Chapter 34: Advantages and Disadvantages of Novels
After settling down, my parents told me about my manuscript. They said that the information department had returned the manuscript and a letter had arrived, so you can see for yourself.
I picked up the letter, opened it, and saw that it read:
Zhang Jianming's book friends:
Hello, I have read the manuscript you wrote with 'Sister Confidant', and everyone said that it was well written. Together, we found the publishing department for you. The person concerned said that it costs a lot of money to publish a book. Our unit is also a poor unit, and we don't have that much money. Please try to transfer your manuscript to "October" or "Fiction Monthly".
Also, your parents used to come to us to look for you, and I don't know if you've come home. If you are home, please write back to us so that we can rest assured, and finally, good luck!

After reading the letter, I realized the reason why the Ministry of Information had not replied for a long time. It turned out that they really put a lot of thought into my novel. Although they were a deceptive unit, they did not lie to me.
However, if people are worried about whether I will go home or not, I should write a letter back to them. So, I wrote them back and told them that I had returned. I have never been contacted since I received the message. We lost touch with each other.
So, what should I do with this novel that has come back to my hands? Didn't the Ministry of Information ask me to send it to October or Fiction Monthly? Why don't I try it again?
Thinking of this, I went to the Xinhua bookstore in the county town the next day and bought a copy of "October" and "Novel Monthly".
When I opened the two magazines and read them carefully, I was disappointed again. Because the articles published on it are all written by well-known writers, I'm afraid that no one will even read the manuscript after a character like me who doesn't write can send it over.
Moreover, I compared the articles in the two magazines with my own novels, and felt that my novels were far from those of the writers who had already made a name for themselves. Among them, I have summarized a few:
First, the poverty of vocabulary. At that time, the management of the school was still relatively backward, and there was not even a library. As a result, my reading volume is very limited. In addition to a brief taste of the four famous novels, I also read a copy of Ba Jin's "Home" and some romance novels.
In addition, there are Du Pengcheng's "Spring in Winter", "Jinling Spring Dream" and so on. In addition to these, I have been exposed to articles in Chinese textbooks from primary school to junior high school. Even some newspapers and magazines are rarely involved.
Du Fu has two poems that are well written, called: Read more than 10,000 volumes, and write like a god. I haven't read 10,000 books, so I naturally have a hindrance when I write. When I'm writing novels, I often feel like I'm not able to use the right words.
Second, the lack of language control ability. I am an introverted and taciturn person in real life, and I am not good at communicating with people, and sometimes I am so stupid that I can't even say polite words, which causes my lack of language control in the writing process.
In order to hide my shortcomings, I rarely used character dialogue when writing that novel, and the hero and heroine used letters or essays to confide in each other.
Third, the limitations of one's own experience and the lack of understanding of social life. The weakness of my own experience makes my novels only go from home to campus, and then from campus to home, or only on campus, and the most used words are: after class, after class, after school, day of the week, etc.
Let the reader feel bored after reading it. Moreover, I have only written romance novels with a few hazy love experiences that are not yet in love, which makes me have certain difficulties when writing novels, so I can only replace experience with imagination.
In this way, there may be some places where it may not be reasonable. The disadvantage of not knowing enough about social life is also what I feel at a loss when writing novels. When I wrote about the protagonist's car accident, I didn't even know that the train was a train, and I mistook the train for a car.
Fourth, verbose. This is what people I know know about the novel after reading it. Since I couldn't think of a plot anymore, I had to stuff the novel with lengthy arguments and narratives in order to make it a long story. In this way, it is inevitable that people will have a sense of verboseness.
If the novel has so many shortcomings, why is it said to be "well-written"? Of course, its advantages are obvious.
One of the most important things, that is, the place that can affect the reader, is that I pour myself into the novel like the waves of the sea, and the endless passion. Although these lyrical arguments are a little wordy, they have some impact and can penetrate the reader's heart.
Second, delicate psychological description. Because of my introverted personality, I often like to be alone, and of course mental activity occurs when I am alone. This feature makes me very comfortable when writing about the inner activities of the protagonist. When you write it, you can resonate with people.
Third, strong narrative skills. This ability is innate. I'm not good at writing character dialogue, but if I had to tell a story, that's what I'm good at. This characteristic is also the reason why I chose the path of literature.
Fourth, I think I'm writing more atmospheric. This one is also closely related to my personality. I'm unkempt and informal in real life, and I'm often called "sloppy" by people, but I know it. Although it can't be compared to "Lu Duan is not confused about big things", I am very bold in doing things.
This kind of courage is applied to writing. If the reader doesn't believe it, look at the novel and know.
With these advantages, I was able to cover up the other defects and give people some positive comments about my novels, which is also the reason why the information department was willing to help me find a publisher.
