nirvana Sutra, "The dragon has to wear a robe, and each wears a small share, that is, it is free from the difficulty of the golden-winged bird." The Ten Chakras of the Jizo Sutra says: "There was a prisoner who was condemned to be bound and abandoned in the wilderness. The robe on the top of the head is promised, and it is difficult to avoid ghosts."
Another Jingyun: "There is a macaque, taking advantage of the monk's absence, playing in a robe; Jumping with joy, stumbling and falling into the valley, and being born in heaven for the rest of his life. After ninety eons, the way of the world is derived". A Han Sutra said: "The dilapidated robe, which is unbearable to use, hangs in the wilderness and mountains; Humans, animals, birds, and beasts, if they see them, they will sow blessings."
Only this time, he tore the robe into long strips.
All draped over the shoulders, just like the clothes that people wore when it rained in ancient times!
